A Message from the President
Flooring and floor care can be both a financial challenge and time consuming, especially when you have so manyother tasks that demand your attention. Our purpose is to answer your questions, provide options and make purchasing, installation and maintenance as easy as possible.
We have added a new section which outlines reviewing all the elements you need to create a studio floor system (see pages 6-7). As the manufacturer, we can offer you the best price possible because there are no middle men. We make no deals because every price quote is the best deal.
Stagestep is the only flooring company that posts all of its prices. We believe in transparency and we guarantee those prices are the lowest for comparable products or we match them. For your convenience, we take all credit cards, wire transfers and checks. We also work with a finance company and take no fee or commission.
Stagestep has a 50,000-square-foot warehouse stocked with inventory which translates into shipping 90% of our orders within 72 hours. We have been introducing innovative products for 45 years, making us the oldest and largest dance floor provider in the USA. Now, with partners in England, Australia, Singapore and South America, we service the world.
We introduced the floating wood subfloor to the dance community in the 1970’s. We invented Slip NoMor, Springstep IV, Encore flooring and FloorShield Color Finish. We know dance floors and what you need as an owner of a studio, school or theater. Our goal is to marshal the resources and information you need at a valued price so you can get on with what you love to do.
Sincerely,
F. Randolph Swartz, President
P.S - Introducing a new generation of ReUseIt 2.0 the perfect product for long-term semi-permanent flooring installation. Also check out our new formulation of FloorShield. It’s easier to apply and saves you money on maintenance.

How to Buy a Studio FloorWhere do I begin? Most people have little experience in determining what kind of flooring system is best for the way you move. We at Stagestep are here to help.
To get started, we’ve provided questions and a list to prioritize your purchasing considerations. By answering these questions and listing your priorities, you are well on your way to selecting the best flooring system for you.
CONSIDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES BELOW
1. Do you rent or own the space?2. Is this new construction or a renovation?3. Will this be long-term or short-term use?4. Do you want your floor to be portable, permanent, or semi-permanent?
(How long will the new floor be in the space?)
DEFINE THE SPACE1. What kind of floor or slab is currently in the space?2. What is the slab/floor’s current composition?3. Where is the space (basement, first floor, home, commercial space, theatre)?4. What is the length and width of the space (in feet or meters)?5. Are there any unusual structures in the space (columns, doors, jog in/outs,
radiators, steps, windows, equipment)?6. What is the ceiling height?
FLOORING USE1. What type of activities will take place on the floor?2. Is the space under supervision while in use?3. Will the space be occasionally used for other activities such as receptions?4. Will equipment be used or placed on the floor?
OTHER FACTORS1. Does the flooring system have a means of reducing vibration after impact? 2. Can the system be modified easily for special conditions (multi purpose/
heavy equipment)? 3. Is the flooring surface consistent? 4. How do I repair damaged areas without replacing the whole floor? 5. What type of maintenance is required? 6. Can I take the floor or flooring system with me if I move?

n Absorption of energy
n Lateral foot support
n Resilient energy
n Non-slip
Non-SlipSafety is the number one issue with dancers and their teachers when it comes to floors. The first safety concern is the non-slip characteristic of the surface. Ballet dancers need very non-slip surfaces while contemporary dancers in bare feet need smooth giving surfaces so the floor does not cause injury to the bottom of their feet. Tappers need some give, yet also need the assurance under foot of a surface they can slide on. Ballroom and theatre dance require a “fast” (less non-slip) surface. What to do?
In an ideal world, each dance discipline would have its own unique floor surface. Since this is unlikely, Stagestep offers floors that can be “adjusted” to meet the average needs of different dance disciplines. We also have finishes and treatments that can modify a floor surface to be more accommodating to other dance styles.
Safety and Shock AbsorbencyThe second safety concern dancers have is the ability of the floor to absorb and dissipate energy, and/or safely return energy (resilient energy). If the floor fails to absorb or safely return energy, the body becomes the shock absorber, resulting in fatigue, pain, and injury. A performer’s nemesis is concrete or any other surface that is hard and unyielding.
The guaranteed way to get injured is to work on an unyielding, non-shock absorbing flooring system. Concrete is your enemy. Stagestep features roll out floors and subfloor systems that protect the body from stress fractures, excessive fatigue, and joint stress.
What Do I Need To Know?ABSORPTION OF ENERGY All movement activity generates energy. Energy directly returned to the body can result in shin splints, back and knee problems, fatigue, strains, and even broken bones. A non-energy absorbent floor or flooring system is dangerous. It can result in injury and law suits. Concrete is non-energy absorbent. Any substance put directly on concrete does not remove you from the concrete unless it contains air (like foam). Basket weave and foam sprung floating subfloors provide shock- absorbent characteristics that reduce the problems associated with hard, non-absorbent floors.
No floor can be the most absorbent and the most resilient at the same time. There is only so much energy and it can only be diffused in varying relationships of absorption and resilience. We call that “feel,” and it affects performance. Different surfaces and subfloors have different “feels,” each appropriate for different styles of dance.
LATERAL FOOT SUPPORT Perhaps the most overlooked attribute of a floor is lateral foot support. Without lateral foot support, you cannot maintain balance. Today, the leading cause of injury is not shin splints but ankle injury, due in part to flooring systems that rely solely on absorbent materials or systems that are too spongy. A term you may come across is point elastic, meaning deflection of the floor at the point of impact. The greater the deflection, the more unstable the floor.
WARNINGAny floor/floor system that you can squish together in your hands (feels soft) can be dangerous due to lack of lateral foot support.
RESILIENT ENERGY In addition to absorbency, energy can be dissipated by resiliency—think of a diving board or trampoline. Energy transfers from the body to a subfloor that deflects and safely returns energy (spring). Wood is one of the better resilient materials.
Check the chart on page 5, identify your primary use, and call us for advice. With more than 40 years of serving the dance and theatre community, no one can compare to Stagestep’s experience and expertise.
Call us with your questions. We will have the answers and the best pricing to go with them.

DANCE FLOORS WITH FOAM BACKING
Stagestep offers three rollout floors that have heavy-duty wear surfaces and high-density foam underlayments. They can be installed directly over concrete and have very good absorbency, excellent performance, but reduce the level of sound generated which means they are not recommended for tap. They are rated ideal for residual vibration and are excellent for multi-purpose floors.
Dancestep II is available in black or grey (page 12). Woodstep Plus and Woodstep Ultra (pages 14-15) are available in a maple woodgrain pattern.
FLOATING WOOD SUBFLOORSStagestep offers multiple floating wood subfloors (with customized variations) to absorb, dissipate, and provide safe, resilient energy return.
Springstep IV – Easy-to-assemble floating subfloor panels, require no tools to be installed. Assembles in 1/3 the time of a standard sprung floor (pages 22-23).
Encore (pages 16-17), our hardwood flooring system, also has a built-in floating wood subfloor.
Compass, a portable floating wood subfloor, requires no tools to assemble (page 20).
All floor surfaces without foam backing provide no relief from a hard concrete slab. Check the adjacent flooring charts for relative characteristics and the ideal combination for your movement activity.

All Springstep subfloors provide ideal lateral foot support to keep you balanced.
Enhanced performance deals with sound amplification, jumping support, balance, and residual vibration. The ability of a subfloor to absorb post-mpact vibration is important because keeping the floor still makes it easier to balance.

Everything You Need To Know About Creating A Dance Studio Floor System
VAPOR BARRIER A vapor barrier is the first step. It is always needed for installation over concrete or sub-grade floors that do not have a vapor barrier already installed. Vapor barriers prevent moisture from escaping the concrete and being absorbed by the wood subfloor, potentially swelling and warping the wood. (See page 27.)
FLOATING WOOD SUBFLOOR When creating a dance floor system, a floating wood subfloor is one of the most important elements. It provides shock absorption, resilience and lateral foot support. (See pages 22-24.)
FLOOR SURFACES When it comes to selecting your studio floor surface, you must consider: Budget, movement compatibility, types of dance activity, color, wear characteristics and texture.
n Roll-out flooring: All roll-out floors, typically referred to as marley (vinyl) floors, are available in a variety of material configurations and a multitude of colors. Different flooring surfaces are best suited to specific disciplines. Some flooring we sell is multi-disciplinary. (See pages 8-15.)
n Encore: A click-and-lock transportable hardwood floor with a factory finish and integrated sprung floor. No adhesive, screws or nails required for installation. (See pages 16-17.)
n Compass Flooring System: The portable touring floor. Stagestep’s Posi-Force locking system offers both easy assembly and disassembly. Compass comes in a variety of top finishes including hardwood, and features a built in subfloor. (See page 20.)
n Hardwood: For a permanent installation, a tongue-and-groove hardwood surface available in a variety of woods with a Springflex floating wood subfloor. (See page 18-19.)Springstep IV

ADHESIVES & TAPES There are four options for affixing vinyl flooring to your subfloor. Choosing the proper product for your installation depends if you are permanently, semi-permanently or temporarily installing your floor. (See pages 26-27.)
Double-Faced Tape and Top Tape are used for temporary and semi-permanent installations.
4” Installation Tape is used for semi-permanent installation where no top-tape is necessary.
ReUseIt 2.0 is used for long-term, semi-permanent installation.
Adhesive is used for permanent installation.
TRANSITION RAMP ADA safety standards require a ramp for access without any blockage for surfaces that rise 1.5” above the ground. When you install a floating subfloor, your studio floor will require a transition ramp. Our ramps are ADA compliant, lightweight and can easily support more than 1,000 lbs. (See page 25.)
VENTED WALL BASE Subfloors are designed, constructed and installed to leave a 1/2-inch gap between the floating subfloor and the wall to allow for proper ventilation. A vented wall base is designed to cover this space. (See page 27.)
MAINTENANCE PRODUCTS Stagestep offers a variety of maintenance products and finishes to help you make sure your floor stays clean and sanitized. Stagestep’s products include ProClean, ProClean NS, Wipeout Plus and the FloorShield Maintenance System. (See pages 28-29.)

Bravo CollectionReversible, lightweight, portable marley flooring, perfect for stage and studio. A fiberglass lining improves stability and offers better lie-flat on subfloor. Superior work surface for jazz, modern, ballet and other movement activities. (Not recommended for tap.) Bravo Classic is lighter and less expensive.
INSTALLATIONProduct can be installed directly on a floating wood subfloor, stage or hardwood surface — temporarily, semi-permanently, or permanently — using top tape, Double-Faced Tape, 4” Installation Tape, adhesive, or ReUseIt 2.0. (See page 26.)
SUBFLOOR The ideal subfloor for Bravo is a floating wood subfloor (Springstep see pages 22-23). Installation on concrete (or other rock-hard slabs) will not reduce shock. Installation on carpet can result in the floor “wrinkling” when working on it. Consult with Stagestep for the best results.
MAINTENANCE Sweep daily to remove course dirt. Clean weekly, using ProClean, a neutral detergent/degreaser that does not leave a residue (see page 28). For information regarding our non-slip products and FloorCare systems (see pages 28-29). For information on FloorShield Finish and Cleaners, (see page 30).

Woodstep Flooring CollectionSlightly textured, heavy-duty surface. Exceptionally realistic wood design combines form, function, and ease of installation. Resists wear and tear. Woodstep should be used in conjunction with a floating wood subfloor or on stage. Recommended for ballet, tap, jazz, modern dance and virtually all movement activities. (Defective taps can cause scratches which will show because of the wood grain.) Great for dance and multi-purpose activities. Woodstep Plus and Woodstep Ultra can be installed directly on a concrete slab without a floating subfloor. These floors are not recommended for tap.

Our Customers Say It Best“ An Encore Floor has the finest and most natural sound than any ‘instrument’ I’ve ever had the pleasure of dancing on. As a tap dancer, and as a producer, I look for a sturdy, and sprung, hard wood floor, producing a pleasant and clear tone. But I also need a product that is easy to assemble, store and transport. Our Customers Say It Best““ Having a high-quality dance floor is the most important
resource investment any dance studio has to make. We chose Stagestep for three reasons. One, it has a proven pedigree - it is used by major companies across the U.S. Secondly, Stagestep as a company were with us all the way through the process and supported us from day one. Third, cost. Despite its high-quality it is considerably more cost-effective than its nearest competitor. I, and my incredibly demanding dance staff, are delighted with the floors.”

TAPSHIELD®
A revolutionary topical solution.
Helps eliminate aluminum compound tap residue from all floors.
Maintenance & CleaningPROCLEAN: Super-concentrated industrial-strength floor detergent/degreaser that will not harm your floor or floor finish. Use 2–4 ozs of ProClean to a gallon of water. A gallon of the diluted mixture will cover 200 SF of flooring surface. A 5 gallon bucket of ProClean mixed to a light to medium strength of 2–3 ozs to a gallon of water will clean roughly 42,000 to 64,000 SF of flooring at a cost of $1.33 to $2.00 for each 1,000 SF cleaning.* Use ProClean to remove ProClean NS and return to a neutral clean state. Do not use on floors treated with Slip NoMor 2000C unless first rinsed with clear hot water.
1-Gallon ..................................................................................................................$25 4-Gallon case .........................................................................................................$755-Gallon pail ..........................................................................................................$85
PROCLEAN NS: Concentrated floor cleaner after initial application(s) delivers one-step non-slip treatment to vinyl floors without harming surface. Starting with a clean floor, apply ProClean NS multiple times allowing floor to air dry after each application and testing each time to determine if floor is suitably slip-resistant. Use 16 oz of ProClean NS to a gallon of water for light strength cleaning. A 5 gallon bucket of ProClean NS will clean approximately 9,000 SF of flooring after initial applications.* Never use ProClean NS in conjunction with Slip NoMor 2000C.
5-Liter bottle (1.32 gallons) ...................................................................................$45 Case of four (4) 5-liter bottles (5.28 gallons) ..................................................... $140 5-Gallon pail ....................................................................................................... $135
PROCLEAN D: Super-concentrated disinfectant cleaner. Use ProClean D for occasional disinfectant cleaning of your floors and walls in studios, schools and homes. Suitable for the disinfection of non-porous, hard, washable (water-resistant) surfaces. Liquid concentrate free of aldehyde, for wipe-on disinfection. Kills bacteria, fungus, algae and viruses (e.g. effective against hepatitis-B-virus). Mix 50–100 parts water to 1-part undiluted ProClean D, or roughly
1 ¼ to 2 ½ ozs ProClean D for every gallon of water. A 5-liter jug of ProClean D will disinfect roughly 27,000 SF of flooring at a cost $6.00 per 1,000 SF. Surface should remain wet for a period of 30 minutes to be effective.* Humidity and temperature will affect actual yield. Can be used with our FloorCare System. ProClean D should never be applied to floors treated with ProClean NS or Slip NoMor 2000C. Remove such treatments as directed. Undiluted or insufficiently diluted ProClean D will act as a stripper. 5-Liter bottle (1.32 gallons) ................................................................................ $160
SLIP NOMOR 2000C: Our “liquid rosin” is a super-concentrated formula which makes an economical non-slip solution which treats all floor surfaces — wood, tile, vinyl, and linoleum. The perfect substitute for rosin (which is not recommended for vinyl floors ever). Will not damage any surface. You control the degree of non-slip simply by adding water. One gallon makes approximately 14–20 gallons. A
5-gallon bucket of Slip NoMor 2000C will cover approximately 14,000 to 20,000 SF of flooring.* Never apply a double coat of Slip NoMor 2000C. Product must be removed with a hot water rinse prior to re-application. Use ProClean to clean floor. Never use product in conjunction with ProClean NS.5-Liter bottle (1.32 gallons) ...................................................................................$50 Case of four (4) 5-liter bottles (5.28 gallons) ..................................................... $180 5-Gallon pail ....................................................................................................... $200
*Coverage will vary widely due to mopping/wringing techniques.

Floor TroubleshootingMAINTENANCE INFORMATION
n Dry mop your floor every morning before classes.n Use a dehumidifier and turn it on at night to eliminate excessive moisture in the air that could contribute to a slippery floor. n Temperature changes can cause flooring to expand and contract, causing ripples and possible separation from double-faced tape (used in semi- permanent installations).n If temperature fluctuations are great and cannot be controlled, install flooring
with top tape only and reset the flooring as needed.n Check your HVAC system and check air quality and filters.n Wash floor weekly with neutral detergent/degreaser to dissolve dirt and body oils. n Never use household products or plain water.
ALUMINUM COMPOUND TAP RESIDUEAluminum compound taps can disintegrate on flooring, leaving a black/grey residue. To avoid residue, use aluminum or steel taps and either TapShield or FloorShield Maintenance System (pages 28 and 30). See maintenance instructions online at www.stagestep.com for additional information and products to help you clean or help to eliminate these marks.
TEMPERATURE Variations in temperature can have a negative impact on installation, non-slip characteristics and how fast the floor gets dirty. Warm air holds moisture; cool air releases moisture. During the day, most studios become warmer due to body heat. At night, the temperature drops due to no bodies, plus the thermostat is usually turned down. In the morning, the moisture held by the warm air has settled on the floor along with all the dust and dirt that had been stirred up during the day. The combination of these two factors creates slippery floors, which are prone to develop scuff marks.
HANDLING & STORING YOUR FLOOR Store in a dry, clean, protected space. Temperature should be between 55 and 80 degrees. Floors should be wrapped around a rigid tube with a diameter of at least 4 inches (6 inches is better). Floors should be stored standing on end.
Never...
n Expose to direct sunlight
n Store lying down
n Store on top of each other
n Store in excess cold or heat
n Fold or creasen Turn over by twisting and overlapping from the side edges
n Put weight on rolled-up floor
n Install loose laid (without tape or adhesive)
n Expose to standing watern Permanently install flooring with adhesive without a professional flooring installer
Do not use rosin, vinegar, cola, ammonia, bleach, alcohol, solvents, or any product that says it will leave your floor shiny.
NOTE: Most floors need weekly cleaning with a detergent/degreaser. (Use ProClean — page 28.)
Where tap dancing will be a major activity, we recommend putting a finish on the floor. (Use FloorShield Finish, see page 30.)

Letting the floor sit overnight or longer is ideal. Floor must lie flat before taping. Leave 1/16” gap at all ..... seams and 1/2” at walls.2. Tape all seams and circumference using 1-1/2” vinyl, or 1-1/2” or 2” cloth tape.3. Floor must be installed over a smooth, level surface.
SEMI-PERMANENT INSTALLATION Using Double-Faced Tape and Top Tape, Vinyl or Cloth Tape or 4” installation tape taht does not require top tape. 1. Subfloor (ideally sprung subfloor) surface must be clean, dry, level, and ........ smooth, with all screw holes and seams filled with wood putty, wood filler or taped over.2. Roll out flooring and let it acclimate to room temperature. When the floor arrives, it may be rolled inside out. Please make certain that the smooth side is up, and the foam or textured surface is down. The room temperature should be the highest temperature the room will reach when in use. (Remember, all those bodies working creates heat.) Acclimatizing the floor may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.3. Make certain the floor is lying flat to the subfloor and that all seams are even. Make all appropriate cuts. Leave a 1/2” gap at walls and 1/16” gap between the seams.4. Your floor should look like it is ready to be used.5. Secure one end of each roll of flooring with weight so it will not move.6. Mark the edges of the flooring onto the subfloor with a pencil. Begin by re-rolling the flooring roll closest to the farthest wall onto its core and apply double-faced tape to the subfloor at the marked perimeter and down the middle 3.25 ft. from the edge. Leave all other rolls in place and rolled out.7. Roll the flooring into place and check positioning over the tape.8. If all is fine, roll up the floor, remove the protective paper from the double-faced tape and re-roll over the exposed tape surface. Be careful not to step on rolled-out vinyl over the double-faced tape until you are confident the vinyl is flat without any ripples or rolls.9. Repeat procedures 6 through 8 for each roll.

10. If necessary, use a 75 lb. roller to further secure the floor using an “S” path, allowing ripples or air bubbles to be pushed out and not trapped under the flooring.11. Tape all seams and perimeter of the floor using 1-1/2” or 2” vinyl or cloth tape.
Caution: Change top tape every three months or as necessary. Change double-faced tape a minimum of every two years. Failure to do so can cause flooring to crack and ripple.
