Students will develop a basic understanding of the size and scope of the agriculture industry and how agriculture affects their daily lives. • Course Description: This course will focus on the science behind the care and management of agricultural animal species. Students will study the major livestock and small/companion animal species as well as the major breeds of equine, dairy, livestock and poultry used in agriculture and in everyday life. Basic anatomy, reproduction, nutrition, health care, and related careers will be examined throughout the course. Students will also become familiar with animal-based industries in Lancaster County and Pennsylvania. The major forms of assessment will be projects and lab exercises. All students enrolled are encouraged to join and actively participate in the Elizabethtown FFA Chapter.

• Course Description: Drawing & Composition is for the serious, self-motivated high school students interested in drawing. Sketching, rendering, contour, gesture, and perspective drawing processes will be used to create works. You will be required to complete projects that are self-defined. Special emphasis will be placed on creating original and authentic work. Pencil, charcoal, marker, colored pencil, pastel and a variety of different media will be explored through various technical & expressive works.

For example, if a you excel at pencil portraits, the expectation would be that you attempt a portrait in a new media or a different subject matter. You will continue to build skills in drawing and design. You will think about their work, explore art history, work individually and in groups, and find connections to other areas of study.

After exploring a variety of 3-d media--clay, paper mache, found object, to name just a few--the students will solve teacher-created “challenges.” The students will choose the appropriate media to get their message across to the viewers. Studies will reference artists, art works, and styles. Critical analysis and interpretation of art works will be included.

• Course Description: Photography begins with understanding its scientific roots and ending with present day digital techniques. You will build a shoebox camera and work with Black & White film. You will learn about modern camera systems and digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop. Taking and manipulating meaningful photographs will be the primary activity of this class. All assignments and experiences are designed to help you develop an appreciation for the photographic process and how images can affect us as individuals and a society. There is a significant amount of outside of class work due to the nature of the course. A personal digital camera is required.

• Course Description: Graphic Design teaches both art and technology. Students will use design to visually communicate ideas and information. Traditional media and the computer will be the primary tools students use. You should be aware however, that while the computer is the primary tool for this class, the main objective is learning design. Basic elements of art and the principles of design use in their work will be emphasized. You will be introduced to the history of and contemporary practices through illustration, advertising, typography, environmental design, and product design will be covered in this course.

Among other activities, students will participate in debates, mock trials, role-playing, class projects, and research law-related topics on the Internet.

• Course Description: This elective course will introduce students to the most fundemental types of traditional stories: myth, legend, and folktale, with special attention to sources, interpretation and written analysis. Content will be drawn from numerous world traditions, including Egyptian, Greek, Norse, and American Indian. Students will explore the literary, societal, and historical influences of these mythologies on the world as a whole. Students will research the history of the civilizations, read their stories of the gods and heroes, and will study the literature, drama and artwork associated with each. Learners will deveop skills through independent and class reading, research, critical analysis, discusion, writing, and application.

Students will also learn how to critique and analyze live

Students will be introduced to journalistic writing, and interviewing, as well as an introductory study of publishing careers and journalistic law, ethics, and responsibility. Participants will become familiar with the CSPA Stylebook and apply it to their writing. Students will learn camera usage and the elements of photojournalism for various media purposes, as well as become proficitent in layout and graphic design skills required for publication and media careers. Participants will use GoogleDocs, Google Classroom, Photoshop, Yearbook Avenue, and Nikon cameras to integrate their skills into the media field.

• Course Description: This introductory course provides hands-on experiences in small kitchen groups and enables students to develop basic kitchen skills while preparing simple recipes. Current dietary guidelines for Americans will be highlighted in the nutritional component of the course. Food safety/sanitation, wise consumer skills in food shopping/purchasing, meal planning, and microwave cooking are additional units discussed. Recipes include dishes from the following areas: fruits/vegetables, milk/cheese, grains, quick breads, and United States regional foods.

023 – Introduction to Health Sciences

• Course Description: This course is designed for ninth and tenth grade students who are interested in a career in the medical or health related fields. Students will explore a variety of possible health careers such as: educators, nurses, therapists (physical, occupational, speech), physicians, technicians, athletic trainers, and paramedics through discussion, research, speakers and field trips. The first marking period will consist of a review of human anatomy and physiology along with common medical terminology. Students will follow the American Red Cross guidelines for Community First Aid and Safety instruction and upon completion of all requirements will be American Red Cross certified. Students will study anatomy, physiology, conditioning and first aid as it applies to sports and sports injuries. The course will allow hands-on experience through taping, splinting and practical application of first aid concepts. This course is recommended for students interested in health related careers.

• Course Description: The M&B curriculum includes both a classroom and fitness-based component. During classroom sessions (typically Tuesdays and Thursdays), students will be introduced to, and actively

engaged in the following health topics: mindfulness, nutrition, current events in health, and brain training (challenges to the 5 core cognitive abilities). The students will also read a selected novel related to the course curriculum, and frequently present mini speeches during classroom sessions. For the fitness-based component, students will be physically challenged to improve their overall wellness through a goal-setting process. On Mondays, the class will follow the Couch to 5K program with the goal of running 3miles without stopping and continuously improving running time. It is expected that students will follow the program on their own as well, engaging in 2 extra runs during the week/weekend to be able to meet assessment criteria. On Wednesdays, the class will be introducted to various 30-50 minute workouts that will include: Tabata, core training, cardio circuits, yoga, pilates, strength training, total body workouts, and speed/power intervals. On Fridays, the class with engage in lifetime physical activities/sports with the expectation of being active for 40 continuous minutes.

The course culminates in a final composition project that will be performed in the music lab. This is an excellent course for those students who are interested in pursuing music as a career.

• Course Description: This course is for students who are interested in advanced choral singing. Students Choir students must be members of the concert choir ensemble. Repertoire includes show tunes, jazz, popular styles, and madrigals. Students are expected to have solid skills in music reading, vocal projection, blend, and choreography and will work to extend and refine these skills. Students are required to attend occasional after school rehearsals and all performances by the Show Choir.

• Course Description: This elective course will provide students with the opportunity to develop, conduct and present an original research project that will be entered into the Lancaster Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, students will compete in the Science Olympiad which requires participants to work cooperatively as a team to solve science related problems in a competitive atmosphere. Experimental design, measurement techniques, statistical analysis of data, literature research techniques, scientific writing and presentation will be covered. Students are required to participate in the Regional Science Olympiad and the Lancaster County Science Fair. The Science Olympiad is held on a Saturday in the month of March, and the science fair will require time outside of school to participate.

Students will analyze the effects of socialization, stratification, deviance and inequalities within a society. Various careers in the social services will be discussed throughout the course.

These skills and tools will be used to generate effective communication to a variety of audiences. A majority of the class time will be spent applying concepts learned in class through objective based projects. Additional topics include copyright law, careers and basic animation. This course is highly recommended for any student interested in communication, journalism, photography, music, digital video and advertising.

In addition to traditional printing methods, students will also explore upcoming technology including dye sublimation printing and laser engraving. Possible projects and activities include: pin-back buttons, laser engraved window ornaments, mouse pads, t-shirts, 3D building design, and audio/video presentations.

Technology & Society is designed to be fun and interesting. All areas of study will utilize hands-on activities and projects to further the learning process. Students will complete a variety of projects; such as parachute egg drop, rubber band powered airplane, acrylic dice, injection molded screwdrivers, secret compartment box and CO2 Dragster.

Language and cultural concepts will be presented to the students through the exploration of stories, mini-novels and articles from newspapers and magazines that increase in difficulty and utilize high-frequency vocabulary and grammar in French.
