A Study on Prediction of Prognosis of Diseases on the

Basis of Mutra Pariksha

Kalpana B. Kachare*, A. C. Kar

Department of Vikriti Vigyan, Faculty of Ayurveda, IMS, BHU, Varanasi, India

Abstract Ayurveda, which is not only a system of medicine but a way of life, advocates prevention

of disease as its primary aim and following holistic approach in dealing with different diseases. Prognosis is an important aspect of diagnosis and treatment. From ancient

times, predicting prognosis has always been a big challenge to the medical profession.

Patients want to have access to accurate prognostic information, knowing prognosis plays an important role in end-of-life decisions and it helps to determine whether it

makes more sense to attempt certain treatments or to withhold them. If we look into Ayurvedic texts, then we will find that art of prognosis was well developed in ancient

times. In 16th century, Taila Bindu Pariksha, a urine test for knowing prognosis was

popular. In this test, urine is taken in a glass vessel over which an oil drop is placed and characteristic of oil spread (rate, shape and direction of spread) is noted down. These

parameters are indicative of prognosis of diseases. They were popular prognostic tools in

the past but nowadays they are not specifically used, so there is need to re-establish their results so that they can be used in future. In the present article, Mutra Pariksha has been

reviewed in various aspects of the disease, and as a technique of predicting prognosis of diseases.

A Novel Approach in the Management of Amlapitta

(Gastritis) through Odana Kalpana – A Clinical Study

Shweta Dewan*, Susantha P Molligoda National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

Abstract Amlapitta is a very common disease in the present era. It is a very troublesome disease and can give rise to many serious problems if not treated in time. Signs and symptoms of

Amlapitta are very similar to gastritis or hyper acidity. According to conventional

medical science, the most common causes of gastritis are Helicobacter pylori infections and prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). The incidence of

gastritis in India is approximately 3 in 869, i.e., about 12,25,614 people suffering from gastritis out of the total 1,06,50,70,607 population. The objective of the study was to

evaluate the efficacy of Odana Kalpana in Amlapitta and to find out a cost-effective

remedy for Amlapitta. The study was conducted in 30 clinically diagnosed patients of Amlapitta, with an objective of clinical evaluation of efficacy of Odana Kalpana (Orzya

Sativa) and Virecana Yoga (Operculina turpethum). These patients were randomly

allocated into two groups of 15 patients each. Patients of group A were recommended Odana Kalpana 50 g as the Mantha preparation with water twice a day for one month

after 3 days of Shodhana Karma (bio-purification). Patients of group B were given only Odana Kalpana 50 g as Mantha preparation with water twice a day for one month. It

was observed that the patients of Amlapitta of group A treated with Odana Kalpana and

Virecana Yoga showed maximum percentage of improvement, i.e., 53.20% whereas it

was 42.01% in patients of group B. No side effects were noted in any of the patients

during the trial period. Odana Kalpana is effective in the management of Amlapitta and also it is cost-effective. Bio-purification or purgation helped further to enhance the drug

efficacy.

Bee Venom Therapy: An Alternative Treatment

Abstract Herein, it is proposed and hypothesized that bee honey and venom regimens which had

been used in the Ayurvedic treatment of arthritis, eczemas and dermatitis would be a

possible treatment option for psoriasis which is a common, chronic, and recurrent inflammatory disease of the skin characterized by erythematous and scaling plaques. The

etiopathogenesis of psoriasis is not exactly known but it has been shown that Th2 cell

activity and IL-2 production are reduced in the disease. Elevated levels IL-1 α and β mRNA were found to be expressed in the keratinocytes cultured from the psoriatic

lesions. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, autoimmune and systemic inflammatory

disease of unknown etiology characterized by progressive destruction of synovial membranes and articular surfaces. CD4+ T cells have a major role in the inflammation

of the disease with release of various inflammatory cytokine production such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-1. The authors propose that bee venom therapy may

be an alternative therapeutic option in the treatment of psoriasis that shares the same

pathway with rheumatoid arthritis. Further multicenter and controlled studies should be carried out to clarify this hypothesis.

Efficacy of Yavadi Lepa in Mukhdushika

Sudhir L. Lad*

Kayachikitsa, L. R. P. Ayurved Medical College, Islampur,

Tal,Walwa, Dist. Sangli, Maharashtra, India

Abstract Due to the change in diet pattern, i.e., spicy food, junk food, increasing habit of eating

bakery products, pollution, mental stress, excessive sweating, are the causes for acne or Mukhdushika. Now a day’s youngsters are very much aware of their look. In Ayurveda,

acne is called as Mukhdushika. Generally it appears in the adolescents – in the age of

16–19 in males and in 16–17 in females. It occurs when pores of the skin become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. According to Ayurveda, acne or Mukhdushika is a

message from your body telling you that something is wrong inside your body in Dosha

system like, stomach is upset, or having acidity, changing diet habits or you are moving from healthy diet to unhealthy diet or lifestyle. Exposure to polluted environment and

sweating can also make the condition worse. Strong soaps, hard scrubbing, and pricking at pimples can make acne worse. In this clinical trial, the author has taken patients from

age group of 15–35 years from different socio-economic groups, and from both sexes. All

patients were diagnosed and assessed on Ayurvedic classical signs and symptoms and results are enthusiastic.

Abstract No doubt, Acharya Charak has described different applications of milk very thoroughly,

but Sushruta Samhita – a surgery-based text also holds a great value of medicinal

principles in the curative aspects of diseases which also must be acknowledged. In practice, it is observed that milk is the only diet for infants up to at least six months. It is

considered as the best diet in Udara and other Vyadhis/conditions. But, it must be

remembered that all Dravyas have some beneficial and some harmful effects. Kashyapa Samhita has mentioned properties and uses of Kshira very descriptively. There are many

references in the texts, where milk is considered as a Hetu for certain diseases or conditions. In this modern age, nobody thinks of consuming Pathyakara diet. Consuming

the Apathyakara Ahara is stated to cause many diseases or conditions. Milk is one such

Ahara. Though it is considered as Jati Satmya, Amruta, etc., but Ayukti-Purvaka use may even harm individuals.

Use of Medhya Annapan for Prevention and Management

of Atattvabhinivesha; Mahagada

Shalinee Kumari*, Dharmendra Mishra Smt. Urmila Devi Ayurvedic College of Medical sciences and Hospital, Hoshiarpur (Punjab), India

Abstract Ayurveda accepts the importance of food in the form of first Upastambha. They described

several conditions and diseases which are directly related to the food which are taken by a person; Attatvabhinivesha is one of them. Attatvabhinivesha called Mahaagada is a

serious psychological perversion. Spiritually, it is the cause of sorrow of the world in the

form of global problem. It causes considerable disability imposing a heavy burden of multidirectional sufferings and financial losses. It constitutes 8% of global burden of all

diseases measured as disability adjusted life years (DALY). Prevalence of mental illness is estimated at about 10/1000 population, 80% of mental illness is found in developing

countries. Food is the main mediation of health procurement. People indulge in habitual

intake of food as impure, cold, unctuous, suppression of the natural urges, etc. This review article proves the importance of Medhya Annapana in the prevention and

management of Attatavabhinivesha (paranoia) a psychological perversion. Psychic perversion like Atattvabhinivesha mainly occurs due to Malinaahara because it vitiates

all three Dosas, i.e., Vata, Pitta, Kapha, and two Mansika Dosa Raja and Tama. Medhya

Aanapana increases the intellectual power; memory power and recalling capacity of the persons. Because nervous tissues like other tissues of the body require energy for

metabolic functions, proteins for cell synthesis, and vitamins as components of the

enzyme systems and mineral elements as activators of metabolic reactions and to

maintain homeostasis of the fluid environment. This types of symptoms mainly occurs in

those type of persons which have aggravated Raja and Tama Dosa means and take Malinaahara (impure, putrefied, have low nutritive value). All above description justifies

the value of Medhya Annapana in Attatvabhinivesha and it is also clear that such types of

food articles are useful for both physical and mental entities, for maintenance of wholesome life.
