Dear Parishiners,

This weekend, 119 lovely Padre Serra children join our faith community at the table of the Lord!They will receive Holy Eucharist for the very first time, carrying Jesus within themselves as theirnourishment through the days of the week. Sharing in the Eucharist at Mass is a lot like havingdinner with family at home. We recall memorable stories, give thanks, and share a nourishingmeal.

Mealtimes are great ways to stay connected with family and friends. In today’s Gospel, Jesusshares beautiful imagery: “I AM the vine, you are the branches.” He invites us to becomeconnected to Him and to remain permanently with Him. The First Communion children are thenew buds on Jesus’ vine, freshly developing their relationships with Jesus, while parents andfamily nurture their progress. All the preparation and practice has led to this wonderful day! Theboys and girls have attended centers, retreats and formation events. They have learned prayersand followed Jesus’ life in scripture. They have played games and created Catholic crafts. Theyhave worked as disciples in service of their small groups and the church. All of their activitieshave led them to recognizing the bread and wine as the body and blood of their Savior. When wecelebrate Eucharist together at Mass, Jesus gives us the grace of salvation over and over again.Jesus is the “true vine,” revealing God’s encompassing love for all of us. As branches, young orold, we cannot exist without the vine. The vine is a promise fulfilled of an abundant life with Godnow and in heaven. As extensions of a growing vine, we are able to “bear fruit” and becomesomething new. We are able to become His disciples, called in service of others.

The children and families have taken so many steps toward First Communion Day. As they reachthe altar today, I cannot help but remember my own First Communion. I barely recall the style ordetails of the dress I wore, but I remember how special it made me feel wearing it! I remember allmy family joining us at church and the celebration that followed. I remember the pretty cake mymother made and the perfect white rosary I received as a gift. Most of all, I remember thinking Idid not have to wait anymore! I held up my hands andreceived.

We receive Jesus in Holy Communion. We welcome Jesus intoour body and soul. Jesus wants to be close to us. May He abidein all of us, forever connected in a bond of love. God bless thechildren as they celebrate their First Communion today. Maywe all carry Jesus within us as if it was the very first time!

Teaching Touching SafetyTeaching children about their body parts is important for their safety.Parents begin by teaching young children about their fingers, toes,knees and nose when they are just a few months old. They shouldalso be taught the names of their private body parts. Children shouldknow the names a doctor would use and that their private body partsare “private” for a reason, that means “off limits” to almosteveryone. Finally, nobody has the right to touch or see private bodyparts except for the purpose of helping keep the child clean andhealthy. When we teach children about their bodies, they learn that itis okay to ask questions about it.
