75th Anniversary of the Community’s Founding

S eventy-five years ago on April 10, 1939, Bishop Rafael Palazzi, OFM, received Canonical approval for his humble community, the

Franciscan Sisters of Our Sorrowful Mother, a diocesan community in Hunan, China. The first class of novices was received on September 17th, Feast of the Stigmata of St. Francis, of the same year.

As the congregation grew and embraced its missionary charism and international appeal, the name of the community was changed to the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. Since then our blessed community has expanded to four countries and has touched the lives of tens of thousands of people as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary.

Serving God through education was one of the main purposes for which our Congregation was founded. We evangelize our Faith through our schools, retreat houses and parish ministries. We have three schools in Hong Kong, a hostel in Taiwan that provides catechesis for women who work and study in Taipei, and are involved also in parish education programs in Richmond, BC, Canada. In the United States, the Sisters at St. Clare’s Retreat in California help with CCD programs in local parishes and run the retreat ministry; the Sisters at Our Lady of Peace Retreat in Oregon, in addition to operating the retreat ministry, host the Institute in Catholic Teaching every summer, inviting international and national speakers to share their love and knowledge of the faith and Sister Mary Peter, who lives at Our Lady of Peace Retreat, teaches at St. Francis of Assisi School in Banks, Oregon.

The retreat ministries also seek to expand the New Evangelization encouraged by Blessed Pope John Paul II, by providing “a peaceful place to rekindle your spirit.” The retreat apostolate is instrumental in helping people to take the time to hear the voice of God in their lives, to find the peace within which gives them the joy and fortitude to live each day to the fullest.

Throughout the year of 2014, our community will be honoring God for all of the special graces which He has lavished upon our Congregation from its beginning.

Reaching seventy-five years as a community is a very special milestone. As we look back over the years, we are reminded of the sacrifices and struggles our Sisters faced in the beginning as they fled from Communist China. We are reminded of the dedication and perseverance of Bishop Palazzi in starting our community. T his spring and summer, the Lord provided in abundance for the corporal and spiritual needs of the women in formation here at Our Lady of Peace Retreat & Convent.

After a home visit to Germany, Ingrid Hemminger became a novice on the feast of St. Mark, April 25, being invested with a habit, white veil and crucifix, and receiving her religious name and title Sr. Maria Benedicta of the Cross.

On August 1, Sr. Mary John Paul ended the canonical and began the apostolic year of her novitiate. Later that month she was visited by a friend from the Philippines, Bishop Renato Pine Mayugba, DD of Laoag.

Our entire local religious community, as well as other people, was blessed with Bishop Renato’s presence. During Mass he blessed the medal of Our Lady of Sorrows that Margaret Chauvel received upon becoming a postulant, August 22, 2013, the feast of the Queenship of Mary. During the first half of August, Margaret had finished her candidacy with a “mini mission” to St. Clare’s Retreat and a brief visit to her parents in Ojai, CA.

Speaking of parents, Bishop Renato, while here in August, celebrated a memorial Mass in honor of the 1st year anniversary of the death of Sr. Mary John Paul’s father, Adriano Floro (August 10). May he rest in peace.

Garden: We had a late start, planting seeds in pots on the novitiate porch May 31 and transplanting them at the end of June. We made use of the second half of the community garden, the half dedicated to St. Clare of Assisi, and under her patronage, Sr. Agnes Clare blessed the garden. According to directions on the seed packages, advice from Sr. Mary Peter the community gardener, and our own prior experience, we were able to raise lettuce, endive, Pak Choy, and tomatoes, and planted 10 varieties of flowers, although only seven grew successfully. The radishes, carrots and onions did not fare well, nor did the Shasta, Alaska and Livingston daisies. And we did not produce the cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli for which we hoped. We were most pleased with the dozens of Sunflowers that grew, the Zinnias we planted were in even more abundance. Clarkia, Cape Marigold Daisy, Snap Dragons and Schizanthus Butterfly flowers were also available for the picking. Alas, we had to wonder and sing, “Where have all the Delphiniums gone, short time after planting? Where have all the Delphi’s gone, short time ago? Where have all the Delphi’s gone? The gophers picked them, underground! Oh, when will we ever learn? When will we ever learn?”

Sr. Mary John Paul, Sr. Maria Benedicta and Margaret had the blessing of participating in two events offered here at OLP—the eight-day Sisters’ retreat at the end of June and the Institute in Catholic Teaching (also called the Catechetical Summer Institute) in mid-July. During their retreat they were graced with the wisdom of Fr. Serge Propst, OP, who led them through “The Heart of Christian Spirituality: the Practice of the Presence of God”. At the Catechetical Summer Institute through the knowledge of four speakers, including Sr. Anne Marie, they grew in their own awareness of the richness of God’s gifts through courses in “Reading the Scripture & Catechism”, “The

Virtues and the Vices” and “The Passions, the Appetites and the Will”; “Franciscan Spirituality” and “The Life of Blessed Gabriele Allegra, OFM”; and “The Holy Spirit: Who He is, What He does, and the Gifts He gives”.

In addition to gardening, prayer, spiritual exercises and studies, the Novitiate had the opportunity for some special recreations. Through the generosity of a benefactor, we were able to participate in the annual Food and Wine Festival at Mount Angel Abbey in June. We spent time during the first two weeks of September practicing for a special performance in honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. Accompanied by Sr. Anne Marie on guitar, we sang “Catch a Falling Star” (adding hand motions and flashing lights) and “I Want to Praise Your Name” (adding percussion instruments) during community recreation the evening of September 14 (Feast of the Triumph of the Cross).

Sr. Agnes Clare and Eileen Bellamy joined us in these performances. Eileen, an aspirant of our community, was visiting from San Francisco to join in the celebration of our community Feast day. She is currently in an internship as a receptionist for a non-profit organization that assists homeless youth. She continues to work with the Laboure Society to raise funds to resolve her student loans, so that she may enter the community. Please visit www.LaboureSociety.org to read her updated story and learn how you can support her and other men and women desiring to respond to God’s call.

Please continue to pray for all the women in formation here at Our Lady of Peace Retreat & Convent and in Hong Kong.

The Benefits of Making a Retreat

Recently, we hosted our Fall Women’s Silent Retreat, an annual tradition here at Our Lady of Peace Retreat. We thought we’d capture some

thoughts about the retreat experience, so that those of you who haven’t yet made a retreat or haven’t for a long time, might consider making one in the coming year!

A RETREAT MASTER’S PERSPECTIVE ON RETREATS

“You are anxious and worried about many things.”Jesus Himself gives us the reason why we need a retreat: We are worn thin. In our busy and hectic daily life, demands are made on us from the time we rise until the time we rest. We are even a demand to ourselves. In the whole process, the area that universally becomes first neglected is prayer, our time with the Lord. It seems that everything else has priority, but we can always let prayer wait. Strange, since, in fact, it is the most important area of our lives! If we are not with God, where are we?

“Mary has chosen the better part.”Once when I had returned from preaching a retreat, a good friend asked me where I had been. “Preaching a retreat,” I answered. He jokingly said, what he seriously felt inside, “RETREAT? Why retreat? ‘Forward!’ I say. Always forward!” As old as sin in man is the mistaken notion, seldom challenged, that his way is the best way. How different it is from God’s perspective. If man had followed his Creator’s plan from the very beginning, in one week (literally) history could have progressed immeasurably further than it has progressed ever since. “Oh, if today you would hear his voice and harden not your hearts.” A retreat is a time - maybe your first time - to stop man’s business and slow down long enough to listen to God. Choose the better way!

“Come apart and rest for a while.”There is no time in our life, no stage of progress, and no amount of advancement that dispenses us from the need to “turn to God and listen.” When will man learn that as long as he insists on doing things his way, at his pace,

following his own impulse, the world will only continue to suffer? Let us each take to heart Jesus’ insistent invitation: “Come apart and rest a while.” We shall see what He wants us to see, and we will be amazed at how simple it could be. And what peace will follow...– Fr. Gregory Dick, O.Praem., St. Michael’s Abbey, Silverado, California

COMMENTS FROM RETREATANTS

“Fr. Gregory Dick was such a good retreat master last year that people came from miles around to hear him again, including a large group from Seaside. One woman longed so much for a retreat that she drove all the way from Canada. Women of all types attended. So, even though this was a silent retreat, those who needed to talk did so very quietly. I am more the contemplative type. I have attended several retreats at various places over the years and have perhaps only once come away disappointed. Different aspects of the retreats would make the biggest impression on me. This time, even though I appreciated Fr. Gregory’s conferences, I benefitted most from journaling and from the opportunity to go to Reconciliation. The kindness poured out by the Sisters, the staff and the young volunteers, [the Franciscan Girls] the delicious meals, the fellowship of the other retreatants, the gift shop, the lovely grounds with its Stations of the Cross, and the inspiring retreat master all contributed to just the right atmosphere for spiritual growth and healing. I am grateful I have found such a wonderful place for retreats. I encourage anyone who has not attended a retreat to go on one. Go with an open heart and great things can happen.”

– Diana Dean

“This past May, I attended a Men’s Silent Retreat at the Our Lady of Peace Retreat House. This is the third men’s retreat I have attended at Our Lady of Peace in the past 4 years. I have left each of these retreats feeling that I have strengthened my relationship with Christ. It seems that with each retreat, God has touched me in a way that I know it was His plan that I be there. The Sisters at Our Lady of Peace Retreat make this possible by providing such a wonderful setting for the retreats. It is such a peaceful place where when you are not in a Mass, prayer, or a conference, you can spend time in reflection while wandering on the beautiful grounds there at the retreat house, in the Chapel, or in the quiet and comfortable rooms. Most of all, they have provided some gifted retreat masters to help you hear what God is wanting you to hear. I am looking forward to my next retreat at Our Lady of Peace. I know that God has more to say to me.”

Our Lady of Peace Staff Book Review

S imon, Called Peter is written in a unique way that touched my heart and gave me a clearer understanding of who Peter was as a person, and yes he was an Apostle, but also a person who I could relate to. The book takes you inside 15 events from “They cast their nets into the water” to “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Each event is written

in the first person.

My desire to read this book was to understand Peter and be able to meditate on each of the 15 events. However, what made the book special for me was how the author made Peter truly human and how I was able to see myself in Peter!

Peter was a man just like us; he was a sinner just like us who needed to say he was sorry; and then try even harder to put his faith and trust in the Lord. In the end Peter becomes the Rock that he

was called to be!

This book is a simple read, and one that I will read over and over. With Peter as an example and a guide, we can see that with trust in God and with his Grace when our time comes He will be well pleased.

humanity, yet so close to Christ. Peter is the one we can always follow.”

The last several newsletters have contained a plea for donations to refurbish the pews in our Retreat House Chapel. Many of you have sent what you can afford to help us reach our goal. We are truly thankful for the support received thus far in the amount of $20,208. Recently, the Sisters conferred with an architect and left that meeting with an expanded plan to REALLY do what needs to be done to make the Chapel a fitting home for our Eucharistic Savior and a pleasant place for retreatants and visitors. Consequently, we begin our new fundraising efforts in earnest.

The projected cost for the remodeling of our retreat house chapel is $250,000. Following is a listing of things that will be done:

New heating system – Remodeling the two sacristiesSky lights – Choir loft improvement

New flooring and carpeting – New Pews and kneelers Reconciliation Room

Cleaning or replacement of stained glass windowsNew blinds – Sanctuary furniture – New organ

Upgrading our sound system (currently in progress)

“We invite you to attend our fund-raising luncheon tea on February 1, 2014, where more details will be shared regarding the renovation. This special event is appropriately called “Essence of Peace”.

Wine Tasting & Silent Auction

Thank you for your support and participation in our Wine Tasting and Silent Auction. A special thanks to Karenna Fields and Kathleen Gonsalves who co-chaired this year’s event and to the

mittees that transformed the retreat house into a magical place where guests enjoyed food, wine, music and conviviality! AN OLD-FASHIONED BBQ :

com

We extend a heart-felt thank you to all who made the August 4, Annual Family BBQ a resounding success: Scott Petersen and Greg Steiert, Co-Chairs of the Barbecue Committee and committee members, the Knights of Columbus representing 7 councils in the local area and the many other volunteers who worked so hard that weekend. Many thanks also to our generous donors with food, supplies and door prizes! We sold a record-breaking 1,000 meals this year. The pulled pork was a great hit—thanks to Bill Snyder, who spent the night before the BBQ tending three smokers. May God Bless you all abundantly! We appreciate all who participated in the Raffle this year. Your support helps with needed retreat house repairs and the maintenance of the grounds!
