"We all know that the moment the virulence of coronavirus slows down, we have a far more serious challenge of climate change before us," he said in a vir- tual event organised by the International Buddhist Confederation at Rashtra- pati Bhavan. Kovind said the world seemed full of suffering, in short term as well as in long term. "There are many stories of kings and affluent people suffering from acute de- pression who took refuge in Buddha to escape cruelties of life," said the President. He said the life of Bud- dha challenged earlier con- victions as he believed in finding deliverance from suffering in the midst of this imperfect world. "Today, as the pandemic ravages human lives and economies across the globe, Buddha's message serves like a beacon. He ad- vised people to shun greed, hatred, violence, jealousy and many other vices to find happiness. Contrast this message with the han- kering of an unrepentant mankind indulging in the same old violence and degradation of nature," said Kovind. The President said India was proud of being the land of the origin of 'Dhamma'. "In India, we see Bud- dhism as a fresh expression of the sublime truth," he said at the event organised on the occasion of the Dharma Chakra Diwas. "Following in their foot- steps, we should strive to hear the call of the Buddha, to respond to his invitation to walk the noble path," said the President. The International Bud- dhist Confederation or IBC, with its presence in 36 countries, is holding the celebrations around the world. "We, however, are in the midst of a virulent pan- demic that has over- whelmed the entire hu- manity. Perhaps no part of the world remains un- touched by this calamity that adversely affects every individual. As a precaution, we have to follow certain discipline and maintain physical dis- tance," he said. The IBC is, therefore, holding the events virtu- ally, Kovind said, adding that such an effort is praise- worthy, because this makes it possible for a far larger number of people, from all corners of the world, to participate in them. "The world has suffered much this year, and I sin- cerely wish that this sacred day heralds a new ray of hope and grants a glimpse of happiness. I also pray that it lights the lamp of wisdom in the heart of everyone," the President concluded. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal to cover the members of the community under the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY) which aims at providing financial as- sistance to the destitute elderly, dif- ferently-abled persons and widows, he said. Around 5,000 transgenders will get a monthly pension in between Rs 500 and Rs 900 depending on their age, Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Minister Ashok Panda said. The government’s decision was taken in view of the promises made in the ruling BJD’s manifesto for the 2019 Assemble polls, the minister said. Panda said that the transgender people will have to apply on the official website of the department to register themselves under the MBPY. “Around 5,000 transgenders will benefit from the government’s deci- sion,” he said. The associations of transgenders hailed the state govern- ment for including them under the social welfare programme. Some other states have already in- troduced such social welfare schemes for the community. For instance, the J&K Administra- tive Council has reportedly extended the coverage of its Integrated Social Security Scheme to transgenders. An- dra Pradesh and Kerala governments had earlier announced pension schemes for them. Panda, however, said that the Odisha government has also decided to give one-time additional assistance of Rs 1,000 to each of 48 lakh exist- ing beneficiaries under the MBPY scheme in view of the COVID-19 crisis. The minister said the funds re- quired for the purpose have already been allocated, and the beneficiaries will get the assistance soon. He said the beneficiaries have al- ready received pensions in advance for four months during the current fiscal in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. One such star, actress Kan- gana Ranaut, has been making the most of her time in Manali. Kangana's team shared a sneak-peek into her life among her family, leaving the internet in awe of her. A clip shared by her team, shows Kangana en- joying a picnic with her sis- ter Rangoli Chandel, nephew Prithvi and other family members, is creat- ing a buzz online. In the clip, Kangana is seen chilling and having fun with her family. From climbing up the mountain slopes to danc- ing with her mom and rela- tives, Kangana can be seen doing all fun things during her family picnic. How- ever, the most adorable moment that steals the show is when the 'Manikarnika' star is seen playing with her nephew. The actress was also seen dancing in her own world while enjoying the beauty of nature. Rangoli and Kangana are also seen climbing the slopes of the hills. Rangoli posted pic- tures of the picnic on Insta- gram. “On our parents request Kangana planned a picnic for the family, before the rains here they wanted to enjoy summer outdoors, even though we are in green zone but it was a long a tedious process to get permissions, thanking all the authorities in Hi- machal to help us with re- quired permissions, it was a much-needed family out- ing", read the caption. Beijing imposed the leg- islation on the former British colony earlier this week despite protests from Hong Kongers and Western nations, setting China's freest city and a major financial hub on a more authoritarian track. Critics say the law, which punishes crimes of secession, subversion, ter- rorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison, is aimed at crushing dissent and a long-running campaign for greater democracy. Po- lice say 23-year-old Tong Ying-kit rammed and in- jured some officers at an illegal protest on Wednes- day. A video showed a biker knocking over sev- eral officers before the dri- ver falls over and is ar- rested. Tong, who was hospi- talised after the incident, was charged less than 24 hours after the city gov- ernment said the slogan he was carrying - "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" - connotes sepa- ratism or subversion un- der the new law. The new legislation gives the security office greater enforcement ac- tion and powers to take suspects onto the main- land, as well as granting privileges for agents, in- cluding that Hong Kong authorities cannot inspect their vehicles. China's par- liament adopted the secu- rity law after sometimes violent protests last year triggered by fears Beijing was stifling freedoms, guaranteed by a "one country, two systems" for- mula agreed when Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997. Inspector General of Police, Kan- pur, Mohit Agarwal on Saturday said, "To nab Vikas Dubey and his accom- plices, as many as 25 teams have been formed which are conducting raids in different districts of the state and other states as well." Police officials also said the surveil- lance team was scanning over 500 mobile phones and efforts were on to retrieve information pertaining to Dubey, who has faced about 60 crim- inal cases. The Special Task Force of UP Police has also been roped in. Agarwal said a cash reward of Rs 50,000 has been announced for pro- viding information about Dubey and the identity of the person will be kept secret. He also said seven policemen, who were injured in the encounter, had been admitted to a private hospi- tal where their condition was said to be stable. Police had late on Friday night raided Dubey's house in Krishnana- gar area of Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rushed to Kanpur on Fri- day to meet the family members of the slain policemen and announced financial assistance of Rs 1 crore each to the bereaved families. Eight police personnel, including a DSP, were killed and seven others were injured in the attack on a police team after it entered Bikru village past Thursday midnight to arrest Dubey. The attackers fled, snatching weapons from the dead and wounded policemen. However, two of them were later killed in a firefight with po- lice. Promising that those behind the heinous crime will not be let off, the Chief Minister said besides extraor- dinary pension, a government job would be given to a member of each of the bereaved families. Stressing that the government was with the families, Adityanath said it would work to ensure that justice was done and those behind the crime were punished as per the law. "Some of the weapons which the miscreants had fled with have been recovered.
