T he 2017 Credit Union Access Plus Debit Card promotion came to an end last December leaving 22 credit union members a lot happier. These members won a total of $750,000 in a promotion authorised by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission that ran from February 2 to December 31. Two winners were selected each month. These members who qualified for the prize because they used their debit cards six times or more each month. Twenty of the members who won, from February to November, received $30,000 each while the two members who won in the month of December took home $75,000 each. The $75,000 was in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Credit Union Movement. December’s lucky members were Carolyn Gardner, a member of Manchester Credit Union and Romaine Pearce from Public Sector Employees Credit Union. The Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League organised the promotion on behalf of the Credit Union Movement. The list of winners are as follows: Your Credit Union Today Claudette Christie Communication & Advocacy Manager 1. Q: Can I send money from foreign to my credit union account in Jamaica? A: You can send money directly to your credit union account if it has that facility but the money cannot be saved in foreign currency, just JA$ equivalent. Credit unions do not currently offer members FX accounts. You can, however, save your foreign exchange with the Credit Union Fund Management Company (CUFMC) through your credit union. Call CUFMC at 926-7769. 2. Q: Can I access my credit union account from overseas? A: If your credit union offers an online service, you should be able to access your account from overseas. Go to www.creditunionsofjamaica.com and you will find the contact information for your credit union. 3. Q: Do I have to be a member of the credit union in order to get a loan? A: Yes. You have to be a member to borrow from a credit union. That is one of the co-operative principles that establish the difference between credit unions and other financial institutions. Only people who are members can do business with credit unions. 4. Q: What are the requirements to open a credit union account? A:You will need to first of all find out how much is the deposit for your permanent shares. Then you will need a government ID, proof of address, letter from employer (if employed), and one or two references from persons who are already members of the credit union. 5. Q: I am a member of a particular credit union in Portland. Can I use any of the credit unions in Kingston to do business? A: Portland Co-operative Credit Union does not have a branch office in Kingston. However, depending on the service that you need, you could speak with the management of Portland Credit Union, and they would be able to arrange for another member credit union to facilitate the service.
