Hudson Middle SchoolUltimate Frisbee Study Guide
Ultimate Frisbee is a competitive invasion game that was discovered by students at Columbia High School, in Maplewood, New Jersey, in 1967. The sport popularity spread throughout the collegiate level and national championships have been held among various universities. A regulation game has seven players per team. The official equipment used in this sport is a Wham-o 165-g Frisbee. Basic Rules: The start of play: In the game of Ultimate Frisbee each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense. Scoring : Each time the offense completes a pass to a teammate in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. *A defender may not knock the Frisbee out of the person’s hand. *A Frisbee must be thrown not handed off. * The player with possession of the Frisbee may only pivot on one foot to change direction of the throw; running with the Frisbee is not permitted. The person with the disc (“thrower”) has ten seconds to throw the disc in regulation games.
Movement of the Disc: Movement of the disc is very important when it comes to maintaining possession. The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate (sideways-Flat, back-dump and long –through passes). Accuracy of throwing and catching a Frisbee will help you maintain possession. Critical elements to use when throwing a Frisbee
Backhand-proper grip, throwing shoulder facing target, Frisbee waist high, step with same foot, and follow through to target.
Forehand-proper grip, fingers in L shape, shoulder rotation, Frisbee flat, snap wrist, palm up towards target.
Ch ange of Possession : When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, deflection or interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. This is called a Turnover. To decrease the amount of turnovers practice the critical elements of catching.
One hand above the waist-ready hands, move with Frisbee,4 fingers on top thumb on bottom
One hand below the waist-ready hands, move with Frisbee 4 fingers on bottom and thumb on top
Two hand catch- Close fingers as Frisbee comes to you
Two hand catch- AKA-Pancake bring palms together as Frisbee comes to you
Strategies: Throwers- use pivots and fakes to avoid interception of passes, make fast passes, and use proper timing so the teammate can receive the pass (lead pass). * Receivers-try to remain open by cutting and using deceptive moves (shoulder head fake, v cut, Jab step-misdirection).
*Defensive players- stay in an athletic stance, close in on offense, keep active arms, use side slide/shuffle step to “mark” or guard the offensive player.
