a special Welcome

Whether you are a parishioner, a visitor, a Catholic returning to the

Church or someone seeking faith, we hope you find your time among

us inviting and welcoming. Please feel free to ask anyone for

assistance.

NEW TO OUR PARISH? We’d love to have you join our faith community! Start the process online by visiting our website: steugenecongregation.org or by calling the parish office 414-918-1102

Fr. Paul blessed our Ugandan travelers at the 4;30 Mass on Feb. 16th. He asks our entire parish to pray for him and our parishioners: Ed Ricker, Jenny and Mark Kopetsky, Herb and Mary Zimmers, and Jerry Powers, as they visit our sister parish, Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Nkokonjeru, Uganda.

We welcome Carolina Elizabeth Censky

to the Church as she celebrates the sacrament of baptism. May the seeds of faith grow always stronger in her heart and may our prayers support her parents

and godparents in their responsibility of raising her in the Catholic faith.

PASTOR’S CORNER

Are you considering serving the Church as an Ordained Deacon?

The Church calls men to be deacons “in-service” to the People of God. If you are a man (married or single), that feels this call and wants to know more, please contact the Office for Diaconate Formation at 414-758-2207 or [email protected]. You can also go to the INQUIRY FOR DISCERNMENT PROGRAM. The schedule of these sessions can be found at archmil.org/offices/Diaconate

Friends:

The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter is certainly one of those Catholic days which does not make a lot of sense even to most Catholics. On February 22nd, the Church marked the feast which brings to mind the mission of teacher and pastor conferred by Christ upon Peter. This is a role which has continued in an unbroken line of apostolic succession right down to our present Holy Father, Pope Francis.

The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter was celebrated from the earliest days in commemoration of the day when the saint called “the Rock” purportedly held his first celebration of the Eucharist in Rome. The actual Chair of St. Peter in Rome, a surprisingly simple wooden throne at St. Peter’s Basilica, was given to Pope John VIII by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles in the year 875. It is now encased in bronze and is elevated above the far back altar at St. Peter’s Basilica, known as The Altar of the Chair.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI described this feast day well, when he said in 2012 that, “The chair is a symbol of the special mission of Peter and his Successors to tend Christ’s flock, keeping it united in faith, and in charity."

When speaking of a presider’s chair in a church, the word “cathedra” is used. Thus, the place where the bishop presides is called a cathedral. It comes as no surprise

that the notion commemorated has great kinship with a “throne” in a king’s court. But, its importance lay not in its material construction, nor if preciously gilded or expensively bejeweled.

The ideal of the presence of the presider’s chair is that it exists best at an intersection. On the one hand, the presider extends from the chair sacrament, teaching, and leadership. On the other hand, by placement and focus, the chair draws the faithful into those same things. But it is not merely a nexus of the moment. The chair represents an intersectional moment of apostolic succession as well as with the cloud of witnesses of all the saints.

While a pastor or bishop both participate in the symbolism of the presider’s chair or cathedra – the Feast of the Chair of Peter focuses on how we, as Catholics, view the necessity to Christ’s Church of the primacy of the successor to Peter, the Pope. In the scriptures, the Lord said to Peter, “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church” Matthew 16:18, and “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” Matthew 16:19.

The Chair of Peter is one of three great symbols of the apostolic power of the pope. The other two being the name given Peter – you are “the Rock” upon whom the Church is built, and the symbol of the keys given him as the porter of the gates of heaven. From the chair, the rock-solid firmity of faith, guides us on our way to heaven. Vividly identifying this, is a great gift of our Catholic faith.

Blessings to all

SCHOOL NOTES

Tuesday, March 12th 12:00pm - Lunch at St. Eugene in the Narthex 12:30pm - Keynote: Go Home 6:00pm - Dinner at St. Eugene in the Narthex 7:00pm - Keynote: Go Home

Go Home - The greatest evangelists are not men and women with microphones and Instagram followings. The greatest evangelists are the ones who are unafraid to simply “talk about Jesus” and be visible witnesses to Jesus Christ in daily life - at the grocery store, in the board room, in the pickup line at school, and in the parking lot after Sunday Mass. How can we be like a man healed by Jesus and “go home and tell our friends” all that the Lord has done for us?

2019 Parish Mission with keynote speaker, Katie Prejean McGrady

What does Tuesday look like?

Our students love going to the theater and have had the opportunity to see some wonderful shows recently! On Thursday, February 7, the 4th and 5th graders traveled downtown to the Todd Wehr Theater at First Stage to see the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Matilda. Based on the book by Roald Dahl, Matilda is the story of a most unlikely heroine. Unloved by her parents and belittled by her headmistress, Matilda uses her bravery and cleverness to take charge of her life and change her story. The show portrays the positive effect of good friends and kind-hearted teachers on the life of a troubled child. The 4K, 5K, 1st, and 2nd graders were scheduled to go to Cardinal Stritch to see a performance of The Ugly Duckling on Tuesday, February 12, which turned out to be our fourth day off due to severe weather this year! Fortunately, the teachers decided that “the show must go on” and rescheduled it for the next day. The students took a short bus ride to see the Stritch Theater for Young Audiences perform a new take on the classic animal fairytale. This past Friday, grades 4K - 8th grade took a trip to see Dominican High School’s production of the musical, Newsies. Congratulations to all of our St. Eugene alumni who starred in the show, including freshmen Inge Kozinski and Rose O’Keeffe, sophomores Sean Moore and Mason Sammarco, juniors Harrison Carter, Nicole Derse, James Laubauch, Alia Melloch, Sean Repinski, Mitchell Rouse, and Peter Ying, and senior Jarred Manista.

Two of our recent SES graduates, Caroline and Audrey Ferrero, were a part of the cast of The Little Mermaid at Homestead High School the weekend of February 8 - 10. Caroline was part of the Merfolk ensemble and Audrey was part of the Palace ensemble. In addition to their musical performances, these sisters were recognized on Homestead’s Honor Roll for the first trimester of this school year. Congratulations, Caroline and Audrey!
