Welcome back to everybody. I do hope you enjoyed your half term break. Congratulations to all those who visited America, France and Spain. I had excellent reports from the staff who accompanied them. I am sure you enjoyed the opportunities and experiences that visiting other countries can offer you. Half term saw us host a visit from a link school in Germany which has been working on an Art exchange. Thanks to Mrs Eddy and the Art Department and Mrs Christ for their help with entertaining the students. On Thursday evening, we held our GCSE Prizegiving ceremony, where we celebrated the achievements and prizes awarded to our 2012 Year 11 students. Although I could not attend, I was pleased to hear how many families were able to join us and celebrate with such a fantastic year group. We are currently trialling a new one-way traffic system after school this half term in order to speed up the entry and exit to and from the main entrance, as well as ensure pedestrian safety. The attached map, on the next page, shows quite simply that we have created a road access to the tennis courts where cars can park, a widening to a road standard to the front of the pavilion for cars to pass through and then a single route of exit. Whilst in operation other car parks will have barriers to prevent access and enforce the one way system. This means that students should ONLY walk along the pedestrian pathway and not across the drive. The only exception to this is for students crossing near the Art Department building, to go through the side gate onto the tennis courts. No one should cross on the roundabout at all. Not even to go down to Music or the lane. No one is to be picked up on the roundabout, apart from students who get a bus from there. The only waiting area is by the pavilion. All cars leaving before 4.15 should join the one way system. Thank you for your support. Welcome back to everybody. I do hope you enjoyed your half term break.

Congratulations to all those who visited America, France and Spain. I had excellent

reports from the staff who accompanied them. I am sure you enjoyed the

opportunities and experiences that visiting other countries can offer you.

Half term saw us host a visit from a link school in Germany which has been working on

an Art exchange. Thanks to Mrs Eddy and the Art Department and Mrs Christ for their

help with entertaining the students.

On Thursday evening, we held our GCSE Prizegiving ceremony, where we celebrated

the achievements and prizes awarded to our 2012 Year 11 students. Although I could

not attend, I was pleased to hear how many families were able to join us and celebrate

with such a fantastic year group.

We are currently trialling a new one-way traffic system after school this half term in

order to speed up the entry and exit to and from the main entrance, as well as ensure

pedestrian safety.

The attached map, on the next page, shows quite simply that we have created a road

access to the tennis courts where cars can park, a widening to a road standard to the

front of the pavilion for cars to pass through and then a single route of exit. Whilst in

operation other car parks will have barriers to prevent access and enforce the one way

system.

This means that students should ONLY walk along the pedestrian pathway and not

across the drive. The only exception to this is for students crossing near the Art

Department building, to go through the side gate onto the tennis courts.

No one should cross on the roundabout at all. Not even to go down to Music or the

lane.

No one is to be picked up on the roundabout, apart from students who get a bus from there.

The only waiting area is by the pavilion.

All cars leaving before 4.15 should join the one way system.

Thank you for your support.

On 29th November, the Senior Choir is performing with the Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir at the WCMD.

We are very excited to announce that Howell’s School and John Lewis have teamed up for an evening of festive treats.

floor for Howell’s students, families, Hywelians, Governors and friends.

One of the 150th Birthday presents to the school is the fabulous new gates to the Junior School. The photograph below

shows how impressive they are. The current Year 5s in our Junior School, who helped design them, should be very proud.

Tomorrow is a very busy day for Howell’s as we are having an Open Day for all from 10am and a Taster Day for Year 6 and

Year 11, as well as showcase lessons and a visit from some of our Hywelians. I look forward to welcoming our students to

any events they are involved in, including supporting the school as ambassadors. Why not join us yourself for a Vintage

Tea and tour of the school?

Next Thursday is our Scholarship examination for College entry 2013. Please make sure your daughter in Year 11 has

registered her interest if she wishes to take this examination.

Finally, next Friday we will be celebrating Children in Need by organising a number of stalls at lunchtime and inviting

students (and staff!) to dress in their pyjamas for the day in exchange for a donation to Pudsey. I am sure it will be a

colourful and fun day.

Howell’s Riding Team

Sunday 4th November saw Howell's first riding event of the year for our newly formed riding team. This took the form of a show jumping competition organised by the National Schools Equestrian Association at King's Equestrian Centre in Bromyard.

Despite the mud and the rain this was a fun event, where the organisers did everything possible to put the riders at their ease, including jumping to rock music and supplying copious amounts of burgers and chips! Well done to Louise (Y7) who completed the 2" course with 8 faults and the 2'6" course with just 4 faults (one pole down) with under 38 seconds in the timed section. The next event is in December.

Elin’s Sponsored Walk

Congratulations to Elin S, Year 8, who completed a five mile sponsored walk for Kids Cancer Charity, a local charity who help and support lots of families affected by cancer in the Cardiff area.

The charity is trying to raise enough funds to buy a holiday home so families can enjoy quality time together. Elin raised £38.33 for the charity.

Thank you to all the staff and students who supported her – especially the kind girls who gave their last 50p!

History and Politics Visit to the USA

At half-term, thirty-two College students visited New York, Philadelphia and Washington with the History and Politics Department.

The New York itinerary included the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Wall Street and the World Trade Centre in addition to Central Park, Fifth Avenue, the Rockerfeller Centre and Times Square. Particular New York highlights were a guided tour of the United Nations building, a talk from Civil Rights veteran, Yvonne Hilton, at Columbia University and the Broadway musical ‘Newsies’ about the newsboys’ strike of 1899.

After visiting the Constitution Centre and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the students went on to Washington to visit Capitol Hill and the National Archives, key memorials such as those to the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the Lincoln Memorial where the ‘I have a dream’ speech was delivered, Arlington National Cemetery and the Air and Space, American History and Holocaust Museums.

History and Politics Visit to the USA (Continued)

There was even time for some shopping at Pentagon City before the flight home. It was a very busy and successful trip, made particularly enjoyable for the staff by the excellent behaviour and attitude of the students. It was completed just before Superstorm Sandy struck, much to the relief of both staff and parents!

Year 11 and 12 Entrepreneurs (Continued)

College students have been busy raising their profiles for their personal statements by carrying out work experience over this half term.

Abi M reports:

In October half term, I spent a week in a Primary School in Fairwater where I was stationed in a classroom with children of ages 5-7 and was able to observe teaching techniques used by the teacher. This week was very beneficial to me as I was able to reconfirm my passion for working with children and guiding them in the classroom. I am thoroughly looking forward to developing my skills in university to achieve my aspirations as a teacher.

Meanwhile, Petra B reports:

I was at Cardiff Dogs’ Home where I cleaned the kennels, filled the water bowls, squeegeed the floors, fed and walked the dogs. I also watched the vet neuter 8 dogs and saw a few general check-ups. I really enjoyed being part of the team at Cardiff Dogs’ Home especially as I was allowed to go with the dog warden on a house check for a possible new owner. I used skills like teamwork, communication, prioritising tasks and had to be patient when dealing with the dogs who were let out into a freshly cleaned kennel who then went straight to the toilet!

The Year 9 and 10 players played in the first round of the Schools Tournament just before half term. They played Ysgol Glantaf and Ysgol Plasmawr in two very competitive games.

Despite determined play by the Howell’s team, the experience of Glantaf helped them to win the game by three goals to nil. The match against Ysgol Plasmawr was lost narrowly by two goals to one. The Howell’s goal was scored by mid field player, Louisa K.

Well done to the Year 8, 9 and 10 players who played in this tournament.
