Sited against the hills, and taking advantage of the canyon vistas and topography, this recently renovated 1923 residence with three bedrooms and two bathrooms showcases Spanish Revival architecture with Mediterranean influences. The seamless transition between the indoor living spaces and the outdoor entertaining areas allow for an open and airy flow. Amenities include: ebony stained hardwood floor-ing, recessed lighting, central heating and air conditioning, updated plumbing and electrical systems, stainless steel appliances, dark stained and pre-distressed reclaimed cabinetry, extra thick Carrara marble slab kitchen counters with dual sinks, in-ceiling sound system, video moni-tored alarm system, pitched and coved ceilings with hand-carved beams, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, outdoor garden lighting and two water features.
Plastered cove ceilings, spiral col-umns framing the fireplace, vaulted arches and wrought iron finishes are other traditional Spanish Revival features. A hand-hammered Moroc-can inspired half dome chandelier crowns the family room. The loggia, which also opens off this room, is an all-weather, all-seasons outdoor living area.

“It is fun for us to imagine what a house looked like when it was originally built and try to restore it.” – Ryan Brown, designer
Spanish Revival refers to the architectural style which was seen from approximately 1915 to1940 throughout Southern California, Texas and Florida. Like Mission Revival, Spanish Revival was influenced by Spanish Colonial architecture of earlier centuries. Spanish Revival, however, was more ornate with stylistic detail apparent in both large features and small, such as intricately pat-terned tile work and wrought iron hardware. Both of these ele-ments are found at 8061 Woodland Lane. Spanish Revival is an extremely eclectic style. Many Mediterra-nean touches are combined to create an exotic, but harmonious appearance. Influences include Spanish Baroque, Moorish and Gothic elements. Tile roofs and stucco exteriors are characteristic with half rounded doors and windows. Elaborate tile work, applied relief ornamentation and wrought iron grillwork is used to create frames around doorways and windows and is used widely as decorative accents throughout the house. Towers and columns are often seen as are balustrades, cantilevered balconies, cov-ered porches, and arcaded walkways. Front entrances were often highly ornamented and many were balanced by a commanding triple-arched focal window.

Arched windows and doors define the formal dining room, which overlooks the living area and outdoor gardens. Hand carved wood beams frame the pitched ceiling. Diffused lighting illu-minates this space through a Moroc-can inspired chandelier.

A richly variegated tile floor using San Felipe concrete pavers from Arto Brick was chosen for the kitchen and second bathroom. Different shades of terra-cotta were applied to avoid the uniform look of a new floor. Adhering to the Spanish Revival theme, dark stained reclaimed or pre-distressed cabinetry was used together with extra thick Carrara marble slab counters.

“Open shelving becomes this multi-use, hori-zontal surface for accessories and items that you’re likely to use on a daily basis.” - Ryan Brown, designer
This modern interpretation of the galley kitchen allows for ease of function and for entertaining. White Caesar stone counters and stainless steel appliances together with a combination of wenge stained and white Italian cabinetry provides a visual interest. The living space extends to the private patio through the floor to ceiling sliding doors.

A combination of sea grass and sisal flooring was utilized in the media room, which can also function as a third bedroom. While the fibers are durable, the textures provide relaxed comfort underfoot.
Dual doors lead to one of many out-door patios overlooking the mature foliage.

The center bathroom includes dual vanities and a combination bathtub and shower. The off-white cotton drapes which frame the shower provide a sense of intimacy and retreat.

One of two outdoor water fea-tures is seen here through the double doors off the master bedroom. The neutral color palette allows the outdoors to become the artwork. All rooms have an in-ceiling sound system and recessed lighting.
