Faithfully, Kirk
With all of our attention appropriately fixed on the
anniversary of 9/11, Grandparents Day went by
without much notice. Clare and I will celebrate this
weekend at the christening of our granddaughter,
Anne. Grandparents and grandchildren share a
special bond. They do, after all, have a common
enemy. I have a hunch that real wisdom skips a
generation. The grandparent-grandchild connection
can lead to fascinating conversation. I repeat these
snippets for your enjoyment.
A grandmother was in the bathroom, putting
on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her
young granddaughter. The little girl had
observed the ritual many times before. After
the grandmother applied her lipstick and
started to leave, the child said, "But Grandma,
you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" A young grandson telephoned his grandfather
to wish him Happy Birthday. The boy asked,
“How old are you, Granddaddy.” “I am seventy-two years old today,” the man
replied.
After a long quiet pause, the grandson asked,
“Did you start at one?"
A grandfather was telling his little grandson
what his own childhood was like. "We used to
swim in a pond on the farm. We had a swing
made from a tire. It hung from a tree in our
front yard. We rode our pony. We picked
wild blackberries in the woods." The little boy’s eyes were wide.
At last he said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know
you a whole lot sooner!"
A little girl was diligently typing away on her
grandfather's word processor. She told him she
was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked.
"I don't know," she replied. "I can't read."
When his grandson asked his grandfather how
old he was, he said teasing, "I'm not sure."
"Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he
advised “Mine says I'm 4 to 6." A second-grader came home from school and
said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess
what? We learned how to make babies today." The surprised grandmother tried to keep calm.
"That's interesting." she said. "How do you
make babies?"
"It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change
y to i and add es."
A grandfather was delivering his
grandchildren to their home one day when a
fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front
seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog.
The children started discussing the dog's
duties. "They use him to keep crowds back," said one
child.
"No," said another. "He's just for good luck."
A third child brought the argument to a close.
"They use the dogs," she said, "to find the fire
hydrants."
Blessings to all grandparents.
