Today’s political, economic, and social realities, paired with rapid changes in our health care system, present significant challenges to academic health centers in our aim to provide better care to individuals and populations at reasonable cost. This session will highlight six major challenges facing academic health centers in our three mission areas of clinical care, medical research, and medical education, as well as challenges related to health inequities, clinician burnout, and a leadership deficit. Dr. Kirch will also focus on the leadership imperatives necessary to move beyond our current challenges and shape the health care culture of the future. Throughout the session, Dr. Kirch will highlight specific leadership opportunities for psychologists in academic health centers.

experience and scholarship related to the broad dissemination and implementation of evidence-based psychological treatments in large public and private health care systems. The presentation will also review innovative approaches and applied tools recently developed for promoting patient uptake and engagement in evidence-based psychotherapies and other mental health treatments, including direct-to-consumer public awareness resources and a brief pre-treatment intervention and associated toolkit developed for the VA health care system and the community for promoting shared decision-making and treatment engagement in the delivery of mental health care.

Psychologist Workforce Projections: Preparing for the Future
This presentation will describe psychologist workforce projections examining trends in supply and demand from 2015-2030. Findings indicate that psychologist supply is projected to be insufficient to address unmet need for mental health services. Under hypothetical scenarios related to barriers to care and equity, demand could
increase substantially. Areas where demand is projected to grow include services provided to older adults, Hispanic populations, in hospitals, and in the South. Considerations of psychologist diversity and cultural competency will be discussed.
C. Vaile Wright, PhD2/8/19; 10:50-11:50
Translating Clinical Science to Expand Opportunities for Professional Practice: Programs and Policies
The best research on its own rarely changes healthcare. Scientists and practitioners need to work together to identify needs, conduct research and translate findings to inform policy and develop programs to promote evidence-based decision making and care.
Doing so is complicated and challenging for individuals but harnessing the resources of organizations can leverage opportunities. This talk will discuss two American Psychological Association initiatives to advance science informed policy and develop programs for practice: clinical and professional practice guidelines and measurement-based care. These initiatives can inform individual practice as well as system policies and state and federal legislation. A discussion regarding how to build on organizational strengths to reach mutual aims and a consideration of future trends will conclude the program.

Behavioral Science Integration in Primary and Specialty Care - Optimizing Your Integrated Care Toolbox
The aim of this presentation is to elucidate various models and strategies for behavioral health integration. Basic concepts will build to advanced methods for application such as using a CQI model in IPC and beyond. A full depiction of the delivery continuum and
identification of opportunities for implementation will be explored. Tools to gain administrative support, avoid pitfalls, leverage transdisciplinary and educational approaches, and align with organizational goals will be discussed.
Lloyd Berg, PhD, ABPP2/8/19; 2:30-3:30
Expanding Consultation-Liaison Psychology Beyond the Academic Medical Setting
Approximately 18% of US psychologists work in medical hospital settings. Most are located in VA and academic medical centers; little is known about the prevalence or practice patterns of psychologists in non-academic acute care hospitals. Establishing a consultation-
liaison (C-L) psychology service in a community hospital setting is a potentially rewarding practice opportunity for the well-trained clinical health psychologist. In this presentation, practical considerations in developing a private practice C-L service will be covered. Topics will include requisite clinical competencies, the privileging process, common referral reasons, documentation, treatment team integration, billing, and pragmatic ‘survival tips.’ CPT code distributions will be presented to illustrate practice patterns of psychologists in the community hospital setting, based on level of integration.

Invited Speakers Molly Gabriel-Champine, PhD2/8/19; 3:45-4:45
Health, and Barriers to Health, for Transgender People
This presentation will briefly discuss theories related to gender development and identity. It will more fully discuss specific health care concerns, barriers, and medical challenges that transgender people often face. This talk will not only discuss which medical conditions have a higher prevalence rate within the transgender
community, but also how health care providers can best screen and address these concerns. Treatment recommendations and communication strategies will be made.
Jennifer M. Peltzer-Jones PsyD, RN2/9/19; 8:30-9:30
At the EDge: The Role of Psychologists in Emergency Care
The focus of this presentation is to describe the "hot topic" issues in emergency mental health care and the reasons why psychology should be more involved in developing and delivering emergency care.

Chronic Pain and the Opioid Crisis: The Role of the Psychologist on the Medical Team
Mortality related to opioid overdose is strongly associated with prior treatment for chronic pain. Recent medical treatment guidelines have adopted the biopsychosocial model, and emphasize that opioids should be used sparingly for treating pain, while psychological
treatments should be increased. Unfortunately, too few psychologists are familiar with current pain research and treatment protocols. The presentation will review recent research related to chronic pain and opioid use, and will also discuss the role of the psychologist on medical teams that treat patients with painful conditions.
William N. Robiner, PhD, ABPP Paula D. Zeanah, PhD, MSN, RNMary A. Fristad, PhD, ABPP2/9/19; 10:45-11:45
Prescriptive Authority: Poison Pill or Positive Push for Psychologists?
The presentation will provide background on the controversy about prescriptive authority for psychologists (RxP). It will review proponents' contentions for advancing RxP and concerns of psychologists and others regarding these drivers and the APA training model, its impact, and the current status of RxP. The view of a medical school psychologist in Louisiana, a state where psychologists can prescribe, will be provided as well as an update about the recent APA review of the training model.

Telebehavioral Health Best Practices: Where We're at and Where We're Headed
The presenter will provide an overview of telebehavioral health best practices, informed by practice guidelines and research. She will summarize ethical-legal considerations in telepractice with youth and adults. She will draw lessons from ongoing telehealth services in
Kansas, including services in schools and primary care practices. She will conclude with an overview of resources offered through the federally funded Telehealth Resource Centers.
Katherine A. Lingras, PhDDanielle M. Vrieze, PhD2/9/19; 2:00-3:00
Initiating a Diversity and Inclusion Committee within an Academic Health Center Department: Hearts, Minds, and Action
This presentation will discuss the process and preliminary impact of the creation of a committee focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the context of an academic health center. Presenters will share experiences and accomplishments of the first year of this focused committee. Lessons learned, including successes and challenges, as well as preliminary outcome data will be discussed. Participants will reflect on their own home departments and discuss needs and successes with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Particular attention will be paid to the unique nuances of academic health center departments and the potential role for psychologists.
