rific race possible. With candy and ilowers, one in six entrants receives an award. What a race! Top notch competition, plentiful awards, and a party at January's on Sunday morning.
~ For the last two years -our flowers have - been provided by a home-town success
Kroger-the largest retail florist in the U.S. Sally Erler, the flor~ manager of the new Forest Park super store gave us home-town service. Upcoming Programs
As most of you mow, CTC elections will be held at the April meeting. In the past, we usually just sat around and
-talked while the votes were being t;illied. This year, we will have a program about
- the various Biking/Running trails that have been proposed for the Cincinnati area. Jim Espey, a local Biking/Running trail advocate, will be our featured speaker. Several club members who have heard Jim speak at other meetings have been very impressed with his knowledge on the subject. I think you'll be interested and impressed as well.
The May program- will =reprise a popular program we tried several years ago- a Race Volunteer's Clinic. We will present three hands-on demonstrations of different areas of race organization; you pick the two you would like to attend: Race Day & Pre-Registration, "Finish Line (set up & operation) and Results Tabulation. -
Many of us compete in and volunteer

Newcomer Andrew Shephard shook hands with Mark Helgeson at the start of the race, ana the two quickly made the race look like it was started in two heats. After three miles, the two were out of sight of everyone else in the race.

Next Month: Due to budgetary constraints, this
issue of the newsletter was limited to 12pages.
A crackerjack team of literary experts is already hard at work to solve the problem.
Unfortunately, there were numerous articles, race flyers, and race re~ults that did ·· not get in this issue because of space limitations.
To those of you who contributed, rest assured - the matter is being taken care of by Top People.

President's Message
There isn't a month that goes by when we don't' see SOJ!lething abOut Clair Brock. This past e month she was featured in an Enquirer Extra article - for the second time! There is ample justification for all of this publicity, though. Clair ran the GasparQlo Distance Classic with a timecof 1:04:40 (a PR) to finish 2nd in her age group. Spe ran the Red Lobster Run in 43:27 to~fmish 1st in her age group. At an age where most people are winding down, Clair keeps getting stronger and stronger.
I am proposing that the Valentine's Day Run be renamed the Valentine's Day Classic. Jane and Norm Taylor did a superb job this year and even managed to provide beautiful weather. This is a race that is devoted to the 'running can be fun' school of thought; if you didn't participate this year, be sure to make jt to next year's. By the way, thanks again to Poppy Evans for the sliirt design - I think it was one of the best yet.
The Blue Ash Marathon (and halt) is almost here. Kriste seems to have everything m order, but if you're not running, be sure to volunteer since a race of this size needs alot of help. Kriste somehow manages-to make this a fun event for the volunteers as well as the participants.
Bobbi Montgomery has been hard at work on ihe Memorial Day Race. She is incorporating the Bi-Centennial theme into this year's race which will give a different slant to the costumes. The race is preceeded by a Club race and picnic the night before giving -everyone a chance to run in at least one event. The picnic is pot-luck with the Club picking up the tab for the meat and beverages. Be -sure to not miss this-one!
Good luck to all of you at the Mini!

Upeoming Races, Etc.
LIFESTYLES OF THE FAST AND FURIOUS- The third annual Wesley Drive Brunch was a heartwarmer for the
residents. Forty-two runners showed. Only one cancellation - SOGGY NIKE.
And for the third time, the star(s) of the brunch wet:e none other than the GENERIC RUNNING CLUB. Mel Baute et ailed a scorcher of a nine-mile~
run for the strong-of-heart. EEK said he could at least have stopped to look at the river. To show the depth of the GENERICS, Ron Crawford had run 11 miles earlier in the day so he volunteered to lead the shorter runs which were two 5-K's back to back (at the halfway mark you were back to base). On IIlost bicycle runs, they have this animal- that swags from back to front to check on everybody. Ron did this on the lOK course. SHEW! Hats off to Bob Wahlke and Sue Barrett for knowing the area and fmdlng their own way back. c I lived on Wesley Drive for two months before I was sure of where I lived. Thanks t-0 all who showed.
UPCOMING RACES- In addition to our BLUE ASH MARATHON & ~F MARATHON there are a couple of shorter runs worth noting in our area during April. -
MIAMI UNIVERSITY RED _BRICK RUN. 4/10/88, 5k, 8TH ANNUAL. advantages; The Red Brick Run is a beautiful course which winds through the Miami campus. The race has a professional touch with good water stops, start and fmish at the gym and unique awards. The drive to and fr-Om Oxford is scenic via Rt. 27. - A few minor hiUs on the course make_ it interesting. $3.00 entry fee. DISADVANTAGES; In previous years when this Sunday has been one of those unusually warm and sunny days, the students of Miami University have taken to sunbathing. Their bleached, oiled, scantily clad bodies with swimwear right out of SI cause considerable distraction and male runners may-be forced to stop completely and ogle. Stopping and ogling is detrimental if you are running for any kind of time.
POLICE VICTORY RUN. 4/24/88 5K &15K
ADVANTAGES; Maybe the most scenic and certainly the best protected course in town. The 5K course starts right at Millcrest Park and heads south on Victory Parkway and then back. A nice grade going out and the same grade going down coming back. The 15K is out Victory and into the hiUs of Eden Park and surrounding area. The lawmen
are constantly making thisc a better race. This year the splits are ~ supposed to be corrected by the famous Spiller and=_ Dick Team. It's surprising what great hosts the cops are when they're allOwed to be human. Way to go guys.
DISADVANTAGES; In previous: years, the award ceremony had been long and confusing. Compounded by rain, the awards were harder to receive than to win. This two-race event with awards that go deep is quite an unde(taking. Bet on Ray Witte straightenlilg this out.
ROAD RACING RAP- Janice Garcia has joined Claire Brock and Bob Davenport (all from the Breakfast Club) in being accepted to run the Boston Marathon ... On the Mondays following major marathons, USA TODAY has been giving good coverage to the races ... Daylight Savings Time will be back soon- it's always amusing how even the most intelligent runners have two watches to keep from having to reprogram the digits .. .ln the- President's column, you read what Claire Brock did in Florida. Dan Hall went along with Claire as coach. If you want to hear a long story~ ask Dan. how he did in the twQ races .. :Margie Pollitt has started a walking program and is up to three miles a day. Maybe we will see Margie run with George next year on February 16 ... Mike Marrero adds to _the attack to the opponents of the Mini Heart Marathon. Writes Mike, "The runners' entry fees go to defray the cost of the race itself. The money raised from the corporate sponsors, on the other hand, helps fund heart research in Greater Cincinnati." Tim Schilling of the Heart Association did not have a figure for what the event cost per runner, but for some comparison · The~ Columbus Marathon cost close to $70.00 per runner. Entry fee for the CM in'87 was c $15.00... c
WHAT'S ROAD RACING~ ALL ABOUT/ For the second year I have been inspired to run in the open division of the Mini. - I felt good about this until listening to the radio the other day. Said _ the commentator, "Pat Robinson said he is running for President because God told him to run. That just proves that GOO.has a sense of humor."

Valentines Day (Continued from front page)
thank them. Winners of the costume contest
received dinners or movie tickets. First place winners, Pat and Dan Comer of Middletown(Adam and Eve) won dinner for two at the Windjammer. Windjammer's manager, Mark Kline, ran the race. He's interested in getting back into competitive shape. Why didn't you turn in your chute card Mark? Your time was pretty good. Bob Platt and Connie Fincher won dinner at Garcias for their second place- costume-the lips. Actually, they won on the strength of sympathetic friends in the audience and past costume efforts. Bob gave out Tshirts and race numbers on Saturday instead of working on his costume. Thanks Bob. Our other restaurant sponsor was Barleycorns, Kenwood, won by the penguins, Robin and Tod Herzog of Hamilton.
Fidelity Investments provided movie tickets. Fidelity is the large mutual fund company that recently opened a telephone center in Cincinnati. They hope to recruit a team to compete in the Corporate Championships in May. Welcome to Cincinnati, Fidelity, and thank you.
The Valentine's Run is, fmally, an event that is made absolutely exciting by the enthusiasm of Mike Boylan, the runners and the volunteers. Mike dreamed up this race several years ago when the Finance Committee discovered that the Track Club was flat broke. In less than a month, Mike recruited sponsors and organized the race. This was just in time to
pay the bills. He has acted as MC ever since. Mike gets the crowd fired up and dancing, and he keeps the race director on track. Thanks Mike.
The runners bring a lot of talent and enthusiasm to the race. Competition for partners is fierce. It starts in the early fall. Whil Hentzen started recruiting early in the summer. We know that he would have chosen his wife, Linda, if she hadn't been pregnant. Right?
Thanks to you all. We all look forward to the Valentines Run. I knew I wouldn't be alone out there. The runners, the sponsors, the Track Club Officers and the volunteers were all terrific. This year we even had several GE runners volunteer to work the course. Someone told them that we serve beer. Thanks guys. Thanks everyone. It was a good race and a great time.

Farmersville (Continued from front page)
Shephard gradually pulled away at that point, and ended up about a minute in front of Helgeson. crc dominance did not stop there .
Brian Malthouse paced himself perfectly to a 3rd, Greg McCormick went out slow and overtook nearly everyone in sight, finishing 4th, and Far-East Sider Mike Foster sped to a 6th.
A number of other CTC runners also rll!l and won age group awards, but this reporter' didn't get the details. Complete results follow. P.S. A quarter mile stretcaof glare ice at the bottom of a hill

Dayton 5 Mile Another cold, windy, cloudy, snowy day
in February? Lovely day for a five miler on the rive!. Well over 150 runners gathered to celebrate. Jeff Camm was second in 26:08, Brian Malthouse 6th in 27 minutes plat, and Tom Grogan 18th in just a shade over 30 minutes.
ORRRC 21st Annual TAC Championship Marathon
It has been said that "It doesn't get any better than this" and on March 13th, they coulnd't have been more correct.
25 degrees at the start. A 15 mile an hour wind, gusting to about a million miles an hour, and intermittent snow. A course that zig zagged back and forth through the plains of western Farmersville, so as to take full advantage of the wind at your back for a mile, then into the wind for a mile style of racing.
Tom Grogran was 15th overall and won his age group with a 3:25, Paul McKee placed lOth overall and age grouped 3rd in 3:18:23, and Mel Baute was a place and 17 seconds behind Paul.
Jim Swingos flew up from Florida just to do 20 miles. "I've got this nice GoreTex suit that I can't ever use down there."
This reporter bought it at 24. His excuse? "There was this babe at the four mile mark wearing this amazing set of clothes. I was counting on her to give me
a "lift" at 22 on the way back, but she had gone inside to "warm up." At that point, I lost aU motivation. Swingos said before the race, "I didn't think you did marathons." I guess he's right.
By the way, these times are not official because of the wind-aided conditions.
Upcoming Programs (Continued from first page)
for races. Are you getting tired of doing the same job at every race, but afraid to try a different spot? Do you ever wonder why race officials are so emphatic about staying in order in line, filling your cards in correctly and promptly, or starting in the correct heat? The May program has the answers to these and many other questions. With Memorial Day a few weeks away, it could be very helpful to try some of these jobs when you're not under race day pressure. It will also make you a better race participant.

Recap In a club with 550 to 600 members,
chances are very slim that aU of the members will be able to attend Membership meetings. (Actually, we'd have a few problems if aU of you tried to attend. You know, having enough chairs, fire codes, those type of things.) So, for those of you who can't make it to the
- meetings, here's a run-down (no pun intended) of our February program.
Our February program featured a panel of runners who have consistently excellent performances. It gave us a chance to ask them how they do it. Panel members included Patti Baker, Pat Mulroney, Eek Keller, and Larry Whiteside. Claire Brock was unable to attend since she was off in Florida competing (see President's message). Several questions were posed to the group: How long have you been running and how did you get started, what do you eat, and fmally, how do you how do you train?
Except for Larry, who started competing in High School, none of them started running for the sake of running, much less competing. For example, Eek started as a fluke at -a Senior Olympics meet, where he had come to play in a tennis match; Patti started to "loose weight". As for diet, there were no sophisticated diet plans for this group. While they all confessed a love for Busken's and Graeter's, Pat and Patti mentioned that red meat is not a part of . their diets. Larry and Eek admitted that; although they have not cut it out of their diets, they're just not as interested in a thick juicy steak as they used to be. Rabbit food - salad and veggies - were popular with aU of them.
The answer to the training question was probably the most frustrating one for those who came expecting to hear about some mystical secret. Larry plans one speed work out on the track each week, but otherwise, his training is limited to morning runs before attending daily Mass - which means cutting a run short if necessary. Patti usually runs at lunch but that's the extent of her planning. As she is currently waiting out an injury, swimming wor~-outs are serving as a substi!ute. Injuries forced Pat off the road for a while last year as well. Eek simply tries to get out 3 - 4 times a week.
Now that the questions have aU been answered, what does it aU mean? First, race directors should consider Busken or Graeter's gift certificates as prizes. Second, the National Beef Board probably wouldn't want to advertize in our newsletter. Third, everyone gets injured now and then. Finally, it's perfectly normal to be just a teensy bit jealous of people who eat the same foods you do, train the same way you do and still beat the pants off of you in a race.
Winner's Circle
The WINNER'S CIRCLE RUNNER OF THE YEAR for 1987 is Larry Whiteside. Larry has been the soul of WC for the past two years. Paired with '86, LW has totaled 64 wins. If you ask Larry about his territorial 45-49 age division, he will probably tell you that Richard Jackson is still the only runner
