THE TURNER TIMES
Letter from the Office Assistant...
All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
One of the things I adore about this center is how many of the people who come here make a deliberate choice
to love life, to get to know more people, and to try new adventures. I’m impressed with how many creative
ways our members are choosing to be flexible in body, mind, and spirit.
The beginning of a new season is a wonderful time to make positive changes. Instead of making New Year’s
resolutions that you may not keep (and often leave you feeling guilty), opt for a more fun alternative—just make a decision to try
one new thing you have never tried before. Here at FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center we offer many options for this happier and
more adventurous mindset. For instance, if you haven’t tried laughter yoga, we’re offering a class in January. It isn’t about twist-
ing yourself into a pretzel, it’s about having fun in a circle of lively, loving people. I can tell you from experience, it’s highly
energizing and by the end of the session you’ll be enjoying genuine heartfelt laughter. If you want to learn a new skill, our
bridge group is offering beginning bridge lessons starting in January. You might discover a whole new game to love and a won-
derful new community to treasure. Or come on a day trip to see the behind-the-scenes technologies of a Tennessee crime lab.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll be ready to write your own “who done it?” story with the clues you gather on the trip.
Let the new things you experience bring you into a greater flow of life. You’ll feel invigorated. You’ll discover as you climb out
of your old rut that your view of life is much more expansive. Take advantage of the many opportunities here at FiftyForward to
renew your acquaintance with laughter, learning, and good times with great people.
Sincerely,
Candy Paull
Office Assistant, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

As we get into the winter months here is a reminder of our cancellation and closure policies.
• If Metro Schools are closed, we will NOT have our
regular daytime programming, classes, events or trips. The office will still be open, but potentially on a de-layed schedule. The YMCA will most likely remain open— contact them with questions at 615-646-9622.
• Day trips must have at least six sign-ups for the trip to go. Trips cancelled for attendance or weather will be determined the day before. All those signed up will be called and given a refund or credit

Letter from the Director…
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to another amazing year here at the J.L. Turner Center.
I want to use this space this month to drop a quick note of apology. Over the course of a few weeks in November and early December, we had an issue with our voicemail system where we weren't always getting messages.
It took quite a process to fully fix, and then there was a period late last month where we thought it was fixed and it was actually worse. So I want to apologize to anyone who left messages and didn’t get their call returned. I’m happy to say the problems have been solved and you can reach us as usual again at 615-622-3040.
Best regards,
Derek Stogner

Letter from the Program Director…
I’m so excited to welcome 2019 with all of you. 2018 was full of memories, but we plan on making even
more memories in the next year.
I understand it can be tough to get out and about when the weather gets bad so we have packed the
calendar with events at the Center this month. One event I’m particularly excited for is Marge Wozny’s
Laughter Yoga class. Seasonal sadness is something I think everyone goes through— so come out and
get a dose of laughter in this class. There will be no complicated yoga posing and it does not require
any previous yoga experience. I’m also excited to begin monthly birthday parties sponsored by Anthem. If you have a
January birthday come join us for a little cake and mingle celebration. In addition, the Nashville Public Library volunteers
will be back once again for a post-holiday tech day. Lastly, if you’re interested in traveling with us this year stop by and
see Janice Judd, FiftyForward Travel Coordinator, for a presentation on her 2019 travel.
Of course, we will still have some fun day trips including the TBI Crime Lab Tour, Tennessee State Capitol Tour, Colt
Chocolate Factory Tour, and our food trips. As we enter the winter months please remember that if Metro Public
Schools are closed the Center will be closed and any programming for the day will be cancelled. If you have any doubts
be sure to call the YMCA. As always, feel free to stop by the office with any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Nikki Plotts Program Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
