Many folks I know arerather scornful of modern so-cial media like Facebook.

However, the wife and Ilike FB; it helps us keep upwith our grown children and

their families. However, I have observed some negatives aboutFacebook. For one thing FB seems to have redefined friendship.“Really?! You have 397 friends?” It has also helped create a new abbreviated language. One acquaintance heard of a friendʼs relativeʼs death and sent “LOL”. She thought it meant “lots of love”.Oops! Others use FB to engage in a sort of cathartic screaming. Onewants to ask, “Should you really be posting how much you hate yourmother?”

One of the most distressing aspects about social media is itspunctiliar ability to expunge someone out of oneʼs life without explanation in one frigid, detached click. We all know that relationships end, but normally the parties know why. Much “unfriending” entails no explanation and is not open to reconciliation,no matter how it is pursued. The one who unfriends like this is notinterested in reconciliation. In fact, part of the point of this unfriendingis to both scorn and bewilder the unfriended. It is often just a cowardly and vindictive act by someone who doesnʼt have the character to meet face to face to try to iron out differences. It not onlyviolates Godʼs Word (Matthew 4:24) but it also reveals how verysmall and petty and “unfriender” is.

R - E - S - P - E - C - TJust when did that word stop being used in the English lan-

guage? I canʼt really remember, but I know, for a fact, it hasbeen quite awhile. My Webster Collegiate Dictionary defines itas: “consideration; a high or special regard; to consider worthyor of high regard.” Oh, I remember that. I remember Gram andGrandad teaching me to respect elders, teachers, people in au-thority, and, in fact, all humankind as well as animals.

Boy, was that a long time ago. And somewhere along theline, apparently the word, itsʼ meaning, and application of itsʼusage has slipped through the cracks. You donʼt see it muchon the tablets with texting, and certainly not on TV as it shouldapply to kindness and consideration. Nor is it used in conjunc-tion with privacy, decency, or that old fashioned term, Self Re-spect.

No one walking around in slovenly clothing, shouting vul-garities into cell phones and pushing his or her ahead of peoplein lines can have much self respect, let alone understandingthe term.

I do know, from experience, one has to give respect inorder to get it back in return, but since it is no longer even ut-tered, it is hard to respect those who havenʼt a clue as to whatit is all about.

There is no respect for others, for oneʼs privacy (cellphones blaring as well as vulgar words from too loud radios),for other peopleʼs property, and yes, for the basic respect forlife itself, whether it is a neighbor or the neighborʼs pet.

Respecting othersʼ faith, culture, opinions, clothing, tradi-tions, space, and feelings has seemingly all but disappearedfrom our lives as we have known them. No one talks quietly, expresses concern for one anotherʼs well being, nor do manycare about anyone other than him or her self. And I think thatʼssad.

Perhaps the inventions of technology that have removedus from actual physical eye and verbal contact with one anotherhas resulted in the removal of respect, and replaced it with “Idonʼt care about anyone but myself.”

Maybe I am too old to grasp the concept of living for themoment and to heck with what anyone thinks or says or does,as long as it doesnʼt get in my way. And maybe I have just beenexposed to an element of society in my area that has lost trackof values and regards for others. Iʼd like to think there are stillmany folks out there who care for one another and have selfrespect enough to want to better themselves and rise abovethe mass of clods who push their way ahead of everyone else, take advantage of those who attempt to be polite in spite ofthose who try and respect their fellow men..and women, whospew innuendoes and pornography under the guise of “music, dancing, and talent” with little or no regard for decency and re-spect for children, family values and people of faith who havelittle or no say in what television, printed words and pictures, and most everything falling under the category of “entertain-ment” is offered. I canʼt think being naked, in lieu of actual talent, could do much for oneʼs self esteem. But I presume the notori-ety, money, and fifteen minutes of fame means more, particu-larly if he or she has never been exposed to self respect.

Boy, I am on a soapbox today, but quite frankly, it worriesme that everyone from government officials right down to thebig business tycoons have thrown out respect for people, places, things, and values our country and ancestors based ourfutures on. No one seems to remember the Golden Rule, nordo many even care. The civility of civilization is disappearing aswe speak. Please letʼs care.
