8 Head from WCRA Semi-Finals to big payouts at Windy City RoundupBy Amy Wilson The World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) was created to develop and advance the sport of rodeo by aligning all levels of competition. Athletes could pay to nominate events which the WCRA ranked into four divisions, to accumulate points to qualify for the WCRA Semi-finals in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the Lazy E Are-na. For the barrel racing, the WCRA also offered the Last Chance Qualifier prior to the start of the semi-finals for any contestant who wasn’t already qualified. The top four times from each of the two preliminary rounds, and the top 24 in the average (not including the eight who were already in) advanced to the Progressive Round. It was then a bracket style format with A, B, C and D pools. The two fastest times of each pool advanced to the final round, along with the top eight from the WCRA standings. During the final round of the semi-finals, three athletes from each Final Round pool – A and B – and the next fastest two times, advanced to the Windy City Roundup. The Days of ’47 Rodeo Champion, Hailey Kinsel, also has an invitation to Chicago for the one-night, $1 million rodeo which will be held in conjunction with the Professional Bull Riders(PBR) January 12-13 Elite-Tour event. The eight barrel racers, in addition to Kinsel, include: Cheyenne Wimberley, Hallie Hanssen, Kylie Weast, Lisa Lockhart, Kelly Con-rado, Ivy Conrado, Michelle Darling, and Kelsey Cadwell. Cheyenne Wimberley won Final Round Pool A to best all runs made on that pattern with her time of 16.196. (The barrel pattern changed after the first two rounds preliminary rounds, when they took down the roping lane and made one big arena for the pro-gressive and final rounds.) Wimberley, who was encouraged by her boyfriend to nominate a couple of jackpots last minute, was riding Liz Prickett’s mare, Streakin Images “Lexus”. The mare has some obvious speed, and Wimberley explained their final run from her perspective. “She ran into the first barrel and kind of shook her head…so I was a little nervous about the situation. Then she came back, and when she came back, she flew across the pen and sucked up the second. At that point I was like, ‘just get around the third’.” She hasn’t ever had what she would consider a perfect run on Lex-us, but has learned to accept her for how she is. “It’s just her world, and we just live in it,” Wimberley said with a laugh. She first got the mare to ride and keep tuned up while Liz was moving. Lexus was trained by Lance Graves, and as expected, all trainers have their own style. “I kind of wanted to train on her and make her do some things that she really didn’t want to do,” Wimberley remembers. She was also struggling to find the right bit for her, “One day my mom and I were driving and I said, ‘I’m over this. I’m taking all that head gear off and I don’t care what she does’. WCRA Semi-Finals Pays out more than $500,000 More than $315,000 was paid out to rodeo athletes today as the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) concluded their semi-finals rounds in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the Lazy E Arena. The five-day event paid out more than $500,000 to cowboys and cow-girls from around the globe and out of more than 600, 81 athletes advanced to the $1 Million Major Rodeo (Windy City Roundup) on January 11 at Allstate Arena in Chicago. During the semi-finals, eight athletes in each discipline with the highest scores or fastest times along with the winners of the Days of ‘47 rodeo advanced to the Windy City Roundup. The one-night, $1 million rodeo will be held in conjunction with the Professional Bulls Riders (PBR) January 12-13 Elite-Tour event, creating a full weekend of western lifestyle sports in one of the world’s largest mainstream markets. This evening, Cheyenne Wimberly walked away with a $7,000 paycheck after running the best overall time in barrels with a 16.196 while Tyler Pearson earned the number one spot in steer wrestling and a $7,000 payday after finishing with a 3.77. The team roping duo Clay Smith and Paul Eaves cleared $7,000 after a 4.49 catch, good for the best overall time in the pools. JJ Hampton moved to the number one spot in breakaway roping with a 2.27 time earning $7,200 in the final round. Timber Moore closed out the timed event after winning $7,000 in the tie-down roping with a 6.72 time. During the rough stock, Jake Vold received a 91-point score in the bareback and netted $7,000 in earnings during the performance as Jake Finlay had an 89.5 point ride in saddle bronc and $7,000 payout. Claudio Montanha Junior will go into Chicago with the number one seed after scoring 85.5 in bull riding, making it a $9,625 pay day. Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up Association helps those impacted by Camp Fire This has been a trying, heartbreaking time for the people in Cali-fornia, especially in the northern part of the state. Firefighting officials tackling the Camp Fire blaze in Butte County, said in an alert on Nov. 18 that the flames were 65 percent contained. The devastation in the region has been vast, with homes and businesses being burned to the ground and at least 77 people dy-ing, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). About 150,000 acres have been scorched as of Nov. 17. More than 10,300 single residences and 410 businesses have been destroyed. Thousands of firefighters are deployed at the scene of the fire, where 14,500 structures are still at risk. The Camp Fire is 60 miles from Red Bluff.

On Nov. 18, the local sheriff ’s department said there were still 993 people unaccounted for. It said a dead body had been found over the weekend. “Of the 77 fatalities, we have tentatively identified 67 individu-als,” officers wrote in a release, published to Twitter. The Butte County website is maintaining a list of missing per-sons. In this time of need, the Red Bluff Round-Up Association stepped up to give people hope on Nov. 17. The Red Bluff Round-Up Association loaded up supplies of palettes of water, Round-Up merchandise such as hats, warm gloves, rodeo pins, ticket vouchers for the upcoming 2019 Red Bluff Round-Up (April 19-21), and Wal-mart gift cards for those impacted by the Camp Fire. “One of our biggest missions here is we definitely want to give back to our community,” said James Miller, the general manager of the Red Bluff Rodeo. “These are people who are in our backyard who are being affected tremendously, and we felt like this would be a great way to give back to our community. We want to always have a positive impact into our community and this was a good way to do it. These are customers who come to our rodeo, and we want to give back.” The Red Bluff Round-Up distributed goods to evacuees in the Toys R Us parking lot, Chico East Alvechurch, Elks lodge, FEMA and the Wal-mart parking lot. In response to the Red Bluff Round-Up Association’s act of kindness the Minot (N.D.) Y’s Men’s Rodeo is sending additional financial support to the Red Bluff Round-Up Association to distrib-ute more goods. The Minot (N.D.) Y’s Men’s Rodeo also is challeng-ing other rodeo committees to do the same. Anyone wanting to make a donation can make checks to the Red Bluff Round-Up museum. With the donations, more supplies and gift cards will be purchased for those in need. While many locations have donation sites that are being filled with clothing and some basic necessities, needs that are not being sufficiently met are as follows: Gas cards, gift cards, sleeping bags, baby/toddler items, new items such as undergarments and socks, evacuation site with basic utilities to shower, use the restroom or do laundry. “The reaction from people was shock, gratitude, and people wor-ried about where they will go once they are forced to leave,” Miller said. “People talked about being out of work due to their places of business being taken in the fire. One man who was 1 year away from retirement said he will now have to postpone retirement due to losing everything and needing to rebuild a life for himself and his family.” --Courtesy of www.prorodeo.com

barrel race with me. It’s been the weirdest thing.” Now they can laugh about it all the way to bank. “We all want them to be a certain way, but sometimes they’re just not that way,” she added. Wimberley has also learned to let Lexus pick her own speed to the first barrel. “After that I just go through the motions and stay on,” she said as she pointed out how powerful she is. “When she pushes off on the backside of the barrels, it’s just an explosion. She’s a pretty big mare, so that reach is already big.” While Liz admits that without Wimberley she probably wouldn’t have ever known what Lexus was capable of, Wimberley is equally as grateful for Liz. “It’s nice to have someone who’s that apprecia-tive and just as excited,” Wimberley said. At the WCRA semi-finals, Wimberley joked that she’s a “has been”. She’s ran barrels her whole life and won her first state cham-pionship when she was only four years old. She filled her WPRA card when she was 11 years old and finished 16th that year. “I’ve been rodeoing a really long time, but I haven’t rodeoed in 20 years. I went to the NFR in ‘97 and ‘98. I came home after that. I always tell people that I couldn’t stay behind the donut and I got tired of keeping it between the mustard and mayonnaise – the traveling got to me,” she explained. Wimberley never quit riding or training, and now she gets to go somewhere she’s never been before. With Chicago in January on her schedule, Wimberley’s biggest concern is getting there. “I’m from El Paso, so we’re desert people. I really can’t drive in any snow and ice. When it does that here (Stephen-ville, Texas), I don’t even go to town for 3 or 4 days,” she said laughing. “But I’m excited about the opportunity.” Coming in second in Final Round Pool A was one of the leading futurity trainers Hallie Hanssen on her star former futurity horse Tres Movidas. Hanssen commented on how nice it was to be able to fit in these type of big paying rodeos with her and her hus-band Lee’s busy schedule of training and running futurity colts. “It’s a really great opportunity. Lee (her husband) and I started nominat-ing for this reason…to be able to train colts and allow Tres Movidas the showcase opportunities at big money rodeos the way we feel she deserves. Until this point that has been hard for us to do with our schedule. The WCRA format allows me to keep my focus on my futurity horses and get to big money rodeos to run Tres Movidas against the best in the world. So far it’s working out well!”. Hanssen now has the opportunity to run for a $50,000 first place check at the Windy City Roundup in Chicago in January 2019. Lisa Lockhart and Louie (An Oakie With Cash) won Final Round Pool B to collect a check for $7,000 and earn their spot to Chicago with Kelly Conrado and Tibbie just 2 hundredths behind them in second. Kelly Conrado, who earned his spot in the WCRA semi-finals by placing second in the Last Chance Qualifier, had been encouraged to go Guthrie by Chelsea Shaffer...and he’s now more

than grateful she told him that he needed to go. Conrado, who was one of only two male barrel racers competing there, was riding his home-raised and trained mare, Cfour Tibbie Stinson. “She showed why she’s Tibbie,” Conrado said after making four impressive runs. “As a male barrel horse trainer and competitor, my only option has been to train a new horse every year and go to futurities to impact my finances by competing in barrel racing. The kind of money the WCRA is offering can have a substantial impact on your life – if they keep running it with these majors. I don’t have to find some-body to ride my NFR caliber horse, I can do it myself – that’s a big deal to me. I’m so grateful that they’re giving us this opportunity – men and women alike – to sail a new ship,” Conrado explained. He and his daughter, Ivy, ran back-to-back in Pool B and both qualified to Chicago. “What an awesome opportunity for me to compete with my daughter – not against her, but with her – on a stage like that. Really, we made history…first father and daughter to compete together in the barrel racing at a professional rodeo event,” Con-rado said sincerely. By Tanya Randall Nisa Berry and VF Look Im Back (“Picasso”) took top honors at the inaugural running of the $25,000-added Revolution Races Finale, held Nov. 15-18 at the Somervell Expo Center in Glen Rose, Texas. Their victory in the Shootout Finals was worth $4,357. “When you’re a horse trainer, you get pretty thick skinned about things,” said Berry of Stephenville, Texas. “This mare has made me cry a lot this year. She leaves me with such an abundance of emo-tion. She’s gone above and beyond my expectations. It’s just crazy, what she’s won for me this year. Knowing where we’ve come from and what we went through—she leaves me speechless.” At Glen Rose, Berry and Picasso started off with a tipped barrel, but came back to qualify for the shootout in the second round. “She started the week feeling really good,” said Berry, who want-ed to thank Revolution Races for producing their lucrative races. “The first run was rider error on my part. I sat a hair too soon at the third and she caught it. I didn’t beat myself up over it. I watched my video and focused on what I needed to do to fix the little things. “The second run was reverse order, and I was bottom of the ground. Knowing my horse, I knew it was going to be a little deep for her. She ran a 15.2. I rode better and I was pleased with her, but I wasn’t sure it was enough to make it back.” The top 20 times from each qualifying round got a spot in Shoot-out on Sunday. Berry didn’t know she’d made until she got a text at midnight. “The cold front was coming in and I was out in the barn check-ing on things when I got the text,” she said. “I thought, ‘Man I need to get inside and get to bed to be ready for this!’” With the cold front, Picasso, who can be a bit rowdy, was feeling frisky. “She was wanting to go and wanting to buck,” laughed Berry. “I knew she was feeling good. The more runs she makes, the grittier she gets. It’s like she knows it’s short go time. “The biggest thing for me was to be mentally prepared. I knew she could clock. I just had to sit up and ride and stay out of her way and let her work.” They turned in their fastest time of the weekend, a 14.763. “She continues to amaze me,” said Berry. Bred by Danny Ray’s Victory Farms, Picasso, 6, is by leading sire Eddie Stinson out of Strikin Back, by De Best Cash. Berry initially took the mare in for training as a 3-year-old. In late May of her fu-turity year, Berry along with Erin Zoucha purchased the mare under the partnership Triple B Performance Horses. The quirky mare tested Berry in every way before coming into her own as a second-year derby horse. “It was a long, hard road with this mare,” said Berry. “It’s all in the horse’s time. This mare was kind of wrote off and not expected to be anything. I think people get to feeling like too. She’s helped me to get through some bumps in life.” Berry said having Picasso over come so much to win things like the Diamonds & Dirt Derby, the WPRA Finals Derby and WPRA Permit Holders Race has made her appreciate the little break-throughs with her other horses, and each victory reminds her that although training horses is a roller coaster, there are small moments at the top that makes it worth it. The Colorado native didn’t grow up in a horse or rodeo family, per se, but her mother did the best she could to keep her involved with horses. While Berry said the number of people who have helped and influenced her along the way is too long to list, she cred-its cutting horse trainer Mike McCarty with helping her develop the foundation of her program. “Mike fine-tuned my finesse and feel,” she said. “He helped me

understand more what we are asking of these horses. That horses are individuals. What I learned with him is the root foundation of my program.” Berry also wanted to thank Zoucha for her continued support. “I could be where I’m at if not for her,” said Berry. “Her trusting and believing me has meant a lot.” Next up for the Triple B Team—in addition to the opening of Triple B Rehab and Conditioning in Sutton, Nebraska—is a new

The Final Countdown to NFR 2018 - Interviews #11-#15 Are you ready? Do you have the right cable plan, is your Dish or DirectTV plan updated so you get CBS Sports Network? The NFR is upon us; it is Cowboy Christmas for sure as the Top 15 barrel rac-ers in the world are headed to the Thomas & Mack! Again in 2018 each go round will again pay $26,231 for 1st, $20,731 for 2nd, $15,654 for 3rd, $11,000 for 4th, $6,769 for 5th, $4,231 for 6th. The average over 10 rounds will pay $67,269 for 1st, $54,577 for 2nd, $43,154 for 3rd, $31,731 for 4th, $22,846 for 5th, $16,500 for 6th, $11,423 for 7th, and $6,346 for 8th. It is an interesting mix of talent this year at the NFR. Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi and Lisa Lockhart both are competing at their 12th NFR; Tammy Fischer is competing at her 7th NFR; but the rest of the field all have 3 NFR Qualifications or less. In fact, there are 6 - 1st time qualifiers this year again just like the past two years. This year will feature many of the big money winners from the last several NFRs. Hailey Kinsel & Dm Sissy Hayday return to the site where they not only set an arena record but set a NFR barrel racing earnings record of $189,385 last year; they lead the world standings coming into the NFR. In #2 in the World is last year’s World Champion Nellie Miller; she and her amazing mount Rafter W Minnie Reba will try to repeat as world champions. Coming in #3 in the World, World Champion NFR veteran Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi returns riding Yeah Hes Firen whom she has previously won the world on. In #4 Lisa Lockhart returns riding the highest money earning NFR horse of all time, An Oakie With Cash. On top of all this Amberleigh Moore brings the top earning barrel horse of 2016, CP Dark Moon, back to the Thomas & Mack & Ivy Conrado is again riding Kn Fabs Gift Of Fame whom she rode to 2nd place in the Average at the NFR last year. These are just a few of the proven horses returning to the NFR

and then there are a bunch of great young horses making their first appearances that have been winning all year. It should be very tough to get one of those big checks in the round and average! This year’s NFR runs from December 6-15, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV. The rodeo coverage starts each night on CBS Sports Network at 9:30 pm ET with the Live Action kicking off at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT. The rodeo will also be carried on ProRodeoTV.com. We will include more viewing information the week before the NFR kicks off. Bruner: Hebrews 12:1-2 has helped me a lot this year. Shu Fire has won about $80,000 in an S shank rope nose hacka-more. Right now, those two bits are the most crucial! I don’t train in them, and rarely ride anything else in those type of bits. My trailer doesn’t leave our place without a twisted gag snaffle, Kerry Kelly correction bit, and a Dave Elliot long shank skinny twist.

the top 15, its their heart! You can’t compete at this level if your horse doesn’t want to win as bad as you do yourself. He would walk through fire if I asked him to. I am not sure how that bond was cre-ated but I do know that it is the reason that he tries so hard!

BRR: What schedule of rest, runs and exercise best suits your horse(s) between the end of the regular season & the NFR to have them at their peak during the Finals? Telford: I have no idea what the correct recipe for that is, but I did give both horses 7 weeks off. I stuck some corrective shoes on Cool Whip to let his heal settle down after an abscess at the end of the season. I had Shu Fire’s shoes set back so she is set really full under her heals. We have to keep them shod so tight all summer, preventing shoes from being pulled, so I tried to take advantage of this down time as far as their feet were concerned. Starting in November, we were back to competing and we will take it one run at a time to determine how many runs they need be-fore December 6th. As for myself goes, I will be running as many horses as I can, from futurity colts to my kid’s horses. I know I ride better and more accurate when I have been on all different kinds of horses and I think that it makes me rely on my feel and timing more vs. my mental, black and white game plan.

BRR: What schedule of rest, runs and exercise best suits your horse(s) between the end of the regular season & the NFR to have them at their peak during the Finals? Pozzobon: This will be their first time to the NFR so we will see if it works. I gave them rest for a month, then started building them back up. I will run them the two weeks before the NFR so we are sharp and our timing is on point.

BRR: If you could have one piece of advice, quote, or Bible verse on your trailer as you went down the road to share with people, what would it be and why?

Pozzobon: Where There’s A Will There’s A Way. This is a very ac-curate way to describe me and my success. I’ve ran in to thousands of hurdles through this journey and just kept pushing through to my main goal. No matter what life throws at you, learn from it and remember why you started and what you are aiming for. Never settle for less than that. It’s all possible.

Happy Thanksgiving! I trust that you are blessed beyond measure and are full of thanks for everything good in your life! Not so sure that there ARE good things in your life?

Well, let’s look at Psl. 103: 1-5. It starts out, “Bless the Lord, O my soul”. You can say it like this. “Mind, thank God!!!” Your soul is your mind, your will and your emotions. David had to tell his mind TWICE to bless, or thank, God. And then he went on to say, “And forget not ALL his benefits.” Well look at that! A ‘BENEFITS’ package!! Woo Hoo! What are those benefits? He forgives ALL my sins. He heals ALL my diseases. He redeems my life from destruction. He crowns me with loving kindness and tender mercy. He satisfies my mouth with good things, so that my youth is renewed like the eagles! If you can think of nothing to thank God for, start right there! God is on our

side. He loves us. You DO have much to be thankful for. And when you begin to look at THOSE benefits, He will remind you of much, much more! Enjoy your thanksgiving week, knowing that you are top priority to God!
