COUNCIL NEWS 25th MAY 2016
WESTONIA COMMON CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT
PLAN
Public Comment sought
In late 2014, the Shire of Westonia was awarded funding through the State NRM Office to commission a
Conservation Management Plan (CMP).
The Shire accepted an offer from Eco Logical Australia to produce the CMP. The draft Plan was submitted
to the Shire for discussion in April.
The draft Westonia Common Conservation Management Plan 2016–2021 is a high level plan which
outlines the relationship between a range of suggested subordinate plans.
What the CMP really illustrates is the gaps in formalised knowledge about the Common.
Copies of the plan are available at the Shire Office or on the Shire Website.
Submissions on the Conservation Management Plan are required to be submitted to the CEO by 4pm
Wednesday 8th June 2016.
Further information regarding the plan or its contents are can be obtained by contacting Dylan Copeland
on 0488 471 727 or [email protected]
COUNCIL ROADWORKS
SLOW DOWN THROUGH SHIRE ROADWORKS.
Road users are urged to slow down through Council road works and observe the Speed restrictions.
Several cases of locals speeding through road works have occurred recently with a serious accident not far
away.
These Roadwork’s are done for your benefit so please show courtesy to plant operators and SLOW
DOWN.
Works are currently underway on a 2km section on Goldfields Road, west of Walgoolan South Road.
Winter grading will also commence in the southern parts of the shire and work to the north. It is urged that
all road users use caution when traversing these roads with loose stone on certain sections.
WESTONIA GOLF CAMP
The Shire of Westonia at its recent Council meeting resolved to donate $550 to the Westonia Community
Resource Centre to enable it to continue to run the Westonia Junior Golf Camp with additional funding to be
requested from the Progress Association.
With the withdrawal of key funding from previous years, the camp was in danger of folding, but instead has
been reduced in its size with only one out of the three coaches (Donna Crouch) attending the camp this year. It
is hoped that the previous funding could be restored in future to help retain this valuable community program
for the youth of the shire.
WESTONIA HOOD-PENN MUSEUM
Westonia’s Hood- Penn museum is still looking for one or two old Swinging
Pen doors for their shearing shed scene. If anyone knows of where we could
find some or have a couple to donate please let Jamie or Stacey know.
GIBB RIVER ROAD CHALLENGE
The Shire of Westonia at its recent Council meeting resolved to donate $200 to the Evolution Mining
“Gibb River Road Challenge”, raising funds for the “Sirens of Silence” charity which is designed to raise
awareness of anxiety, depression, PTSD and suicide prevention amongst people within the Emergency
Services.

Commendation
I would just like to thank the Shire of Westonia for having the time, resources & energy to fix the highway between Carrabin & Southern Cross. As a frequent user of this road I have witnessed many road trains trying to get back on the road after finding one or two wheels just off the bitumen in a great big hole. Your willingness to take this on has made me feel safer to travel this road and will indeed save lives.
Thank you once again for doing a great job!!
