Livestock sector has been making rapid strides and spectacular growth in recent time, with

positive impact on the lives of rural people mainly small farmers, marginal farmers and agricultural

landless laboures by raising their living standards considerably.

Gujarat State possesses a remarkable position in the country so far as livestock wealth and

development are concerned. There is a great need of data on livestock resources, production of

major Livestock product, category wise yield & estimate of inmilk and milch population and

management practices, so as to plan and implement the developmental activities in this field.

Integrated Sample Survey to estimate the production of major livestock products i.e. milk,

eggs and wool is carried out in the state as per the guidelines of Indian Agricultural Statistical

Research Institute (IASRI) New Delhi. It provides a reliable database relating to livestock products

and livestock population. The production of meat is estimated on the basis of animals slaughtered

in the registered slaughterhouses and the poultry meat is estimated on the basis of population of

broiler & layer birds. The information and the data available from this survey are used as base

figures to formulate development programmes of Animal Husbandry and Dairying sector in the

State.

I am happy to publish the 30th issue on estimates of major livestock products for the year

2012-13, Gujarat state, which contains useful data regarding livestock products viz. Milk, Eggs,

Wool & Meat.

I sincerely thanks to the farmers of the state, who have co-operated to the survey work by

providing correct information to the enumerators. Besides, I also congratulate to the staff engaged

in Integrated Sample Survey work for bringing out this publication in time.

It is hoped that this publication will prove useful and informative to all those who are

interested to enhance the economic activities of Animal Husbandry as well as the administrators,

Planners, policy makers, scientist , research workers and developers who are working in the field

of Animal Husbandry and allied sector.

Though extreme care has been taken in preparation of this report, yet possibility of some

errors cannot be ruled out. I would be glad to have the comments and suggestions of all users.

(8) Animal Husbandry

The Animal husbandry Sector plays an important and vital role in GSDP of Gujarat State, which is to the tune of nearly about 5.0%. This sector also contributes to product nutritive food, rich in animal protein, to the general public and good supplementary income to the economically weaker section of society like S.T., S.C., small farmers, marginal farmers and agricultural labourers. In addition, it offers a good employment generation opportunity, if adopted on a large commercial basis.

Bullocks are the main source of draught power in agricultural operations and transport of agricultural products to the nearby markets. This is likely to remain so for a long period to come. In addition, cattle, camels and donkeys are other important & effective draught animals and it is estimated that the draught animal power from livestock caters to more than 80% of the total mofussil motive power requirement of the state. A large number of rural women find good opportunities to work in several operations of livestock production. Moreover, the agricultural production programme gets valuable organic manure provided by the livestock. Around 80% of the dung is utilized for manure. It is also useful for biogas production, which is a good source of non-conventional energy for domestic cooking and lighting. Contribution of livestock products towards the State income is really remarkable and consistently increasing year after year. Average contribution of livestock towards Gross State Domestic Products (GSDP) is nearly about 5.0% of total GSDP. This shows that livestock plays an important and valuable role in the growth and development of the state.

Gujarat is lucky to have good and high-yielding breeds of cattle and buffaloes. Gir and Kankrej breeds of cows and Mahesani, Jafarabadi, Banni and Surti breeds of buffaloes are well known for their high milk yielding capacity. Kankrej bullocks are famous for their "Sawai-chal" and the cows of this breed are good milk producers. Marwadi and Patanwadi breeds of sheep of Gujarat are good wool producers. Four breeds of goats, viz. Kachchhi, Zalawadi, Mahesani and Surti, are good for mutton as well as milk production. The saurashtra area of the state is the homeland for famous "Kathiawadi" breed of horses, well known for its strength, swiftness, alertness, faithfulness and “Rewal" gati which is a special feature, allowing the rider to be comfortable while riding long distances.

Brief of Integrated Sample Survey Scheme

Introduction

Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) to estimate the seasonal & the annual production of major livestock products i.e. milk, eggs and wool is being conducted since 1977-78, which has been further, strengthened to estimate district level production since 1983-84. Object

The government implements various development programmes in the livestock sector through the Department of Animal Husbandry envisaging both qualitative and quantitative improvement in the sector. This survey helps the government to formulate scheme, planning & processing. Objective of the survey:-

(1) To estimate season wise & annual milk, egg & wool Production. (2) To workout average population & yield estimates. (3) To estimate dung production. (4) To work out average feed & fodder consumption. (5) To study trend of population, yield & production

Coverage The survey has been conducted in 20 % sample villages covering all the 26 districts

of the state.

Period of field work

The data for the survey were collected during all the three seasons, the field work of the survey commences on the first day of the march every year and comes to an end on the last day of February of the next year.

(1) Summer season -- March to June (2) Rainy season -- July to October (3) Winter season --- November to February

Sampling design

In first stage, list of all villages is framed out, and in second stage, listing of all households in the village is carried out. Sample of 20 % villages is selected every year without replacement so as to cover all 100 % villages within five years. Village & household selection has been done through random selection method.

(A) For first stage selection: -

Every year to select 20 % sample villages in each district, in the first stage, the talukas are considered as strata for each district and 20 % number (1/5 of total No. Of villages) of villages is allocated to each taluka in proportion of total number of villages in that taluka. The allotted number of villages are selected from each taluka by random and 1/3rd villages are surveyed in each season. Out of which 10-15 villages in each district are surveyed for detailed management. They are selected keeping in view the presentation of all talukas, For these villages, detailed management study is conducted for selected

households and such households are randomly selected as second stage units as explained in (B) below.

(B) For second stage selection: -

For second stage selection of households total number of households is enlisted in the selected village. In each season round wise households are selected at random as below. The ultimate sampling unit is animals in selected household.

When improved layer farms, mostly located in developed area, run by private organization to earn more benefit. Improved poultry farms are quick and cash unit which attract people to join this business. Improved layer gives at least 280 to 300 eggs per year. The poultry farms for egg production are run in scientific way by deep litter as well as cage system of housing facilities with cooling & mechanical ventilation system. Number of layers per unit range from 5000 to 50000.
