Running your Lionel Dash 9 with a Lionel transformer

Transformer operations

Place your Dash 9 locomotive on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.• Note the pull of Magne-Traction between your Dash 9 and the

steel track. Magnetized wheels and axles increase your pullingpower (more than 25 cars on straight and level track) and keepyour Dash 9 on track while passing swiftly through curves.

22 Power up your Dash 9 with your transformer.

• Your Dash 9 is designed to operate on 10-16 volts alternating cur-rent. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-currenttransformers are suitable.

• DO NOT POWER YOUR DASH 9 WITH DIRECT CURRENT (DC). Damageto sensitive electronic components may occur.

• When you first power up your track, your Dash 9’s headlightswill illuminate. At this point, the locomotive is in neutral. Thisoccurs when placing the Dash 9 on your railroad for the first time. When your train is first powered up, the default state will be neu-tral and the default direction is forward. This means wheneveryou power up your engine the engine will remain in neutral, andwhen the power is removed and again applied, the train willmove forward. This condition holds true if the engine is beingpowered up for the first time or if the engine has been powereddown longer than five seconds.

Note!

33 Move ‘em out!

• Get your Dash 9 moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1remote or Lionel transformer. This sequences the Lionel 104 Ereverse unit to the next operating state. The 104 E unit alternatesbetween three states: forward, neutral, and reverse.

• Adjust track voltage until your Dash 9 moves at your desiredspeed. To increase speed, increase track voltage. To decreasespeed, reduce voltage. To stop the locomotive, cut track power.

• See table on page 5 for information on locking your Dash 9 in asingle operating state

A note on Magne-Traction

Your Dash 9 is equipped withLionel Magne-Traction, magne-

tized wheelsets and axles that helpincrease tractive effort during opera-tion. Because the wheelsets are mag-netized, take care to prevent small

metallic objects from attaching to thewheel sets and working their wayinto the Dash 9’s motor assembly. They can damage your locomotive.

Magne-Traction is not effectiveon nonferrous track.

Note!

Y our Lionel Dash 9 is equippedwith operating magnetic knuckle

couplers, a revolu-tionary design firstintroduced byLionel in 1945.

Lionel magneticcouplers react to themagnetic field gen-erated by a Lionelremote-controltrack section (avail-able separately).

Place your lo-comotive’s cou-pler trigger discover the centralcoil of a remote-control track sectionand press UNCOUPLE on the controller.

The magnetic field pulls the discdownward, and the knuckle opens.

One operatingtechnique favoredby Lionel railroadersis the “movinguncouple.” Press theUNCOUPLE button asthe Dash 9 passesover a remote-con-trol section. Themagnetic field willopen the coupler; theconsist remainsbehind as the loco-motive moves on.But be careful—the

speed of a newly uncoupled and movinglocomotive can increase dramatically.

Position your Dash 9’s trigger disc overthe remote-control section, then press“uncouple.” The coupler opens.

W ith SignalSounds, you experiencethe sounds of real railroading

like never before. Simply put, it deliversrealistic, and authentic sounds to yourmodel railroad. To adjust the volume ofsignalsounds see page 10 for location ofadjustment knob

• Diesel Horn. Press horn to producean authentic diesel horn blast.• Mechanical bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin theeffect; again to discontinue.

Case #2: Engine without power for less than 2.5 seconds

E unit off (switch in PROG position) N, Last-Dir, N, Last-Dir, etc.E unit on (switch in RUN position) N, F, N, R, etc.

With your 104 E reversing unit, position-ing the switch in the PROG position locksyour engine into its last moving directionplus neutral. Positioning the switch in theRUN position resumes normal sequencingoperation.

Your Dash 9’s 104 E Reverse unitThe New E-Series Reversing Unit con-

trols the direction of the engine. Whenthe reversing unit senses an interruptionin track power, it will cycle into the nextdirection in the sequence. The sequenceis neutral, forward, neutral, reverse....Track power interruptions are createdusing the direction control on yourtransformer or Cab-1, or by turning thethrottle to zero.

When power is first applied (or after a5 second power interruption), theengine will power up in neutral, alwaysbefore forward. A single press of thedirection button will set your engine inforward motion. This will help elimi-nate unexpected start ups, derailments, and crashes. Listed in the table below isthe direction sequence pattern that your104 E unit will follow under the givenconditions.

As always, a lockout switch is includ-ed to deactivate the 104 E’s sequencingfunction. (for switch location see illus-tration below) A new feature is that nowyou will have a neutral available evenwhen the reversing unit is “off”. In

addition, you no longer have to slow theengine by hand to turn off the reversingunit while the train is moving. Simplystop the engine, and throw the switch. The 104 E unit will be locked into its lastmoving direction, plus neutral. Evensimpler, just put the switch in the“PROG” position and keep power offfor 5 seconds. When you start, you willbe locked in neutral/forward. If youwant to lock your engine in reverse forany length of time, it is recommendedthat you reverse the spade connections(blue and yellow) on the top of themotors (see page 7). Otherwise, your“reverse” lock will become a “forward”lock after any 5 second power off.

NOTE: Due to limitations of the elec-tronic components, it is hard to predicthow each engine will function whenpower is interrupted between 2.5 sec-onds and 5 seconds. Engines will func-tion either as in case #1 or case #2. Thissolely depends on the tolerances of theinstalled electronics and is not affectedor caused by your power supply.

LUBRICATE WITH LIONEL OIL SPARINGLY

Lubricating your Dash 9

Help your Lionel Dash 9 lead a longand productive life on your railroad

by maintaining it properly. We recommend you purchase a Lionel

Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (no. 6-62927), available from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: neverover-lubricate (a small amount will do),

and avoid getting grease or oil on theDash 9’s wheels or your track. You’ll knowyour Dash 9 requires lubrication whenvisual inspection reveals dryness on theparts indicated in the illustration. Removeaccumulated dirt and dust before lubricat-ing, and always lubricate any locomotiveemerging from prolonged storage.

SPADE CONNECTORS

LIONELLIONEL

After removing the .050" set screw, place a small amount of Lionel oil (two drops maximum) in the set screw hole. Reinstall the set screw tightly, then back off one-half turn.

You can apply a mark of nail polish or liquid paper before removing the set screw as an aidin restoring the adjustment to the factory setting

2 cab screws

Your Dash 9 will require occasionallubrication of its Pullmor ® motor

armatures. If you hear excess noiseduring operation, or if the locomotiveslows down intermittently, you mayneed to oil the top armature bearings.

Start by removing only the sixscrews with brackets at the arrowlocations in the illustration above. Thecab can now be separated from the

frame, taking care not to pull on theconnecting wires. Remove set screwshown below, apply a small amount ofLionel oil (two drops) in the armatureshaft. Duplicate these steps for theother Pullmor motor.

Finish the job by reinstalling thebody shell. Align the frame bracketsso that they do not interfere with thetrucks’ swing.

Replacing your Dash 9’s lamps

Y our Dash 9 is illuminated by three12-volt lamps. During the course

of normal operation, they may requirereplacement.

Begin by removing the Dash 9’sshell; see the previous section on arma-ture lubrication for detailed shell-removal information. Carefully lift theshell away from the frame. Take carewith the various wiring assembliesconnected to the shell.

Locate the assembly containing theexpired lamp. It’s held in position by aretaining clip; carefully remove the tar-get lamp assembly from the retaining

clip, then gently pull the expired lampfrom the socket. Replace it with Lionelpart no. 600-8352-311, available fromyour authorized Lionel Service Centeror Lionel Service. See the Lionel Servicesection on page 20 for more informa-tion. Reinstall the shell.

Your Lionel Dash 9 is equipped withilluminated ditch lights. These smallbulbs (Lionel part no. 10-8232-009) arelocated in the pilot. During the courseof normal operation they may requirereplacement. We recommend that youhave your local Authorized LionelService Center perform this service.

Remove the Dash 9’s shell, pull the lamp assemblyfrom its retaining clip, and replace the expired lamp.

Attaching the snowplow and hydraulic hose assembly

DASH 9

T he snowplow andhydraulic hose included

Installation is as follows: using kit 6-22964 ,which includes two plug-in circuits.

Remove the cab from the chassis as shownon page 7. Unplug the circuit with the alu-minum heat sink bracket and set it aside.(You will want to store this in the static resis-tant packaging from the upgrade kit). Plugin the RailSounds sound card into the slotmarked “AUDIO”. (The sound card can beidentified by the large square chips/recepta-cle on both sides). Plug in the power supplycard into the slot marked “POWER”(Thepower supply card has the large coil on top).NOTE: Be sure these are plugged in corectly,or RailSounds will not function. Damagemay occur if the engine is operated with

these circuits in the wrong locations! If no other upgrades are to be made, recabthe engine reversing the cab removalsteps. Your engine will now haveRailSounds including horn and bellwhich respond to your sound activationbutton, and engine sounds which respondto the speed of the locomotive and totrack voltage. Other random realisticsounds will occur, listen for these. Foreven more sounds and command controlof your engine, install the commandupgrade kit 6-22960 (sold separately). Thenext section includes detailed instructionsfor this upgrade.

Your Dash 9’s Railsounds system—the basics

Lionel Railsounds is the most realisticmodel railroad sound system in the

world. Your Dash 9 Railsounds upgradefeatures digital samples for the ultimate inrealism.

Begin by in-stalling a 9-voltalkaline batteryin your Dash 9.This ensuresinterupt ionfree operationof Railsounds.Slide open theaccess panelas shown inthe illustra-tion. Connectthe 9-voltalkaline bat-tery to thebattery clip, and place thebattery in the cavity. Then replace theaccess panel.

When you first apply track power, the

Dash 9’s Railsounds system delivers anauthentic start-up sequence, followedby the sounds of the locomotive at idle.As the Dash 9’s speed increases, the

RPMs movethrough fourlevels of roar.Sounds returnto idle onlyafter the loco-motive hascome to acomplete halt.

To silencethe diesel roar(horn and bellremain unaf-fected), slidethe Railsoundsswitch, locatedu n d e r n e a t hthe locomo-tive, to the OFF

position before powering up thelocomotive. See page 5 for the switchlocation and positioning.

Install an alkaline 9-volt battery in your Dash 9. Slideopen the panel, connect the battery to the power cord, andplace the battery in the cavity. Close the panel.

Although Railsounds ispowered by track voltage, the battery is required foruninterrupted operation andshutdown sequences. Useonly alkaline batteries.

Note!

Discontinue locomotivepower for 10 seconds beforechanging the RailsoundsON/OFF switch position.

Note!

If Railsounds “drops out”during track power inter-rupts (direction change),replace the battery.

Note!

With Railsounds, you experiencethe sounds of real railroading

like never before. Simply put, it’s themost sophisticated, authentic modelrailroad sound system in the world.

• Four diesel-roar levels. Your Dash 9’sspeed determines the level of dieselRPM roar—automatically, if you prefer:idle, half throttle, three quarters or full-speed output.• MultiHorn™. A different horn soundat different speeds—a Railsounds exclu-sive.• Mechanical bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin the effect, again to discontinue.• Full control of RPMs. Prefer hands-oncontrol of diesel RPM roar? Want to“ramp up” RPMs before pulling out, justlike real diesels do? It’s easy withRailsounds. Place your Dash 9 in neutraland increase track voltage to maximum.RPMs will continue to increase as long asthe Dash 9 remains in neutral, eventually

reaching their highest level. Now, decrease track voltage to thedesired speed level, press DIR on yourCAB-1 remote or transformer, andhead out, your Dash 9 at full churn, just like the real thing. RPMs willremain at that level until the locomotivehas come to a complete halt. Experimentwith controllable RPMs—it’s a blast!• Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3-5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the Dash 9 telling you its LionelCommand reverse unit has just reset toforward operation. • Shutdown sequence. No othermodel railroad sound system shutsdown like Railsounds. Turn off trackpower, and after the air-release resetsound, you have two seconds torestart your Dash 9. If you’re donewith operations, Railsounds will com-mence with a realistic diesel shut-down sequence about two secondsafter the air-release reset occurs.

your engine. The antenna in the upgrade kitis not required.

This upgrade is made using kit 6-22960,which includes a radio circuit and an

antenna. Remove the cab from the chassis asshown on page 7. First, unplug the 104E unitcircuit board and set it aside. This circuit

board is mounted sideways on the main cir-cuit board, pull straight back from its mount-ing pins to remove it. Next plug in the circuitboard (R2LC) into the slot marked “Radio”.(same slot as the 104E unit used)

This upgrade is made using kit 6-22958,also refer to the instructions included

with this upgrade kit. With the cabremoved, begin with the front coupler.Replace the old coupler as shown in theupgrade kit instructions. Route the couplerleads through the truck following the samepath taken by the ditch light wires. Youshould route one wire on each side of thetruck. Once the wires are routed, install the

coil coupler leads into the white 2 pin con-nector included with your upgrade kit. Seeillustration below for correct installation.Plug the connector into the main circuitboard at the location show. Repeat steps forthe rear coupler, using the front truck as aguide. Finally, make sure the wires areclear of the motor and the truck guides.Neatly bundle them using twist ties foradded protection.

Coil Couplers Upgrade

It is possible to add oscillating ditch lights(when horn is activated) to your locomo-

tive. No upgrade kit is currently plannedfor this option. However check with anAuthorized Service Station (see separateflyer included with your Dash 9) or LionelService for details. The part required is

Lionel No. 691-PCB1-047 which installs inthe location shown above, with the wireharness and jumper removed. TheCommand upgrade must be installed andyou will need to reprogram your locomo-tive following the steps on page 19, usingthe numbers 6, 7, and 0 during step 5

TrainMaster Command operationsThe Command control environment

L ionel TrainMaster Command isthe advanced model railroad con-

trol system from Lionel. Your upgrad-ed Dash 9 is equipped with aLiontech Command reverse unit.

TrainMaster Command gives youthe power to operate multiple

Command-equipped locomotives onthe same track, at the same time.

TO OPERATE IN COMMAND, YOU NEED

A COMMAND BASE AND A CAB-1REMOTE. Find them both at yourauthorized Lionel retailer.

Place your Dash 9 on Lionel or Lionel-compatibleO gauge track.• Make sure track power is OFF before placing on the track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communi-

cations wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lioneltransformer or the U on any of your installed PowerMasters.

• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).

22 Address your Dash 9 using CAB-1.

• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. This command is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, whichthen translates your command into digital code. That code is sentaround your railroad’s outside rails in the form of a digital “halo.”All Command-equipped Lionels listen to this digital communica-tion, but they do not respond until they hear their individual IDnumber—in this case, “1.”

• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not trackpower—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels.Track power is simply like gasoline in the tank of your car—itgives you the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where togo or how fast to get there.

• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed withan ID# of “1.” To change the ID# of your Dash 9, see page 18.

33 Move ‘em out!

• Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your Dash 9will respond to your every command. Read on.

Tuning your Dash 9’s performance

MOMENTUMTrainMaster Command’s momentum

feature simulates the labored perfor-mance of a locomotive pulling a heavyload. Press L, M, or H (located underCAB-1’s removable panel) for light, medium, or heavy momentum. TheDash 9’s LCRU remembers this settinguntil you change it. For quick locomo-tive response, choose L.

BRAKING AND BOOSTINGThere’s more to starting and stopping

than just turning the CAB-1 throttle.Use the BOOST and BRAKE commandbuttons—they give you incrementalcontrol of speed and are the superiorway to handle grades, gradual stops-and-starts, and more. Plus, usingBRAKE in the Command environmentgives you a bonus Railsounds effect—the ultra realistic sound of squealingbrakes.(Railsounds upgrade required)

SOUND QUALITYTo achieve your preferred Railsounds

master volume level, we recommendyou adjust your Dash 9 volume controlset screw under the exhaust stack in theroof (see page 10 for location). Turn theset screw left or right to reach thedesired volume level.

For quick remote-control of volumebelow the master setting—for example, muting—use the CAB-1 numeric key-pad’s volume control. Press AUX1 andthen 4 on the numeric keypad to loweroverall Railsounds output.

HIGH VOLTAGE SETTINGPress SET, headlight will flash. Get

your locomotive moving to the maxi-mum speed you want it to run, pressBOOST. Use this to keep your locomo-tive from excess-speed derailing. Turnoff the high voltage setting by pressingSET, then BOOST, holding each for onesecond.

STALLMake your Dash 9 feel more respon-

sive by setting a “stall” voltage. Getyour locomotive moving, then pressSET; the Dash 9 will stop. Turn thethrottle clockwise to get the locomotivemoving, then decrease speed until thelocomotive just stops. Then press SETagain; the LCRU remembers the stallsetting until you change it. To clear stall, press SET twice, holding it for one sec-ond each time.

These settings will be lost whenyou assign a new engine IDnumber.

We recommend that you choose aneasy to remember ID# for yourengine. Some possibilities are part ofthe engine road number, your age,any two digit number that is notused by another engine. Write thenumber on a small piece of tape andput this on the bottom of the fueltank to aid in remembering.

As your fleet of Command-equipped Lionels grows, you’ll

want to give your Dash 9 a more indi-vidualized number. Choose from anybetween 1 and 99. To make things easy, use a portion of your Dash 9’s cab num-ber.

Turn the Command Base ON andplace the Dash 9 on track. Power up,then set the Dash 9’s reverse unit controlswitch to PROGRAM/LOCK (see theillustration). Using CAB-1, press ENG,the locomotive ID# (you select: ?), thenpress the SET button located underCAB-1’s removable panel. electricity, it is possible that yourLCRU could someday lose its setupprogram. The symptoms of this

condition would be unresponsive-ness in command mode. This can beeasily remedied by “reprogramming”your LCRU using the followingsteps.
