Example 2 Jayda went to the store with a twenty
dollar bill. She bought a loaf of bread and a half-gallon of milk. The clerk gave her $15.17 in change. How much money did Jayda spend on bread and milk?
20.00 – m = 15.17 Or
15.17 + m = 20.00
Example 3 Brittney hiked to the summit of Mt. Whitney,
which began from the upper trailhead at 8365 ft. The elevation of Mt. Whitney’s summit is 14,496 ft. What was Brittney’s elevation gain from the trailhead to the summit?
14496 – 8365 = gOr
8365 + g = 14496
Example 4 Cody learned in his US History class that
President John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960 at the age of 43. In what year was he born.
1960 – 43 = aOr
1960 – a = 43
