WORLD TRADE WEEK: Southern California – The Hub of Global Trade

The strategic location of Southern California as a global trade hub cannot be overstated. Handling more than $390 billion in two-way trade – whether through exporting agricultural, manufactured goods, medical equipment and high value-added products, or importing products for consumers or production lines – Southern California is key in linking global markets. It is this fact that makes the theme of the 91st Annual World Trade Week (WTW), “Southern California – The Hub of Global Trade,” so timely and appropriate.

World Trade Week has been a time-honored tradition in the Southern California business community for more than 90 years. I am honored to serve as chairman of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce World Trade Week in its 91st year.

The importance of WTW is demonstrated through a month-long celebration in May, which consists of many events that provide the opportunity for members of the business community to discuss and learn about the importance of international trade to the Southern California economy. The L.A. Area Chamber has been the leader in ensuring the success of this event for its entire history, which commences with the WTW Kickoff Breakfast that is scheduled for May 4, 2017.

There are many companies that depend on Southern California to support their global supply chains, resulting in a substantial positive economic impact to our local economy. In addition, these organizations have made significant capital investments in local infrastructure to our benefit to serve these global markets.

Southern California is also unique in relation to its world trading partners with the multitude and variety of transportation modes engaged in this trade. Whether through our local seaport or international airport, ranked No. 1 and No. 5 respectively in the United States, to the cluster of warehouses and distribution centers in the Inland Empire all connected by a local drayage community, our infrastructure ensures global goods move efficiently within our borders. Southern California is also the gateway to the most robust intercontinental rail infrastructure in the world for freight movement. We truly have it covered whether it moves by sea, water, air, land or the ever-expanding electronic highway. All of these businesses create in excess of 360,000 jobs in many different sectors of our local communities.

Since its initiation in 1927 by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce (LAACC), the World Trade Week celebration continues to highlight the tremendous business opportunities for U.S. companies that choose to go global and offer the trade community a collaborative platform to bring success in the global marketplace.

I am honored to be the new Secretary of Commerce, and I intend to bring what I have learned from the private sector to my job here in Washington, D.C. I am looking forward to having a stronger business relationship with organizations such as the LAACC, and I understand the important role it plays in fostering the entrepreneurial spirit to help drive innovation and increase American competitiveness.

Within the Depart of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, we have both U.S. and overseas international trade professionals who will concentrate on strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. businesses by offering up-to-date content on exporting, providing them the resources they need to support exporting, connecting them to the global demand for U.S. goods and services, and ensuring that our trade partners comply with their agreements. Our global business professionals work with U.S. businesses across the country and throughout the world in markets where U.S. companies can pursue real business opportunities. We coordinate our resources and services with organizations such as the LAACC, which innovates, partners with us, and is a valued resource for exporters in the Los Angeles area business community.

As we celebrate this year’s World Trade Week, we keep in mind that the United States must be strong and steadfast in leading innovation and remaining on the cutting edge of technology. Automation and e-commerce will help American firms be more competitive in today’s dynamic global markets. Our ability as a Nation of entrepreneurs and innovators will hinge on providing a level playing field so that U.S. firms can not only compete, but rely on fair trade rules.

As I go forward as Secretary of Commerce, one of my goals will be to better facilitate access to the Department’s resources and avail myself to organizations such as the LAACC to support the private sector’s job creation for American workers. Exporting American products and services helps create good jobs here at home, while helping to strengthen our economy.

The United States has many great organizations such as the LAACC and, through these organizations, events such as the 91st Annual World Trade Week Kickoff Breakfast help to generate a continued sense of purpose and direction for U.S. businesses. I congratulate the LAACC on its 91st World Trade Week, and I applaud its commitment to international trade.

The World Trade Week concept was conceived in 1926 and first observed in 1927 in Southern California. World trade continues to significantly contribute tothe nation’s economy and has developed a vast new horizon for America’s businesses.

In 1926, Stanley T. Olafson, then manager of the World Trade Department of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, conceived

the idea of a World Trade Week observance in Southern California. This was during a period of isolationism and under the conditions prevailing during the heyday of the restrictive Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act.

In 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt officially proclaimed World Trade Week as a national observance by the United States Government and selected the third weekof May each year, which includes May 22, National Maritime Day.

Initially, the purpose of World Trade Week was to promote the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Following World War II, the expanding economy and potential for international commerce growth created an opportunity for World Trade Week to expand its scope to include all facilities and organizations in the Southern California area involved in world trade.

Under the guidance of its founding sponsors — the L.A. Area Chamber, Los Angeles World Airports, the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles — the original week-long observance has now grown to more than 30 events held each year throughout the month of May in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura.

This tremendous nonprofit endeavor is further supported by Southern California companies who offer sponsorship for the many programs and informational materials the World Trade Week Committee creates each year.

SCHOLARSHIPSThe World Trade Week committee offers scholarships to aspiring Southern California high school and university students in international trade-related fields. The purpose of these scholarships is to foster international trade education and international business development. In establishing this scholarship program, the committee hopes to develop a network of international trade professionals who are willing to provide mentoring to students wanting to enter the field of international business.

At the university level, scholarships are awarded to full-time students who have completed or are in the process of completing at least a quarter or semester internship with an international business, organization or association of the Southern California international trade community.

GLOBAL TRADE CAREER BRIEFINGSThe World Trade Week committee hosts several educational briefings each year that are focused on informing high school students, educators and career counselors on career opportunities in fields related to international trade. Members of the committee also participate in regional university and high school career fairs.
