JUST A REMINDER

A significant number of crease nailpullers are returned to suppliers eachyear because of damage that can beavoided – not as a result of defectivematerial or workmanship. It is possiblefor heat treatment or defective metal tobe a problem but be sure you used yourtool correctly before returning it.

Be sure that you cut or rasp the clinches offbefore trying to pull the nails. Start the toolopened as wide as possible to allow thepoints to penetrate any dirt or debris in thecrease and get under the nail head. Thenail puller has to get under the head of thenail to work properly. If you only havecontact with the tips of the tool and then

squeeze and try to pull the nail without firstlifting it you are asking for trouble. (Photo 6- Page 3 shows damaged tip of nail puller, likely a result of trying to pull the nailbefore getting the puller tips completelyunder the nail head. Notice the other pullerhas no damage and has been used muchlonger, but more correctly.)

Once you are under the head, a steadysqueezing pressure should pop the nailloose. You can often hear the nail breakloose from the crease. You will see thatthe nail head is fit snugly into the cavityof the pullers if you have used the toolcorrectly. When the head is in thiscavity, the pressure of the rolling motion

you use to pull the nail will not causedamage to the tool.

From time to time you may want to touchup the nail puller tips so they canpenetrate the debris in the crease and getunder the nail head. You should also besure the tool is not too thick to fit into thecrease. If it appears to be too thick youcan use a belt sander to dress them to athickness that works. Be careful not togrind too aggressively or for too long. Youdon’t want heat to build up and destroythe heat treat. If you can’t hold the toolbecause of the heat or it develops a bluecolor– it’s too hot. Quench it occasionallyas you go through this grinding process.

Use Social Media to be In-The-Know

Start with wide opening. Puller tips are not under nail head; this methodcauses damage to tool.

Tips should go under head.

Pop head up before pulling. Note full contact of tool to nail head. Older tool on right has been modified and usedproperly. Fairly new tool on left with broken tip.
