What a fantastic year it has been for me as current chair of the Birmingham Disability Sports Forum. The group has been busy helping to create even more sporting activities for all, and this is due to many more volunteers, organisations, clubs

and National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) getting involved with enthusiasm and getting in contact with our highly valued team.

Over the years I have been a volunteer and Trustee of The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) and the Dwarf Sports Association (DSAuk). I would encourage any disabled person who feels they would like to get involved in this way to just do it - I learnt so much as I went along and feel so good that I have put back a little of what it has given me and my children, who also have my disability. Don’t think that you have nothing

to give, because everyone is valued and supported in this world of sport!

I myself as Chairperson have witnessed so many fantastic changes in the city over the past 12 months in sport. From new facilities being

developed, to the numerous great events delivered by dynamic staff and volunteers.

I am so excited to see how our home grown Brummie talent performs at the Rio Paralympic Games; the wonderful Ellie Simmonds, Jordanne Whiley, Robert Oliver, Jack Rutter - to name but a few.

The National Dwarf Games are hosted here in Birmingham each year, and in 2016, a record 200 took part - our best yet! Festivals like this help to inspire, encourage and bring pride to people from all ages, backgrounds and abilities, so please don’t miss out as we all do know sport and activity changes lives!

Enjoy Every Moment

April Barrett MBEChair of the Birmingham Disability Sports Forum

I am honoured to be ambassador for Birmingham Inclusive Sports Fest 2016. When I was told I would never walk again, aged 26, I wondered how I’d ever have fun…

The opportunity to try new sports helped my confidence grow and I met wonderful people. Four years later I became a Paralympian in Alpine Skiing. I have since won 6 World Cup medals and represented GB at two Winter Paralympic Games!

The power of sport to inspire is infinite. It brings people and communities together to have fun and excel. I love trying new sports and enjoy wheelchair basketball and tennis, swimming, kayaking and handcycling. I enjoy the feeling of inclusiveness and community spirit that sport brings.

I have also learnt a lot and had tremendous fun in the process.

Having just had a baby, I appreciate how hard it can be to make the time or find the confidence to play sport, but it’s amazing what you can achieve when you get out there and try new things!

“ I’m extremely passionate about sport for all, regardless of level or ability, and I believe that BISF 2016 will provide these opportunities for disabled people to get involved in a range of sports and activities, as well as providing pathways for these individuals to continue participating long into the future. I encourage anyone with or without a disability to get involved. You never know, you may find something that could change your life! If nothing else it will be a fun, inclusive week celebrating everything great that disability sport encompasses”

Birmingham is the second largest city in England and has a population of 200,000 people with a disability. Despite this, 76% of disabled people living in our city do

not take part in ANY sport or physical activity at all - higher than the national average.

From Saturday 17th September – Sunday 25th September 2016, the fourth annual Birmingham Inclusive Sports Fest will take place in the city, offering inspirational inclusive sports taster days that will cater for individuals with a range of impairments.

The activity ‘open days’ will aim to encourage residents of Birmingham to come along and experience inclusive or

disability-specific activities they may never have tried before. Not only is BISF an exciting campaign that aims to encourage people from all walks of life, ages and abilities to have fun and be active & healthy; but it also provides the opportunity to raise the profile of localorganisations in Birmingham who dedicate their time to delivering inclusive activities in their local communities.

The longer-term outcomes for BISF are to ensure that inclusive pathways into recreational opportunities are improved and better communicated, and that more high quality opportunities for all individuals with an impairment are established to enable talent to flourish.

The only thing left to do is to take a look at what BISF week 2016 has to offer!

“ During my teenage years, my sight deteriorated significantly but I didn’t want to resort to just listening to football on the radio, I still wanted to have a kick around with my mates. Judo was the closest thing to love at first sight. It was inclusive and I really thrived on the chance to test myself against my sighted counterparts which gave me a sense of feeling equal. I believe Birmingham Inclusive Sports Fest is a fantastic opportunity to make friends and most importantly ignite a new passion”.
