Whenthebuildingwasrenovatedin1972,theownercommissionedFábricaMensaqueRodríguezyCompañia,aworldrenownedartisanmakerof“azulejo”tilesfromSeville,Spaintocreatethetilemuralfortherecessedareainthewall.Sincethen,thisworkofarthasbeenanessentialcomponentoftheneighborhood’sbeauty,character,andcharm.Ithasbeenwidelyphotographedbylocalsaswellaspassingtourists,andithasbecomeabelovedlocallandmark.”

• ThiswordcomesfromArabic“alzulaycha”thatmeanslittlepolishedstone.TheideawasfirsttoreproducetheGreco-RomanmosaicsfromtheMiddleEastorNorthAfrica,notbyassemblingsmallpiecesofpolishedmarble(“tesserae”),butfragmentsofcolouredglazedtiles.
• Theyhavebeenfrequentlyusedinthesecountriessincethe13thcenturytocoveranddecoratewalls,fountains,pavements,ceilings,vaults,baths,orfireplaces.

• NewYorkCitytookownershipofaManhattanapartmentbuildingbelongingtoDavidHess.Thebuildingwastorndown,andhewasleftatriangleshapedpieceofproperty.
