Shepherd’s Sharing News: Renew My Church The work of the

Grouping Discernment Teams from the parishes of the “Pulaski Corridor” is drawing to a close. Last Monday, we met at St. Terrence. After our previous meeting, one representative from each parish’s team gathered to form our “writing team.” The writing team’s task was to compile all the feedback we had surfaced in our discussions, from parish meetings, and from the online survey. A draft of that summary was presented and discussed at Monday’s meeting. The members of the writing team, including our representative, Fran LaBella, were rightly praised for capturing not only the facts of our discussions but also the spirit of our parishes. The document was a clear, concise, and coherent summary of the pros and cons of each scenario along the lines of the “foundational principles” that the Archdiocese had established as a criterion for the process. Last Monday’s discussion focused on what the teams wanted to affirm, change or add. This coming Monday, the Grouping Teams will hold their last scheduled meeting at Our Lady of Loretto to finalize the report. This is the report that will be presented to the Archdiocese’s Renew My Church Commission in early June and ultimately to Cardinal Cupich. I want to express my profound gratitude to the members of our parish’s grouping team, Jim Antos, Peg Donnelly, Tom Hamilton, Fran LaBella, and Dan McGrath for their dedication, insights, and hard work in what has been, at times, an emotionally difficult process. Admittedly, the teams from the other parishes also contributed to the process and the “Pulaski Corridor” can be grateful to them as well. I also want to thank all those who participated in the parish meetings and online survey. But most of all I want to thank all those who have been praying for our teams and the process. Please continue to do so. It’s not over yet.

What happens next is that the Cardinal will announce his decision in the fall for whatever restructuring will take place. According to Church law, any decision regarding the change of a parish’s status requires the approval of the Presbyteral Council (the representative body of all Archdiocesan priests). The decision will most likely take effect at the beginning of the subsequent fiscal year on July 1, 2019. Even then, the process is not over, so keep praying. It will take time for changes to be implemented, for new structures and organizations to be established and the shifting and combining of human and capital resources.

Only as these new configurations take shape does the real work of Renew My Church begin. The whole purpose of this process is not about renewing the structure of our Archdiocesan parishes. It was not about rebuilding the structure of San Damiano church when St. Francis first heard Jesus tell him to “Renew My Church.” A renewed structure is not the end, but the

means to accomplish the true renewal of Christ’s Body, the Church. The structures are there to support the three-fold mission: make disciples, build communities, and inspire witness. So keep praying. This won’t be really over until Our Lord comes again.

News: Home Front Whatever the future may bring, it is important that we, as a parish, enter into it with as much vitality as we can muster. The parish meetings that we have held during this process have alerted us to the challenges we face as a parish and school community. To meet these challenges, all of us will have to work together. We have begun a number of initiatives to increase our school enrollment and improve our parish revenue. I’d like to point out two of these new initiatives and an old standby. First, we have just begun conducting a “Queen of Hearts” raffle. Participation in it benefits our parish. Secondly, plans are underway to hold a carnival this summer. This will require an army of volunteers to make it happen. Our old standby, the Manna program raises money at no additional cost to participants. It’s simple, really. You buy a “gift card” for the merchants you shop with and what you paid for it is exactly what you spend at that merchant. The merchants themselves provide our parish with a percentage of the gift cards sold. In this way, we get “corporate America” to fund our ministry. Manna cards are available for many local businesses and are sold after most of the Sunday Masses and during the week at the school office. Anyone who eats, wears clothes, buys gas, etc. can participate. Another challenge is to increase our weekend Mass attendance. I’m sure that we all know people who once attended Mass with us but no longer do. They have their reasons for not attending, but if you get the chance to talk with them, after listening to why they don’t come, let them know why you DO come, why your membership and participation in our parish family is important to you.

News: People This week, our music minister, Terri Lenz, informed me that she had accepted an offer to replace a retiring music director at another parish. Her last day with us will be Sunday, June 3rd. We are grateful for her nearly five years of service to our parish and wish her well in her new position. I will be forming a “search committee” to assist me in hiring a new music minister.

Commentary: Follow God’s Lead Our first reading has Peter “playing catch-up” with the Holy Spirit that had descended upon the Gentiles in house of Cor-nelius even before he (Peter) could get to the water of Baptism. Then, when Jesus commands His disciples to “love one another,” it is in the context of the love He has shown for them. That love begins in the small intimate group of Jewish disciples, but must extend beyond divi-sions just as God does.

A Prayer For “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church.

Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly, to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously, to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace.

We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

Alumni Update Jack Zampillo - Class of 2014 I am a senior at Brother Rice High School and will be attending Western Michigan University in the fall. This past year was my 6th year being a part of Passion Play and I can honestly say it has been one of the best experiences of my life. Growing up, I always looked forward to the Passion Play. In 8th grade, I was selected to be Jesus and I was absolutely stoked. It was an amazing experience and I felt like I was an important part of something. These last four years of being on the staff will be years I will never forget. I love seeing the smiles on the kids' faces before a show, and I love to see them have fun. Because in the end, that is what the play is all about. Portraying our Lord’s Passion, and having fun doing it!
