LEARNING STRATEGIESc1A: Use prior knowledge and experiences to understand meanings in English.

The English Language Enhancement (ELE) is divided into three sections. In the first two sections, the learning activities correlate to certain lessons in the Reading Horizons v5 software and direct instruction. The third section provides activities to aid in learning the English culture in the U.S. Specifically, students learn how to guess the meanings of unknown words from context (ELE, pp. 36-37).

c1B: Monitor oral and written language production and employ self-corrective techniques or other resources.

Throughout the software, students have opportunities to record themselves and compare their pronunciation to that of a native speaker. Students learn how to self-monitor in the English Language Enhancement (ELE) (ELE, pp. 48-49).

The English Language Enhancement booklet integrates vocabulary strategies, pronunciation practice, and a culture reference to expand the program’s usefulness for English-language learners. Students will practice the various strategies and will participate in evaluations at the end of each strategy to help determine which strategy best suits them in learning the English language.

LISTENINGc2A: Distinguish sounds and intonation patterns of English with increasing ease.

Sentences and Intonation, Lesson 6: Students will learn to distinguish rising and falling intonation and appropriate use for each intonation pattern using sentence types (i.e., wh- questions, yes/no questions, commands, exclamations) (Student Workbook, pp. 13-14).Syllable Stress and the Schwa, Lesson 40 : Students will learn to distinguish syllable stress. Students will also learn that all English vowels can assume the schwa sound in unstressed syllables (Student Workbook, pp.101-102).

c2B: Recognize elements of the English sound system in newly acquired vocabulary, such as long and short vowels, silent letters and consonant clusters.

The Five Phonetic Skills, Lessons 24, 25, 30, 31: Students will learn the five patterns for decoding English-based words using diacritical markings to determine the vowel sound (Student Workbook, pp. 63-66; 77-80; 87-88).Vowel Families O and I , Lesson 26 : Students will learn the word families containing the vowels o and i (e.g., -old, -ild, -ind, etc.) (Student Workbook, pp. 67-68).Sounds of -GH , -IGH , -IGHT , Lesson 34: Students will learn sounds for GH and decode words containing the spellings of -gh, -igh, and -ight (Student Workbook, pp. 85-86).

The Library component contains more than 225 high-interest, low- readability, non-fiction passages that have been leveled and Lexiled© for students. After students complete a reading passage, reading comprehension questions are administered. Students are shown the results of their reading comprehension questions, and they can clearly see which questions they got correct and which were missed. They will then be shown a review screen that will display the score they achieved for the passage. Students have the option to reread the passage to improve their scores, to have the passage narrated to them, to identify words that use skills they have recently studied, or to exit back to the passage-selection screen. Students can see their overall reading level on this screen. It will be modified every time they read a new passage. At the end of each chapter, additional passages will be unlocked based on the student’s reading levels at the end of each chapter.

Embedded in the software, direct instruction lessons, and student materials (Student Workbook and English Language Enhancement), students are exposed to a variety of practice opportunities that build vocabulary, teach grammar skills, and write sentences. As English Language Learners progress through the program, they acquire the skills to decode and spell multi-syllabic words with ease. These skills prepare them to study autonomously and to communicate effectively as more English is acquired.
