Core Truths for the Christian Life

Session 6BSalvation:

The Atonement

God wants all to be saved

1 Timothy 2 (3) This is good, and pleases God our Savior, (4) who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

2 Peter 3 (9) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

God calls people through the gospel2 Thessalonians 2 (13) But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. (14) He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God saves those who place faith in ChristEphesians 2 (8) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- (9) not by works, so that no one can boast.

Galatians 3 (26) You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

John 3 (16) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (36) Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."

God gives a spiritual rebirth to those who receive His word and turn to ChristJames 1 (18) He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

1 Peter 1 (23) For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

God foreknew that some would place faith in Christ and He chose them to be His own people

1 Peter 1 (1) Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, (2) who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

God predestined those He foreknew would trust in Christ to be transformed to the very image of ChristRomans 8 (28) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (29) For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

God wants His people to feel secure and to persevere in the faith1 John 5 (11) And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (12) He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (13) I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Hebrews 3 (14) We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

Jude 1 (24) To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy-- (25) to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!

God seals as His own possession those who place faith in ChristEphesians 1 (13) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, (14) who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

2 Corinthians 1 (21) Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, (22) set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
