Over$ the$ past$ decade,$ costs$ for$ back$ pain$ care$ have$
risen$ faster$ than$ overall$ medical$ expenses.$ Yet,$ even$
as$ treatment$ gets$ more$ intensive,$ annual$ surveys$ of$
those$ with$ back$ pain$ report$ steadily$ worse$
impairments.$ While$ work$ disability$ due$ to$ heart$
disease$ has$ been$ falling,$ disability$ due$ to$ back$ pain$
has$ been$ increasing.$ Growing$ evidence$ suggests$ that$
more$ MRI$ scans,$ narcotic$ painkillers,$ injections,$ and$
surgery$aren't$the$solution.$
Dr.$ Richard$Deyo$ documents$ these$ disturbing$ trends$
and$ advocates$ an$ alternative,$ less$ intuitive$ approach$
involving$ more$ active$ patient$ engagement;$ exercise$
and$ cognitive$ therapy$ to$ reduce$ fear;$ and$ shared$

There$are$so$many$competing$approaches$to$treating$back$pain$that$you're$very$ likely$to$get$
multiple,$ sometimes$ conflicting$ recommendations.$Back$ pain$ is$ so$ common$ that$ almost$ anyone$
can$hang$out$a$shingle,$claim$to$have$a$cure,$and$make$a$living.$One$of$the$things$we'll$explore$is$
why$so$many$treatments$of$dubious$value$can$survive.$
But$things$aren't$as$bleak$as$this$may$sound.$The$reality$is$that$there$are$effective$treatments.$
They$don't$promise$a$permanent$cure$of$all$back$pain,$but$they$offer$big$improvements,$and$much$
better$ quality$ of$ life.$ And$ they$ are$ generally$ treatments$ that$ the$ patient$ has$ within$ his$ or$ her$
control.$The$key$to$ improvement$ is$often$taking$a$more$active$role$ in$decisionUmaking$and$selfU

Jules$ Pretty$ explores$ life$ and$ change$ in$ a$ dozen$environments$and$cultures$across$the$world.$In$deserts$and$ marshes,$ along$ coasts$ and$ mountaintops,$ across$steppes$ and$ snowscapes,$ he$ examines$ the$relationships$between$people$and$ place.$His$ aim$ is$ to$reveal$ important$ lessons$ for$ industrialized$ countries$facing$ the$ deleterious$ effects$ of$ modern$ consumption$on$the$natural$world.$
Pretty$shows$how$communities$have$changed$the$land$and$ how$ the$ land$ has$ changed$ people:$ how$ "nature"$has$ both$ shifted$ and$ endured.$Although$he$ chronicles$the$ tragic$ loss$of$ cultures$ and$ their$ ecologies,$ he$ also$reveals$a$world$of$steadfast$commitment$and$reasoned$hope.$

I$ walked$ with$ local$ Māori$ people$ along$ the$ coasts$ of$ the$Pacific,$ climbed$ newly$ accessible$ mountains$ in$ China$ with$thousands$ of$ others,$ and$ journeyed$ into$ petroglyph^rich$deserts$ of$ Australia$ where$ oil$ and$ gas$ have$ come$ but$ the$locals$ are$ extinct.$ I$ travelled$ with$ nomads$ across$ the$continent^wide$ steppes$ of$ southern$ Siberia,$ walked$ and$boated$ in$ the$ inland$ swamps$ of$ southern$ Africa$ rich$ with$wildlife,$ and$ journeyed$ out$ onto$ the$ Arctic$ cold$ with$ ice^fishermen$ in$ Finland.$ I$ explored$ the$ coasts$ and$ inland$marshes$ of$ eastern$ England$ and$ the$ coastal$ glens$ of$Northern$Ireland,$trekked$with$Innu$people$across$the$taiga's$snowy$ forests$ and$ lakes$ of$ the$ Labrador$ interior.$ The$passages$ continued$ in$ the$ Americas$ on$ the$ small$ farms$ of$Amish$horse^cultures$ that$ thrive$ alongside$ the$ failing$ cities$of$ the$ rust^belt,$ then$ with$ Cajun$ swampers$ of$ the$ deep$South's$ largest$ inland$ swamp,$ and$ finally$ in$ the$ deadly$deserts$ of$ the$ west,$ to$ the$ lowest$ places$ where$ live$ the$Timbisha,$and$to$some$of$the$highest,$ending$up$at$the$Pacific$Ocean$again.$
I$ met$ and$ travelled$ with$ people$ defending$ nature^based$cultures,$proud$of$their$relationships$with$the$land,$and$only$willing$to$join$with$the$modern$world$on$their$terms.$Lessons$for$moderns$may$lie$in$some$of$the$stories$from$these$places.$

For'Friendship'
GREGORY$JUSDANIS$
Although$ it$ may$ come$ as$ no$ surprise$ that$ scientists$ and$ social$
scientists$are$ latecomers$ to$the$study$of$friendship,$it$ is$surprising$
that$ the$ subject$ also$ has$ been$ ignored$ by$ the$ humanities.$ In$ fact,$
Gregory$ Jusdanis$writes,$ friendship$has$been$largely$overlooked$in$
western$thought$since$Classical$times.$
Jusdanis$ considers$ what$ he$ sees$ as$ the$West's$ social$ ambivalence$
toward$ friendship.$To$ find$the$reasons$behind$ this,$he$looks$at$the$
world$of$literature.$Friendship$and$literature,$he$says,$have$a$natural$
affinity,$both$having$been$tangential$to$human$concerns$for$at$least$
the$ last$ century.$ This$ social$ marginalization$ has$ given$ each$ an$
empathetic$ perspective—the$ capacity$ to$ grasp$ the$ view$ of$ other$

of$the$Scientific$Revolution$and$its$legacy.$
Theresa$MacPhail$explores$the$global$public$health$experience$of$the$
2009$ H1N1$ pandemic$ Rather$ than$ offer$ one$ "definitive"$ narrative$
however,$she$uses$an$approach$she$calls$a$"pathography."$Typically$
associated$ with$ medicine$ or$ literature$ to$ describe$ a$ biographical$
study$of$ the$effects$of$a$disease$on$ individuals$or$communities,$ the$
term$here$ encompasses$ the$multiple$ narratives$ of$ the$ pandemic—
historical,$ biological,$ social,$ individual,$ political,$ economic,$ and$
cultural—which$ she$ considers.$ To$ understand$ any$ pandemic$ or$
infectious$disease$outbreak,$she$argues,$one$must$consider$all$these$
narratives$at$once.$

and$ intellectual$ advances$ achieved$ under$ Social$ Democratic$
leadership.$Yet$Austrian$conservatives$coined$ the$ term$ in$ the$1920s$
to$ condemn$ precisely$ those$ Social$ Democrats$ and$ their$ policies$ as$
presaging$the$Bolshevization$of$Austria.$
Janek$ Wasserman$ corrects$ the$ picture$ of$ interwar$ Vienna,$ arguing$
that$despite$its$reputation$as$a$bastion$of$socialist$thought$and$praxis,$
it$ was$ a$ battleground$ between$ progressive$ (red)$ and$ conservative$
(black)$ intellectuals$ for$ dominance$ and$ political$ influence.$ "One$
cannot$begin$ to$understand$ the$richness$of$ 'Red$Vienna'$without$ its$
