The Victorian Minister for Manufacturing Exports and Trade, The Hon. Richard Dalla-Riva MLC, recently announced the winners of the 2012 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards, at a ceremony that brought together over 600 industry leaders.

It is with great pride that NHP can announce themselves as one of those inductees into the prestigious Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

Established in 2001, the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame offers an opportunity to recognise companies and individuals who have the dedication, creativity and energy to take Victorian manufacturing to the next level. Companies that display a sustained contribution to manufacturing excellence over the past five years are eligible for induction into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

Alex Coslovich, NHP’s Director - Product Quality, Engineering & Manufacturing, was called on stage to accept the award on behalf of all at NHP.

“We are honoured to be inducted,” said Alex. “Australian manufacturing is facing some of its toughest challenges in the current economic climate and we feel that our business model allows us to create jobs within this sector and genuinely ‘add value’ to locally assembled products. It is NHP’s objective to continue to cultivate this philosophy and this will allow us to remain competitive well into the future,” he said.

Lloyd Thomas, NHP’s Managing Director, CEO, was also present on the evening. “Being inducted into the 2012 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame is really a true reflection of the great team we have at our Manufacturing facility in Laverton Melbourne, who, day-in and day-out, produce excellence in everything that they do,” he said.

The Hon. Richard Dalla-Riva MLC said the awards were an important part of recognising the strength and success of Victoria’s manufacturing capabilities.

“We have examples of manufacturing companies here in Victoria that lead Australia in sectors such as aerospace and defence, engineering, food processing, fashion and textiles and others that continue to be successful in challenging economic circumstances and these awards celebrate that leadership and innovation,” he said.

NHP would like to congratulate the other seven companies who were also inducted on the night.

As many of us in the industry are well aware, the current economic crisis gripping many countries across Europe and throughout the world is being felt right here in our own country. Even though New Zealand is financially stable, as a trade exposed country also exporting to the Euro Zone, we still feel the tremors of uncertainty that are resonating around the world. Therefore, it is clearly evident that even though we do business at a local level, we are undoubtedly influenced on a global level.

While NHP proudly services customers in Australia and New Zealand and has done so since 1968, the market we serve is no longer bound by what is happening within these two countries. 44 years ago when NHP first commenced operations, it was safe to say that the impact of any changes in the market on a global scale had a very diluted impact on what we did here. Globalisation has changed all that. Markets are now global, projects are now global, companies are now global and even though companies like NHP deal on a local and focused level, competition is global.

As we all know, globalisation has essentially meant that the world has become smaller. In a business sense, this opens up many challenges but also creates great opportunities. The business landscape has changed so dramatically in the last few decades that only the strong and agile will survive.

I am sure we all agree that we don’t just want to survive, we want to grow our businesses and prosper. Our aim at NHP is to help our customer’s undertake projects and implement solutions for their applications that not only increase productivity, but also make a big difference to one’s efficiency. Put simply, we want to help our customers with their sustainable profit growth.

When competition is stiff (and we are now fighting it out on a global scale) the need to be more efficient in all areas of one’s business is critical. One of the great things about NHP, from my viewpoint, is that we are ‘big enough yet small enough’. By that I mean we have the manpower of a 1000 strong NHP team who have the capability and know-how to provide product and solution guidance to our customers with the benefit of being locally-owned and operated. This enables NHP to be nimble and flexible in tackling the needs of the local market which we are extremely focused on. It also gives us a great competitive advantage over our global competitors who, for some may know, the “wheel can turn more slowly” and have different offshore focus.

It is not just our business model that allows us to be efficient. Many of our values that we adhere to demand efficiency in everything we do. It is these values that we live and work by that brings us to our company philosophy of being ‘easy to do business with’.

We equip our team with the knowledge and the tools to provide quick and efficient service to our customers who are often time-poor and in need of a product or solution in a short timeframe. To some extent, we are our customers “unpaid additional staff”. Having a large sales team on the road and stock on hand locally throughout our extensive branch network, ensures NHP can and will provide on time and in full customer service, solutions and product delivery in the shortest possible timeframe.

We are proud to be able to offer to the Australasian market a product range that covers the widest breadth of the industrial electrical and automation low voltage market. Our distribution partnership with Rockwell Automation (Allen Bradley, Sprecher & Schuh) combined with our world-class industrial product offering, ensures we are truly a “one-stop-shop” for our customer’s electrical solution needs. We offer more products than any other supplier with each product, in the range selected, providing the best fit in terms of quality and application to the local market.

By assisting our customers to be more successful, then in the end, we all reap the benefits.

As the market changes to reflect the need for faster and more efficient products and services, NHP is constantly tasked with satisfying our customer’s demands in a more proficient manner - a responsibility that we take very seriously in getting right. At NHP, our passion for customers recently drove us to think outside the box and revolutionise the way that a distribution board is ordered and manufactured. It was with these principles in mind that ‘NHP Concept Express’ was created to meet and exceed these customer demands.

NHP Concept Express is the combination of ‘NHP Drawing Express’, a software tool that enables the user to instantly design a distribution board from a website, and a new manufacturing line that employs a direct connection to the software tool and uses lean manufacturing methodology to achieve incredible results.

With NHP Concept Express, an NHP staff member is capable of entering a website where they can design the distribution board for their customer by indicating all of the components that are required and more importantly, how they are to be connected. Drawings include General Arrangement, Schematic and Bill of Material details and within minutes of completing this simple process, made easier by a user friendly interface and an easy to follow step by step process, an automatic drawing is generated and sent directly to the NHP staff member via email, which can then be forwarded on to their customer.

With a simple click of a button, this drawing can be turned into an order for manufacture by sending the manufacturing information directly to the manufacturing line, thus enabling the distribution board to be manufactured within 48 hours of clicking that button.

With a short shipping time from Australia to nearby destinations, such as New Zealand, customers are able to obtain a distribution board faster than ever before. This is a first of its kind panelboard ordering solution that revolutionises the way panelboards are ordered in the industrial electrical industry!

Hugo Fernandez , NHP’s Continuous Improvement Manager - Manufacturing based at our National Manufacturing and Distribution Centre in Laverton, is responsible for the development of NHP Concept Express. As Hugo explains, what initially began as an idea to decrease drawing lead-times on orders for customers quickly became a reality with the help of the expert team around him.

“We developed the NHP Drawing Express technology in order to decrease the drawing

lead time from 5-7 working days to a matter of minutes, while completely eliminating any potential human error”, said Hugo.

“In order to satisfy customer demand for fast distribution board manufacture, our next logical step was to create a new dedicated manufacturing line capable of direct communication to the technology so that we remove the steps in between an order being placed and the start of manufacture. This reduces the average lead time of order-to-delivery for a distribution board from 20 working days down to 48 hours!”, he continued.

Another important advantage of the NHP Concept Express tool is that it is also compatible for use via a tablet device (such as an iPad which all NHP sales representatives have) which delivers the same result and also provides an ‘on-demand’ drawing that can be viewed on the particular device. Since the launch of NHP Concept Express in June 2012, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Concept Express is an exciting development in switch board assembly. It combines modern manufacturing processes and principles to deliver a quality product in exceptionally short lead times”, said Richard Wilson (Manufacturing Manager – Laverton).

“The great thing about NHP Concept Express is that it can be used to directly place an order for a distribution board, used as a reference for a particular design, it can be used on the road by our reps, and it can even be used for tendering by sending an example of a drawing with the quote. That on its own can assist NHP in our customer promise of ‘what they want, when, where and how they want it’”, he continued.

NHP will continue to further improve and innovate NHP Concept Express to ensure our service to our customers remains second to none. With a range of features and benefits soon to be added to NHP Concept Express including external lighting control, accessory modules, MOD6, locking off devices, and many more, there is no better time to take advantage of this fantastic resource and experience the difference today.

If you would like any further information regarding NHP Concept Express, or would like to place an order, simply contact your local NHP Sales Representative.

As everyone well knows, forward thinking and planning is critical in our industry so as to ensure a safer future for one’s operations. Constant revision of equipment and being aware of any potential risks can be the difference between being faced with costly breakdowns in terms of both time and money or peace of mind and confidence in your equipment’s performance. At the Amcor Beverage Cans manufacturing site in Dandenong, Victoria, they recently optimised production processes by isolating a risk to the business and taking a series of steps to amend this. Their first point of call? NHP.

After using the same brand of PLCs for close to 30 years, Amcor decided to implement the ‘Body Maker Project’ which offered an opportunity to upgrade these PLCs in 11 Body Makers across the plant. Although the PLCs were delivering on performance, it was becoming increasingly evident that these particular models were gradually becoming obsolete, with spare parts subsequently being overly expensive. Aware of the risks this was presenting, a business decision was made to progressively replace the PLCs and further avoid any costly and unnecessary breakdowns.

Working with Amcor’s electrical contractors SPL Electrics and AllSpark, NHP were able to engineer a fully integrated Allen-Bradley® solution that involved not only replacing the existing PLCs but also included sensors, drives and other network equipment to complete the fit out. As authorised distributors of Rockwell Automation’s Allen-Bradley range, NHP were able to offer quick delivery time on the requested parts and offer service support from local product specialists who were available to provide hands on demonstrations and advice when required.

“Our exclusive relationship with Rockwell Automation enabled us to conduct product testing which was really beneficial to both the customer and our overall solution”, said Bevan Pitcher, NHP’s Sales Representative on the Amcor project.

“It provided us with the opportunity to gauge the suitability of the products on-site and gave the electricians and engineers a chance to familiarise themselves with the products”.

The progressive upgrades at Amcor Beverage Cans in Dandenong have so far provided a successful outcome for the site and with benefits already being felt across the plant floor, the move to upgrade has proved to be a smart one.

“We are now into our second year of upgrades and over the next four years this project is planned to upgrade all PLCs on-site to complete the fully integrated Allen-Bradley solution”, offered Amcor’s Reliability Engineer, Tuan Tran.

“We are currently working on Body Maker 3 and with eight to go we have a very positive outlook on the benefits we will receive. The 24/7 spare parts service that NHP are able to offer us as a result of their partnership with Rockwell Automation has also enabled us to reduce the spare parts we keep on-site here at Dandenong “, Tran continued.

No time to Daydream when it comes to quality service

Daydream Island (DDI) is one of seven islands of the Molle Group (a sub-group of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia) that measures just 1km in length and 400m at its widest point. It is considered to be a mecca for sailing enthusiasts as well as those that prefer the view from under the water with exotic sea life from the Great Barrier Reef in the surrounding waters. It was also recently the job site for NHP Service Technician Andrew White who, working with local contractor Chaffey Power, was able to engineer a solution highlighting NHP’s ‘round-the-clock’ service promise.

Following a synchronisation fault that occurred in a generator on the island last year, the job, initiated by Chaffey Power, called for NHP to assist in converting an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) from an AT model to an advanced AR MK3 model. Detailed scoping between Steve Whitehead from Chaffey Power (Mackay), DDI management and NHP helped form a solution that required several products including an ATO to AR220 conversion kit and a new AR220 3-pole ACB and carriage which was to replace the older model.

Due to NHP’s ability to provide the desired products from our local Rockhampton Branch, plans to carry out the job were able to proceed without delay which proved to be ever valuable in meeting the project deadline.

“Given the tight timeframe we had to work with and the location, we went armed to the teeth with everything we thought we might need. Once we started we knew it would not be possible to go back to the older circuit breaker, and power had to be back on in five hours. Andrew White’s product knowledge and experience was excellent and together with myself and Tony Whitehead from Chaffey Power this was able to be achieved”, offered Steve Whitehead from Chaffey Power.

With the largest product management, technical and engineering support and sales team in the Australasian electrical industry, it is NHP’s focus to provide a quality service model. A ’24 x 7 x 365’ service promise is central to this offering and this was put to the test at the DDI project when the upgrade was given a one day completion deadline, however the day before work was scheduled to start, weather warnings threw plans into a spin!

“Weather reports confirmed that there was a cyclone on the way overnight and with the contractor set to come across on the 1am barge from the mainland, it took until the morning before anyone knew if the job was going to go ahead or not”, said Andrew who flew into DDI the day prior to the scheduled start time.

“But we were determined to get the job done and at 4am we received an SMS from the contractor saying that he had made it. We then started work on-site at 6am and were finished before 5pm, working in over 30°C and high humidity conditions”.

The successful strip-out, install, convert and test were testament to the joint efforts of Chaffey Power, the team at DDI and NHP. The diligent scoping, correct product selection and determined execution of the project were key factors in the successful completion and Steve Whitehead from Chaffey Power in Mackay was very pleased with the support he received from NHP.

“It was a great team effort and although there were a couple of little hiccups in lining everything up we were able to engineer a solution quickly and everything went smoothly. When Chaffey Power has more of these to do we will look forward to working with NHP on them”.

NHP offers a range of on-site field service solutions to suit a wide range of needs. Further backed by supply partners, NHP can provide specialist support for Preventative Maintenance, Installation & Commissioning, Design & Audit and Emergency breakdown service, as well as a range of other support services.

ACB remote racking for first class safety with NHP TemPower Rack

Reaching the Apex in gearbox technology!

Manually racking breakers between isolated, test and connected positions is a potentially dangerous operation for switchroom personnel. This procedure usually represents a point in time where large electrical connections are being made while on-site personnel are in front of the breaker. There are a number of products in the market to protect personnel from this dangerous situation, but the best protection is in the form of isolation of the operator from the danger.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as arc flash suits can be used to protect workers, however these are cumbersome and uncomfortable to work in. This often means that necessary site maintenance is avoided. With this in mind, NHP has developed a ‘remote racking device’ for use with the Terasaki brand ‘AR’ Air Circuit Breaker (ACB). TemPower Rack is much quicker and easier to use, allowing regular maintenance to be carried out safely and without hassle.

The TemPower Rack completely isolates the operator from the front of the switchboard during the mechanical racking operation. It is controlled by a pendant that is connected to the motor racking unit via a 10 metre cable. This means that the operator can be

outside of the switchroom, away from any potential source of injury. The TemPower Rack is completely battery powered, removing the need for external power leads across the ground during operation which are a potential safety hazard.

The TemPower Rack also incorporates a specially designed lifting trolley for ACB bodies, which can weigh up to 180kg. As ACBs are protective devices it is important that they are placed on a level surface and maneuvered carefully so as to prevent damage to them.

unlike other devices on the market, TemPower Rack does not require any modification to the ACB in order to operate. This allows the TemPower Rack to be used easily on existing installations, and allows the operator to move quickly from breaker to breaker.

The TemPower Rack received a great reception at the Mining Electrical Safety Conference in Brisbane in July and we are pleased to announce that the TemPower Rack is now available to order.

THE SOLUTION

NHP has developed a ‘remote racking device’ for use with the Terasaki brand ‘AR’ Air Circuit

Breaker (ACB). The TemPower Rack completely isolates the operator from the front of the

switchboard during the mechanical ‘racking’ operation. The base model version, called

‘Rack Attack 1.0’, is controlled by a pendant that is connected to the motor racking unit via

a 10 meter cable. NHP will soon have a wireless communication option for control via a

remote interface such as a touch screen.

This technology means that the operator can be outside of the switchroom away from any

potential source of injury. The TemPower Rack is battery powered, completely removing it

from the main electrical system and ensuring overall operation is quick and easy.

The TemPower Rack features a specially designed lifting trolley, which provides safe and

robust mounting for the drive mechanism and also serves as a lifting trolley for ACB bodies.

The TemPower Rack prototype received a great reception

at the MESA Mining Electrical Safety Conference in Brisbane last

year and NHP is pleased to announce that the TemPower Rack

will be available for sale from early July 2012.

It is with great excitement that NHP can announce the release of one of its latest products for the power distribution market: The Grizz-Bar Isolation Chassis!

Designed and manufactured in Australia, this isolation chassis has been designed to meet the needs of data centres, hospitals and any other application that requires maximum “up time” from its power distribution system.

The new isolation Grizz-Bar Chassis from NHP combines quality and unique features to raise the standard for busbar chassis systems. Some of these features include:

• Super strong design! High short circuit current withstand ratings unmatched by any other isolation chassis on the market today!

• Superior temperature rise ratings! The Grizz-Bar has a genuine 250A rating, tested to AS/NZS 3439.1:2002 The Grizz-Bar runs cooler!

• The main busbars are fully encapsulated including the neutral bar.

• The neutral bar can be isolated, is fully rated and can be padlocked off!

• The NHP Grizz-Bar has identical dimensions to the CD and NC chassis and with its comparable Icw and temperature rise ratings it is a direct replacement.

• The unique attachment bar can convert a single switch toggle into a 2P or 3P toggle, ensuring multi-phase circuits cannot accidentally have one pole switched!

• The Grizz-Bar chassis is available as a single end feed or a universal feed for total flexibility!

• Suitable for use with standard NHP Din-T 6, Din-T 10 MCBs, RCDs, RCBOs and accessories such as Din-T Shunt trips, uVTs, alarms and auxilary switches

If you’re after the benchmark in miniature circuit breaker chassis design, the choice is simple. Choose Grizz-Bar from NHP.

NHP’s new Grizz-Bar Isolation Chassis to raise the standard…

PADLOCK ACCESSORY (Innovation Patent No. 2010100182) A unique lock off attachment can be fitted to the chassis ensuring the isolator interlock switch can be padlocked open / off for safety.

DIRECT CONNECT TAGS Large copper connection tags allow a standard NHP Katko isolator to be direct connected as a main switch with the Grizz-Bar. A Terasaki 250A MCCB can also be used with an adaptor kit. Both solutions are rated at 250A in accordance with AS/NZS 3439.1:2002

ISOLATOR INTERLOCK(Patent applied for No. 2011202133) Innovative isolator interlock ensures the tee off can only be switched ‘live’ once a circuit breaker is fitted. The button must be pressed in by a fitted MCB/RCBO to release the isolation switch.

COLOURED PHASE SWITCHES Coloured interlock sliders ensure easy phase identification.
