TRANSCRIPT
The Society’s logo has been a source of much discussion over the years and
there have been attempts to introduce a new logo design, all of which were
unsuccessful. We know that the animals depicted in the logo are
disproportionate - a kiwi is not the same size as a kangaroo - but our
members have embraced the logo as an enduring symbol of the Society. As
a senior Fellow of the Society once said, “we know the logo is corny but we
love it all the same!”
The logo in its current form was introduced in 1988 but it was not the first
iteration of the logo. The inaugural logo comprised the kangaroo and the
kiwi, representing Australia and New Zealand, and a red heart under a
sun. The second version (1988) removed the sun and the form of the
animals was changed so they were standing upright.
At its November meeting, the Board approved a refreshed design of the
CSANZ logo. The key elements of the kangaroo, kiwi and heart have been
retained but the design is simpler, modern and better able to be translated
to creative digital formats.
While the kiwi may still be the same size as the kangaroo it is important to
note that the message that this image portrays is one of equality, that is,
the Society is committed to the promotion of the highest standards of
education, training, research and practice in cardiovascular medicine,
surgery, nursing and allied health subjects, and the promotion of equitable
access to high quality cardiovascular healthcare for all Australians and
New Zealanders.

Travelling Fellowship Report
I was very fortunate to receive a CSANZ
Travelling Fellowship, which afforded me the
opportunity to attend the Annual Scientific
Sessions of the American College of Cardiology 2017
in Washington DC. From late-breaking trials to
the Young Investigator awards, the conference
boasted a wide spectrum of research in
cardiology from burgeoning and eminent figures
worldwide. Attending the fellow-in-training
sessions was also beneficial in getting practical
advice from prominent clinician-researchers.
The highlight for me, however, was the
opportunity to present on the final day of the
scientific session. I was fortunate enough to have
two abstracts accepted in mini-oral moderated
sessions. The study that generated interest with
both the ACC faculty and some industry
sponsors was our findings on the accuracy of
heart rate estimation of commercially available
smart watches in arrhythmias (Apple Watch and
Fitbit). This was borne out of the clinical scenario
of patients seeking medical assistance based on
‘abnormal’ heart rate readings on their wearable
devices. Interestingly, our study showed that the
devices were accurate in certain arrhythmias
such as atrial flutter but reported varying
accuracy among patients in atrial fibrillation.
I am very grateful to the CSANZ for their
support in attending the ACC Scientific sessions.
It has provided me with inspiration for ongoing
involvement in clinical and translational
research.

Travelling Fellowship Report
In May, I had the wonderful opportunity of being
invited to present the findings of my PhD at the
European Society of Cardiology, EuroHeartCare
conference in Jönköping, Sweden. The CSANZ
EuroHeartCare Travelling Fellowship made it
possible for me to accept this invitation, and it
was an honour to be the inaugural recipient.
My PhD is investigating the best way to target
basic life support training to family members of
cardiac patients, as cardiac patients are at higher
risk of future cardiac emergencies from chest
pain through to cardiac arrest. I presented the
results of my feasibility study- incorporating
basic life support training into a cardiac
rehabilitation program, in the “Sudden Cardiac
Death and Arrhythmia Management” session. I
was also given the opportunity to present recent
updates to the European Resuscitation
Guidelines in the “Be Guidelines Smart”
symposium.
The congress was well attended by nurses and
allied health professionals from all over Europe
which provided a fantastic opportunity to meet
people whose work I had read and referenced.
The research presented at the conference was of
high-quality and in addition to the scientific
sessions, included moderated poster sessions, a
fascinating clinical case session and an oral
abstract session specifically for doctoral students.
Attending the congress exposed me to the latest
international cardiac research from leading
experts and ideas and motivation to continue my
own program of research.
The CSANZ EuroHeartCare travelling fellowship
provides a fantastic opportunity to attend this
international congress and I am very grateful to
have had this support. I would highly
recommend fellow nurses and allied health
professionals to submit their work and attend
this congress in the future.

As a translational cardiac researcher, attend-
ance at large meetings such as the European
Society of Cardiology congress in Barcelona
this year is an important priority for me. As
such, I am grateful to the CSANZ for
supporting my attendance.
Just prior to the ESC meeting, I was one of the
invited speakers at the second international
forum of the Takotsubo Support Group, held
at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.
This was really an introduction to me related
to the problems inherent in achieving good
patient understanding of a relatively common
condition, under the somewhat embarrassing
circumstance of limited professional
knowledge. This “knowledge vacuum”
seemed to result in widespread alarmist
concepts among patients, and I will in future
give considerable priority to the process of
dissemination of information to the
community.
To me, the ESC meeting was the usual
combination of an overwhelming breadth of
available new cardiac information, together
with the ability to focus on any particular area
of individual interest, and to discuss matters
with overseas colleagues. Apart from
presenting my work on analyses of medium-
term mortality in Takotsubo syndrome which
demonstrates that the size and haemodynamic
impact of initial episodes predict outcomes, I
liaised with key researchers from the Zurich,
Rochester, and Goteborg groups. However,
that was only a small part of the overall
benefit of the experience: there were a great
number of advances “on-show” and overall
this was like a giant information smorgasbord.
I would certainly commend attendance at this,
the world’s largest cardiac meeting to other
members of the profession. A thoroughly
enjoyable experience!

The CSANZ travelling fellowship to ESC
2017 provided me with financial assistance to
travel to Barcelona to present one of my PhD
projects in Brugada Syndrome in an oral
abstract session. Our research highlights the
presence of RVOT structural abnormalities in
patients with Brugada Syndrome, more than
seen in control cohorts, but not to the degree
seen in Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular
Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). My session was
chaired by Dr Peter Schwartz, one of the true
pioneers in the field of inherited arrhythmia
syndromes. It was a privilege to present my
research in his session.
The ESC meeting is the largest cardiology
meeting in the world and the five days were
full of training, education and networking.
The meeting was definitely beyond the scale
of anything I have previously experienced,
both locally in Australia as well as at other
international meetings. There were many
sessions running concurrently that were
appealing to any subspecialty of interest,
with late breaking clinical trials presented
such as COMPASS and CANTOS. The
session I enjoyed the most was a key note
session presenting the new guidelines for
management of valvular heart disease,
something we all see everyday as
cardiologists.
I am very grateful to the Cardiac Society for
providing me with this scholarship and
attending the meeting has fuelled my drive to
continue my ongoing research in cardiac
genetics and inherited arrhythmias.

Travelling Fellowship Reports
With the much appreciated assistance of a
Travelling Fellowship, I was able to participate
in the European Society of Cardiology annual
congress held in Barcelona at the end of
August. I presented two abstracts from our
research into vascular risk assessment,
management and outcomes among people with
atrial fibrillation in NZ primary care, which
prompted a small but enthusiastic number of
delegates to discuss the area with me as the
sessions progressed. I was also able to attend a
half-day meeting of the AF-SCREEN
international collaboration that was held prior
to the congress. The group is focussed on
improving the detection of AF around the
world and this forum allowed me to meet with
investigators from Australia, Norway and
Canada to have an initial discussion about
collaborative research into AF among
indigenous populations.
I would like to thank the Cardiac Society for
offering these fellowships. They are an
invaluable resource that not only allow us to
attend key international meetings but can open
up a range of opportunities to extend our work
and careers.
