Scoring

Give yourself one point for each time you answered "A" for questions: 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21

Give yourself one point for each time you answered "B" for questions: 4 ,5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18.

What it means…

Add all points. Totals imply:• 0-4: strong left brain• 5-8: moderate left brain• 9-13: middle brain• 14-16: moderate right brain• 17-21: strong right brain

Page 11: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Description of the Right-Hemisphere Functions

• Alerts us to novelty; tells us when someone is lying or making a joke

• Specializes in understanding the whole picture• Specializes in music, art, visual-spatial and/or

visual-motor activities• Helps us form mental images when we read

and/or converse• Responsible for intuitive and emotional

responses.• Helps us to form and maintain relationships

Page 12: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Description of the Left-Hemisphere Functions

• Constantly monitors our sequential, ongoing behavior

• Responsible for awareness of time, sequence, details, and order

• Responsible for auditory receptive and verbal expressive strengths

• Specializes in words, logic, analytical thinking, reading, and writing

• Responsible for boundaries and knowing right from wrong

• Knows and respects rules and deadlines

Page 14: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Autonomic Nervous System• Part of the PNS

• Works with endocrine system in adjusting the body to compensate for internal/external changes

• ALL autonomic nerves are motor nerves▫Regulate the organs without conscious control▫Breathing movements and responsible in the

“fight or flight” response

• Motor somatic nerves: lead to muscle and are regulated by conscious control

Page 15: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Autonomic Nervous System

Made up of two distinct and often opposing units:

•Sympathetic nervous system: nerve cells that prepare the body for stress

•Parasympathetic nervous system: nerve cells that return the body to normal resting levels after adjustments to stress

Page 16: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Autonomic Nervous SystemSympathetic Nervous System Parasympathetic Nervous System

• Increases heart rate• Decreases peristalsis• Increases the release of

glucose• Dilates pupils• Relaxes sphincter • Increases blood flow• Causes the release of

epinephrine (adrenal gland)

• Decreases heart rate• Increases peristalsis• Stores glucose• Constricts pupils• Contracts sphincter • Decreases blood flow

Page 17: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Neurotransmitters

Sympathetic Nervous System•Acetylcholine and norepinephrine

Parasympathetic Nervous System•Only acetylcholine

Page 18: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Natural and Artificial PainkillersEndorphins and Enkephalins •Natural painkillers•Manufactured by the brain•Pain is interpreted by specialized cells in

the substantia gelatinosa (SG) found in grey matter in the spinal cord

•SG cells produce neurotransmitter than informs the organ of pain

•Endorphins/Enkephalins attach to receptor on SG cell and pain transmitter not produced pain is reduced

Page 19: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Opiates

• Heroin, codeine, and morphine

•Since they have a similar structure to endorphins, opiates occupy they same receptor sites work like endorphins and enkephalins

•Heroin and opium reduce pain and create a feeling of tranquility

Page 20: 9.4: Homeostasis and the Autonomic Nervous System

Opiates

•When artificial painkillers are used, it causes the body to produce less natural painkillers

•This creates a dependency on the drug

•Once the use of the drug stops, SG receptors become vacant, and pain transmitters are produced in abundance
