Tackle Heart Health

Statins are best known for lowering cholesterol, but they may protect people who are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years. Factors include smoking, having diabetes or having a family member who developed premature heart disease. Talk with your doctor about whether a statin is right for you.

Choose a Better Path Research shows you may help prevent colon cancer when you make the following choices: taking calcium supplements, limiting how much red meat you eat, drinking alcohol in moderation, eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, exercising, and not smoking. Getting screened is another strategy for protection. Talk with your doctor about the screening that is best for you.

Gain Better Control When it comes to controlling your diabetes, your mind

goes right to daily blood sugar monitoring. However, there are several other important tests you need regularly to keep your diabetes in check. Make sure you talk with your doctor about a testing schedule for your kidney function, A1c, blood pressure and cholesterol. Don’t forget eye, foot and dental exams as well.

STOP PAIN SAFELY If your doctor prescribes an opioid for pain, talk about the risks and benefits. Ask whether other medicines, physical therapy or exercise could help instead. In some cases, these options work better than opioids with less risk.

How to Fight Fatigue Feeling tired? Get moving! Regular physical activity helps

fight fatigue by improving your energy levels. Take a walk with a friend. Join a tai chi class. Start slowly and work up to 150 minutes of exercise per week. Be sure to practice good sleep habits, too. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Avoid naps longer than 30 minutes. And always drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration—a cause of fatigue.

Up, Up, and Away If you’re flying this summer, remember to place all medically necessary medication in your carry-on bag. Use original drug containers when possible. Request assistance in advance if you’re unable to walk long distances. Contact the airline’s disability or special assistance desk to discuss free wheelchair services and other accommodations. Take these steps for an easier and less hectic trip. After that, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride!

Make a DifferenceResearch shows that volunteering may help you feel happier and more satisfied with life, decrease feelings of depression and stress, improve your self-esteem, and even boost your physical health. So pass along the kindness by volunteering. The more selfless your motives, the more you may get out of it. Not sure where to start? Try www.seniorcorps.gov. This federal government program connects people ages 55 and older with community service programs.

Jot down your thoughts and feelings in a daily journal. It can help you relax, as well as work through emotions and stress.

Hit Stress Head-On Stress can be a mess for your health, unless you practice techniques to control it. For a week, write down what has been stressing you out. Step back and ask, “Can I control this?” If not, work on responding differently. Also, talk with someone about your stress. Take time to plan activities that you love. This can help worries roll off your shoulders.

Give Yourself a Break When daily tasks become too time-consuming or

difficult, you might consider in-home help. Having someone else do the “heavy lifting” leaves you more time to enjoy yourself. Reach out to a nonmedical home care agency for assistance with nonmedical needs, such as light housekeeping. If you need more support, a home health agency can help match you with nursing services and more. Talk with your doctor for care recommendations.

Don’t Sweat ItGetting called back after a mammogram doesn’t mean there’s bad news. Follow-up appointments are common. Fewer than one in 10 people who need more tests actually have cancer. It could just be that your breast tissue is dense, or there is a calcification or benign mass.

Your doctor will determine what additional tests you need. Talk with him or her about your results and concerns.

Protein PowerWhen it comes to protein, quality counts. Skip the fried chicken and pork ribs, and choose healthy sources instead. This includes wild salmon, black or pinto beans, eggs, low-fat Greek yogurt, sirloin or ground beef that is at least 92 percent lean, and unsalted nuts, like almonds or cashews. Boost your intake of fish and low-fat dairy, too. And when choosing meat, skip the processed stuff and opt for fresh, leaner cuts.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH Two out of three people with diabetes also have high blood pressure. Manage high blood pressure by reducing salt, losing weight, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking and taking blood pressure medicine, if needed. Plus, be sure to share your home blood pressure readings with your doctor.
