From the TreasurerFrom the TreasurerFrom the TreasurerFrom the Treasurer———— March was the best month financially so far this year. Income was better overall than the amount that we had budgeted and expenses were almost right on budget. With the help from the Foundation the YTD shortfall was actually ($15,057). The council and I, and Pastor Sparby and the staff have been working hard to inform the congregation of the needs of the church financially and we are grateful that this message has been heard and the congregation has responded.

As I write this report Easter Sunday has passed and spring is fighting to take hold. We will be heading into the busy time of summer and I’d like to remind the congregation that there are several ways to make giving consistent every month. There is Simply Giving, and giving can be set up monthly or weekly on credit cards. Please consider one of these options. God is working through all of us at Edison Park Lutheran Church. We are helping people that have been effected by dis-asters, we are feeding the hungry and those less fortunate than we are. It is uplifting to see the generosity of this congre-gation. I hope spring comes soon and everyone has a blessed summer.

Thank you to the following people who are willing to serve on the Council this year: Wayne Ammentorp, Armando Ar-riazola, Kevin Burkum, Werner Calder, John Cherry, Vicki Evers, John Jackson and Mark Schaeffer. The Council is pursu-ing several projects. The Property Committee is evaluating the floors in the North and South Halls as well as the Men’s Restroom on the lower level. We are also working on an emergency action plan. Our biggest challenge is working with Day 8 Strategies to form a new vision for EPLC in it’s 90th year and beyond. We are also considering a new pictorial di-rectory—it has been several years since the last one. If you are willing to be a part of any of these projects please let one of the council members know, or talk to Pastor Sparby or myself. Thank you.

“THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BAD WEATHER, ONLY DIFFERENT KINDS OF GOOD WEATHER.”

JOHN RUSKIN

For all of us who have just endured perhaps the worst “Spring” weather of our lifetimes, we may strongly disagree with the above quote. Who doesn’t love snow-storms lasting into mid-April? Soon enough, we will for-get this weather all too quickly and move on to com-plaining about how hot it is outside. We humans are an odd lot. We never seem to be satisfied with what we have, and yet God provides for us what we need. He provides beauty in the form of snowflakes, even if we feel we’ve had enough of them to last us for quite some time. Remember to look for the beauty in the weather that is here, and in all that surrounds us. It is okay for us to want more or better, but be mindful that what we have is often more than enough. Too often these days, we want to complain about a situation rather than ac-cept the beautiful reality of it. The warm weather is com-ing. I promise. Be happy when it arrives.

Since 1965, the Edison Park Lutheran Foundation and its members have happily accepted donations to help sustain the life of Edison Park Lutheran Church. Since it was established, over $2,000.000 have been gifted to EPLC to sustain and grow its ministry. While there have been significant donations made throughout the history of the Foundation, EVERY gift matters. For those who wish to help us in our quest to continue to build the Foundation please contact a Foundation Director or the Church office.

Please ask a Foundation Director if you would like to

know more. Directors are: Dale Ammentorp, Joe Bartel,

Barry Bleeker, Mark Dupke, Gary Duszak, Kurt Gustafson,

Monika Hemm, Rick Janci, Wayne Oberschelp, Paul Spe-

cialle, and Alice Rybak..

Deacon Carole EdwardsDeacon Carole EdwardsDeacon Carole EdwardsDeacon Carole Edwards One of our members contacted me recently about doing a “Kindness Project.” A friend of his had died, and instead of a having a memorial service, the person requested that people do an “act of kindness.” So our EPLC member decided to use his love of cooking as a way to honor his friend’s memory, and help out someone in need. He’s been making soup, beef stew, and other meals for us to take to our shut-ins, and has committed to doing this for a year. He told me “I’m glad this can be something to help people.” I was touched by his spirit of kindness, and thought what a difference this will make in the life of someone in need. We have another member who saves their leftovers from home cooked meals and restaurants and gives them to someone who can’t afford to buy food. A simple act of kindness with a huge impact on another’s life. Never underestimate the ways you can be the hands and feet of Christ to the people around you.

Youth and Family MinistryYouth and Family MinistryYouth and Family MinistryYouth and Family Ministry A Message from the Youth DirectorA Message from the Youth DirectorA Message from the Youth DirectorA Message from the Youth Director Greetings, I couldn’t tell from the weather, but we ARE actually in Spring. The prolonged frigid temps were not a good indi-cator, but I can tell the season has changed because our Confirmation Class meetings will be coming to an end. Yes, our 8th grade confirmands will be taking their next BIG step in their faith journey and getting confirmed on Sunday May 20th at the 10:30 am service. Please join us if you are able and help make their special day even brighter. I’ve had so much fun getting to know these kids, it has been my pleasure to teach them. My only goal was to assist in strengthening their relationship with our Lord. They’ve worked really hard as we have covered a lot of ground in the past year, including some fun adven-tures along the way. I’ll miss seeing them on Wednes-days but I’ll be praying to see them on Sundays. Also, I’m in the process of putting together some youth programs for the kids to stay involved with our church throughout the Summer and into Fall. For example, we’ll be offering a Cooking with Christ session in May. During this session, we’ll teach the kids how to bake healthy ba-gels and then donate the bagels we make to the New Hope Food Shelter. I really like the idea of the kids learn-ing a new skill and giving back to the community at the same time. If you would like to pass down a skill or hob-by to our congregation’s children like sewing, painting ,wood crafts, cooking, etc., please contact myself and I would love to put something together with you. Perhaps we can do an act of kindness in the process. Together we can keep these kids involved in our church, please consider giving your time in hopes of creating lifelong memories for our youth. God Bless You All! Yours In Christ, Phil Mauro, Youth & Family Ministry Director

EPLC has been asked to consider supporting the ELCA program for chaplains. The Veteran’s Task Force is moving forward and hopes to raise at least $1,000 by Memorial Day Weekend. This may become an annual emphasis. There is currently a great need for chaplain support in the armed services. If you would like to help, simply mark your gift “Chaplains.”“Chaplains.”“Chaplains.”“Chaplains.”

We hope that you join us for our June selection of A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Follow the restricted life of the wealthy Count Alexander Rostov who lives in,

but cannot leave, the famous Metropol hotel in Moscow. He is under house arrest for writing a poem that did not flatter the Bolsheviks. He meets Nina, a young girl who will change his life. What adven-tures and achievements this cultured man experiences at the Metropol!

July finds us discussing a modern classic - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Life was not easy for

Francie Nolan growing up in the years just before and during WW1 in Brooklyn. Her alcoholic father

worked intermittently as a singing waiter and her mother cleaned tenement apartments but they read

from the Bible or Shakespeare every evening. Her father encouraged Francie to dream big-- her mother

taught her that dreams are fine as long as you keep one foot on the ground. Come and meet Francie!

The Promise—During the Thirty Years War the deadly plague raged throughout Europe, until in 1633 it reached even the tiny Alpine village of Oberammergau. During the next six months, so many villages died of the Black Death, that the townspeople took a solemn Vow—if God would release them from the plague, they would perform once every ten years the story of the Passion of Christ. From the moment the Vow was taken, no one else in the village succumbed to the plague and so the first Passion Play was performed in 1634. Our group would be among those in a hotel just two blocks from the performance.
