Third Sunday of Advent www.padreserra.org Page Three

Dear Friends,

We celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent this weekend, and are exhorted repeatedly in the first reading1, theresponsorial psalm2, and the second reading3 to rejoice. For the first time this weekend, the third candle of theAdvent wreath is lit, and it’s pink instead of purple. The priest also has the option to wear pink vestments (someprefer to call the color “rose”). The pink color is also to be a sign of the rejoicing we are commanded to do. Youmay have heard this Sunday referred to as “Gaudete Sunday”. The translation of that Latin word is simply“rejoice”.

Yet rejoicing can seem a tall order, particularly at this time of year, for some of us. Images in the media and inour own imaginations include leisure time, harmonious families, warmth, plenty of money and food, the absenceof conflict, the presence of security, etc. These images, when contrasted with the realities we may beexperiencing, can create a pressure which is conducive to anything but rejoicing. Our schedules, houses, families and bank accounts may be quite different from what we think they should be.

So how can we obey this command, even if our faith is strong, given that none of us is exempt from worry andsuffering? To me this is a pivotal question for Christians at all times, but it’s perhaps more pointed in thisseason.

I think the answers lies in John the Baptist’s declaration in the Gospel: “there is one among you whom you donot recognize”.

Just a few weeks back, in the gospel story of Jesus, the Shepherd King, judging between the sheep and the goats,we heard how, at the end of time, we would question “when did we see you, Lord?” So where is the One amongus we do not recognize? In that same story, the Shepherd King tells us that when we took care of (or did not) themost humble, the most unimportant, the most unattractive among us, it was actually him.

So I believe we can rejoice because all we have to do is look for those around us in need of our kindness and ourcare, and we will have found Jesus, the one among us we had not recognized. I would add that none of us is aperfect sheep, nor a perfect goat. But we are to rejoice, and not worry, because as St. Paul’s letter to theThessalonians says, “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it”. How can we know thatwe have been called? If we had not been called, we would not care. Yet we are here, trying to find meaning forour lives, and building the Kingdom, imperfectly, but joyfully, together.

Siempre Adelante!

Christian Initiation MattersAdvent and the Initiation ProcessAdvent is an especially meaningful season for those who arepreparing to join the Catholic Church. They catch the spirit of joyfulanticipation as they worship with us on Sundays and reflect upon thescriptures during the week. They learn about the Catholic way ofpreparing for Christmas by attending parish-sponsored events andparticipating in works of charity. This Advent our inquirers, candidates and catechumens are participating in the “Adopt-a-Family” program. As a group they are providing Christmas gifts, necessities and food for a needy family of six. God bless them everyone!

If you or anyone you know is interested in finding out more aboutthe Catholic Church or about the initiation process, please contactCatherine Shadduck, Coordinator of Initiation, [email protected] or call 482-6417 ext. 331.

Celebrating Advent: Make Room for Jesus

(part 4 of 4)There are countless customs and symbols, some centuries oldthat help us celebrate Advent with joy, patience andexpectation. They help to remind us that Jesus is the source oflife. He loves us and yearns to dwell within our hearts. The Nativity Scene conveys an inspiring message of the birth ofJesus 2000 years ago. It also symbolizes Jesus’living presence with us righthere and now. The nativityscene is the first part of theearth to touch the infant, whoredeems us and makes us aNew Creation. Thenativity scene helps usrediscover the excitement andjoy of the birth of Jesus as presented in thegospel accounts of Matthew and Luke. Both writers want us toknow that the Child is the Son of God. The infant is announcedby the angels, conceived by the Holy Spirit, visited by theshepherds and the magi, and given the name Jesus, whichmeans “God saves.” Ironically, the first people to hear the GoodNews of Christmas were the shepherds. They were leading theirflocks and typically were on the margins of society. Theyusually were the last to be told anything. The vivid lesson welearn from the shepherds is that the Good News is for allpeople, not just for the privileged. It was in the Middle Agesthat the nativity scene grew in popularity. It became even morepopular through the work of St. Francis of Assisi in 1224 whenhe used real-life representation of key figures and animals tocreate a dramatic sense of God’s humble entrance into humanhistory. Eventually, the nativity scene with figurines, found itsway into churches and homes of all religious denominations.
