The kingdeclares inAlice inWonderland,“Begin at thebeginningand go on tillyou come tothe end – thenstop!”

My veryfirstpresident’s

message to the Northwest WatercolorSociety membership led with this quote. On May 31, the 2010-2011 year forNorthwest Watercolor Society comes tothe end and adhering to the advice ofthe King, I stop.

“No duty is more urgent than that ofreturning thanks.” – Author Unknown

It would be a great dereliction ofduty if I used this message for anythingother than saying, a heartfelt andenormous ‘Thank You’ to all of youNWWS members with a very specialthank you extended to the magnificentvolunteers of this remarkable 2010-2011year.

We have produced twoextraordinary exhibitions; the 71stAnnual Open International Exhibitionand the 2010 Waterworks MembersExhibition - with one more, theSignature Exhibition yet to come in thislast month of our year.

Our events have included two worldclass workshops taught by two of thefinest international watercolor artistsand authors, Don Andrews and PaulJackson. The fact that both of theseworkshops were filled past capacitywith waiting lists, speaks to theirpopularity and excellence.

This year has brought us eightterrific and exciting general meetingdemonstrations. We have hosted pleinair outings and the always-eagerly-anticipated, fun-filled Spring and FallSamish Paint-Out camps. We haveshowcased members’ art at OverlakeHospital on a continually rotating basis.

A myriad of activities behind thescenes produced the seamless andsmooth execution of these events. Therewere ardent monthly board of director

meetings, absolutely countlesscommittee meetings, excel sheets andmail merges. Word documents becameas familiar and necessary as themorning cup of coffee. Literallythousands of e-mails were sent out, along with hundreds of messages andletters. We purchased extra minutes forthe scores of phone calls we madekeeping in touch with each other. Webrainstormed ‘trillions’ of ideas to grow, support, organize and advance ourSociety. We researched any and allthings that were thought beneficial; allthe while sharing that information, wisdom and advice via our website,NWWS.org, Hot Press and Facebook.

The two annual exhibitions alwaystook center stage as they called for thecollecting, sorting, organizing andjurying of hundreds of entries; thedesigning of gorgeous brochures, catalogs, cards, CDs, and presentationpackages; convincing munificentpatrons to shower our exhibitions withgenerous award contributions;advertising to the world all the thrillingevents associated with NWWS andcollecting the money, paying the billsand balancing the books, contractingfuture prominent, renownjurors/instructors; setting up, takingdown, trekking all our technical andcurriculum equipment; recording theminutes of all those activities andkeeping for posterity’s sake a historicalrecord of all things NWWS related!

Wow…and that’s not all!

There are those who made certainwe were treated to deliciousrefreshments on all occasions and thosewho cheerfully greeted members andvisitors. Fabulous photos were shot andposted documenting our events. TheNWWS Permanent Collection wasoverseen. We had one volunteer offer tocoordinate all the other volunteers!

There’s an army of those thatwillingly showed up for hanging parties, stuffing and stamping parties, set-upsand take downs and countless othertasks. The Society is greatly enriched bythe involvement of each and every oneof you.

TwentyThings IWish I HadKnown FiveYears Ago

1. The shadedside of a whiteobject is muchdarker than youthink.

2. A little palecolor in a white object will bring itto life.

3. Shadows are full of color.

4. The difference between theamateur and professionalwatercolorist is the quality of hisedges. You must have a mix of hard, soft and lost edges. It matters notwhat the interior of an object lookslike. It is the edges that telleverything.

5. An object with hard edges all theway around will appear pasted on.

6. A tree is not green. It is acombination of many colors. Atouch of red (complement of green)will bring it to life. (See Wiegardt onWatercolor – this edition.)

7. No matter how strong your darksare, they are not dark enough! (JoeGarcia). Nothing says amateur likea washed-out watercolor.

8. Your center of interest (you’re“what” - Cathe Gill) must never lieat the center of your painting. (Ruleof thirds).

9. Complementary color schemesmake stunning landscapes. Tryshades of blue, yellow and gold. The painting below employs thatscheme. Note the lost edge at thenose of the aircraft.

10. Negative painting can bring yourwork to life. Don Andrews is themaster.

11. Color is arbitrary. Value is critical.

12. Black is a dead color. Make yourdarks colorful.

Editorial13. Master your grays, both warm and

cool. They should be the majority ofyour painting. (Jeanne Dobie).

14. Rearrange reality. Place landscapeobjects where they enhance yourcomposition, not where theyappear in a photograph.

15. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

16. The best artists are the mostgenerous with their time. All aredelighted to help you.

17. Your first painting of any subject isa rough draft. Paint it three or fourtimes until you are happy with it.(The painting accompanying thiseditorial is a 4th attempt.)

18. Talent is a myth. It is thecombination of knowledge andtime with a brush in your hand thatwill produce magnificentwatercolors. Read everything.Watch all the videos anddemonstrations. Learn from anyonewilling to teach. Let your own styleemerge naturally.

19. Don’t take it so seriously. None ofus will get out of this alive.

20. Painting is not life and death. It’smore important than that.

SIGNATURESHOW IN MAY

The 2011 NWWS SignatureMember’s Show will be at the SeattleDesign Center Plaza building inGeorgetown through the month of May.This annual show is our mostprestigious and is held to honor ourmembers that have received the highestachievement that NWWS can bestow. You can e-mail digitalphotos of your entries (no more than1024 pixels in the longest dimensionand at least 72 dpi) [email protected].

The venue for this show is thebeautiful Seattle Design Center, which islocated a short distance from the northend of Boeing Field at 6th Ave. S. and S.Orcas St. The site is home base forinterior designers and their customers, and is open to the public on week daysfrom 9 to 5. The space we have plannedis a gorgeous setting that will show ourartwork to its very best. During theexhibition we will sponsor artist-in-action in the Atrium Building near therestaurant on Thursdays. Be sure to signup to participate in these events. If weget enough volunteers we may haveartists-in-action on other days as well.

Having worked for a number ofyears in the advertising business as anart stylist, and then as head of the artdept in an advertising agency, Jeanniediscovered the joy of watercolor. Shehad already been through WSU and TheBurnley School of Professional Art andwas drawn to traditional watercolorpainting while taking courses at TheLyme Academy of Fine Art inConnecticut.

Jeannie is a signature member ofNational Watercolor Society,Transparent Watercolor Society ofAmerica, Watercolor West, WomenPainters of Washington and NorthwestWatercolor Society where she is a pastpresident. She teaches workshops andclasses in oil and water arts onBainbridge Island. She is represented byThe Gallery at Bainbridge Arts and Crafton Bainbridge Island.

After working for a number of yearspainting in traditional watercolor, shefelt the pull of a more individual, abstract and mixed media style tochallenge her creativity. She addscrayons, pastel or anything that willreact to her watercolor painting. Jeanniefeels that too often artists get so caught

May Meeting Features Jeannie Grisham

up in rules and technique that theyforget to have fun and play. Jeannietakes old paintings or incompleteworks and adds to the originalwatercolor to see “what will happenif I do this”. She finds joy in theactual act of playing, that gives her arenewed passion and pleasure forher work.

“The joy in painting for me liesin the process of creating. As soonas I dip my brush in water, load itwith pigment and introduce it topaper, I’m in a different world. Istart painting with transparentwatercolor and continue developingdarks while managing to keep thelights. During this process I usuallyend up adding gouache to the work.It is great fun to manipulate andadjust the textures until the resultsare pleasing. The painting isconsidered finished only when itfeels just right. Any media, as longas it is water soluble, is fair game, and any tool I can think of to help

create textures on hot press paper is awelcome find.

“My demo/ talk will include mypassion for keeping a sketch book that Ican later use in my work. I feel theartist’s pull between realistic andabstract. I try to walk the fine linebetween the two then leave it to theviewer. I am trying to draw the viewerinto my work.”

Editor’s ContestThe single most enjoyable task of producing the newsletter is selecting the editor’s contest winners. It is also the mostchallenging. Any one of these paintings could easily have been honored. You probably have your own favorites. I selected LylaJacobsen’s for the ethereal nature of her watercolor. It spoke to me. Several of the entries, including the abstract, are from TomLinden’s class at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois. The second-place painting is Tom’s. Thank you to all who entered.

The Color GreenIn art school, I remember struggling

with a painting of a flamingo. Thepainting looked dead and I wasn’twell enough along in my educationto understand why. The teachercame along, looked at my feebleefforts, and said “Put more green, from the grass, on the underside ofyour flamingo”. Green into the red ofa flamingo? It didn’t make sense atthe time, but I took his word for itand the painting started to improve. On the second round, he said “Nowput more red, from the underside ofthe flamingo, into the grass”. Well, Iwas on a roll, did as I was told, andVoila! The painting snapped intoone of the better pieces I had doneat that time, all from a simplechange in technique.

Similarly, I frequently hear thecomment that green is a problemcolor. It goes flat in paintings.Theoretically, this doesn’t make awhole lot of sense as green is justanother pigment, so why should itgive us trouble? I think the problemlies in the expanse of greenrequired, especially for a

representational landscape painting.(I think if we lived on a planet whereall the foliage was red, we would besaying the same thing about red.)There is simply a lot of greenneeded, and color variation isrequired for visual interest. If a largeflat mixture of a green wash isapplied to paper, especially one thatis over mixed, then it easily can goflat and look pasty.

As in the flamingo painting, theway to remedy this is to add somecomplementary color into the greenmixture. Take a violet for example, and run it into the green mixturealready on the palette, being carefulnot to over stroke and deaden theindividual color bands of green andviolet. Or other times I will just loadup both colors from my wells, stacked on top of each other on thebrush tip, and make a swirl in thepalette to gently combine the two,but not over mix.

Another variation of this is toadd violet into the wet wash of greenalready on the paper, and let it floaton its own, into the green mixture.

Or, sometimes I will lay scatteredstrokes of violet on the dry whitepaper first, and then add the greeninto, or next to the wash of violet. The violet can be wet or dry, depending on the look I want. Whendry, smaller accents of pure violetleft untouched in a passage of greencan be visually stimulating.Regardless, the point is that a littlebit of complementary color canbring life to a color passage.

Note also, nature doesn’t boorus with the same green in everyfoliage mass. Some plants arecooler in hue, some are warmer. Sosimply varying your mixture ofgreens from different sources ofblues and yellows will also add thevariation in color passages thatdesign calls for.

I hope this helps out.
