Thank YouThe Owens Community College Foundation and Honors Program wish to acknowledge Owens faculty and staff for their generous contributions to the Honors Program. We also would like to thank James and Marsha Geers for their continued support of the program.

Please join us in recognizing Art and Connie Smith for establishing an endowed scholarship for students in the Honors Program. Their generosity has provided financial assistance to 19Honors students since 2010.

The Owens Foundation is able to offer additional scholarships to Honors students through the Mike and Carol Bower and Regina and Harry Silletti operating scholarship funds. The support from these families has significantly lessened the financial obligation of 23 additional students in the Honors Program since 2013.

Thank you to all the donors who support the Honors Program and Honors Students at Owens Community College!

WHERE TRUTH LIES: A panel of individual research efforts focused on the participants’ major areas of studies and using a variety of ethical approaches to analyze the effects of lies and truth.

Honors Faculty: Dr. Catherine Pratt, Humanities

Panel Presenters: JESSEY RICHMOND SEFAH BOAKYE, Business Administration

“The Ethics of Business Finance”

The financial industry provides a lot of front page news in the business world – not all of it good news. Many argue business tolerates or embraces a less than ethical approach, e.g., Enron. It is hard to estimate the dollar cost of demanding higher ethical standards in the financial industry. This project looks at whether the short-term costs are worth the long-term positive impact on the economy at large.

CAROLYN GARZ A, Medical Imaging Technology

“Kohlberg, the Hippocratic Oath, and Physician/Patient Lies”

Is it ever ethical for physicians to lie to their patients? Does the Hippocratic Oath provide an answer? This project uses Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development to consider the possible ethical justification of lies told to patients by physicians. It looks at whether Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development can offer insight into this ethical issue.

CASSIE SULLIVAN, AS General Concentration

“Lies and Journalism: Soft Boundaries and Hard Issues”

Journalism is often called “The Fourth Estate,” referring to its role acting as a check on the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. The public’s estimation of journalism’s value to our democracy is inherently linked to the public trust in the industry. This project looks at the issues of truth, truthfulness and lies as these concepts apply to journalism.

BRIT TANY WALCZ AK, Entrepreneurship

“Do Anything to Get Ahead”

Some people cringe when their say the word “business.” Do the pressures of maintaining shareholder support and expected profit margins encourage an atmosphere of lying to increase market share or avoid a public relations disaster? What if a lie saves thousands of jobs? What if a lie helps American companies gain a competitive advantage over foreign companies? When, if ever, is it OK to lie in business?
