padding DAY 3-8: Exploring the Pacaya-SamiriaReserveSpend this week exploring the Pacaya- SamiriaNational Reserve, a pristine swath of junglestretching more than five million acres andharboring some of the Amazon’s most fascinatingflora and fauna. The reserve is bordered by theMaranon and the Ucayali, two powerful rivers thatconverge to create the famed Amazon, whichfloods annually with nutrient-rich waters and isknown locally as the Mirrored Forest for thereflections created by its glassy water. Set out into this remarkable wilderness on dailyexcursions by skiff, kayak, and, when the waterlevel permits, hikes on dry land. Skim past giantlily pads afloat on black-water lakes, and venturedeep into the rainforest on narrow tributaries. Spotsloths and monkeys, including variably coloredsaddleback tamarins, noisy howlers, and shaggy-tailed monk saki monkeys. Watch for anastounding variety of birds, from tanagers andhummingbirds to parrots and endangered scarletmacaws. In the river, look for massive paiche fish, the Amazon’s largest; rare pink dolphins; and theinfamous piranhas. Enjoy an opportunity to swim in a lake in thereserve’s interior. Seek out victoria amazonica, agiant water lily that grows in small lagoons. Go ona bird-watching hike, listening for the vocaloropendola and then looking for its telltale yellowtail. Watch the sun set and listen to acacophonous symphony of nocturnal animalscalling out across the treetops. Then slip throughthe forest in a skiff as night falls, using a spotlightto find caimans, frogs, fishing bats, and othercreatures of the night. One of the unexpected joys of traveling in theUpper Amazon of Peru is the interaction we havewith the local ribereños, the traditional people wholive on the riverbanks. Visit one of the localcommunities and see the projects that we supportthrough a local nonprofit, including a variety ofhandicrafts, women’s health initiatives, andsustainable farming. (B,L,D DAILY)
