FROM THE PRINCIPAL 'S DESK
Dear MBS Families ,
Now that we are a few weeks into the school
year , students and teachers have settled into
routines . Teachers often invite me into their
classrooms to join lessons and activities with
students . This is one of my most favorite parts of
being principal at Malletts Bay School . I love to
be a part of learning and instruction alongside
students more than anything else !
This week , Mrs . Eastman , invited me to join part
of a fifth grade PE class . Currently in PE our 3rd-
5th graders are in the midst of a team building
unit . As part of the team building unit , students
are working together on a series of problem
solving challenges together . This particular
group of students was participating in a
challenge called “land mine .” As a team we had
to figure out together which “dot spots” we could
step on to make it through a challenge .
When it was my turn to make it through the land
mine , I was impressed with students ’
communication and collaboration skills and how
much they encouraged each other (and me !) as
we worked our way through the challenge .

SAFETY F I RST
During the first days of school teachers review saftey drills
with their students . As a school we will practice a "Clear the
Halls and Secure the Building" on September 17th . For these
first two drills in September , we will ensure that students
and families know about them ahead of time . As the school
year continues , we will continue to practice unannounced
drills at least once a month .
FROM THE PR INC I PAL
Doing this activity reminded me of my days as
a student in Colchester . I feel so fortunate to
be a graduate of this system for many
reasons . One of them is that I value the
experience I had as a student in PE . Our PE
program emphasizes so much more than
simply learning athletic and motor skills . In
physical education , students learn important
social skills , are exposed to a variety of
different sports , and learn to embrace a
lifelong fitness .
Over the course of the school year in PE MBS
students will have a chance to choreograph a
dance , play soccer , practice climbing on the
climbing wall , snowshoe and so much more !
Our PE teachers , Mrs . Eastman and Mr . Kluk
also work closley with their counterparts at
other schools , planning curriculum and this
time of year , organizing our district ski and
skate sale (see page 3)!
When you get a chance , ask your MBS student
what they learned in PE this week !
Respectfully ,

FROM NURSE JOS I E
Back to school unfortunately also
means the return of shared germs and
colds . In order to keep our students ,
teachers and staff healthy , we ask that
students stay home from school : 24
hours after a fever without the use of
fever reducing medication such as
Tylenol or Advil , 24 hours after any
vomiting or diarrhea , for red eyes that
are crusty or goopy , and for
undiagnosed rashes .
By keeping students home with these
contagious symptoms , we can reduce
the spread of illness in school . Feel free
to call me if you need help deciding
when your child should return after an
illness . Thanks for helping to keep MBS
healthy !
