On behalf of the entire Northeastern University School of Law community, it is my pleasure to present our 2013 Report of Giving. It details the results of your generosity during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, and outlines the many ways that our graduates and friends have contributed to the law school’s success. Simply put, it is our way of saying thank you for enabling NUSL to adapt and thrive in a dynamic economic environment.

During my first year as Dean I had the pleasure of meeting many of you, and I have been heartened by the strength of our law school’s connections with its graduates and friends. Close ties are evident not only in the generous financial contributions but via the hundreds of individuals who attend our events, and the scores of dedicated volunteers who ensure that the NUSL community extends far beyond Huntington Avenue. Indeed, the ways you give back to NUSL are too numerous to be elaborated fully in this brief report.

In total, more than 1,200 individuals contributed a total of $1,517,291. Notably, almost 14 per cent of alumni/ae donors have given for 20 or more years consecutively! Our Dean’s Society, distinguishing those who give more than $1,000 annually, is growing and now stands at 185 members. And we should all pay particular tribute to the 147 donors who made their first gift ever to NUSL in 2013. Our donors include recent graduates and attendees at our Reunion celebration who returned to campus for the first time in decades. You inspire us with your support of the ongoing work of our students, faculty and staff.

Of course, facts and figures take their meaning from a shared commitment to Northeastern School of Law’s unique approach to the study of law. Our model, combining the real-world experience of co-op with outstanding classroom instruction, remains at the forefront of legal education. We are constantly working to ensure that our students are able to maximize its benefits. Just this last month, the National Jurist named Northeastern as the second best law school in the nation for practical training and the second best in the nation for public interest work.

Northeastern University School of Law’s ability to achieve its longstanding mission in a rapidly changing profession is directly related to the generous support we receive from graduates and friends such as you. For all that you do and give to enable NUSL to thrive today, I simply say thank you!

enDowmentof the schooL of LawThe School of Law’s endowment comprises funds in seven general support areas: student scholarship, co-op stipends, special purposes, including the Fund for the Public Interest; faculty support and academic programs; loan deferral and forgiveness programs; library and facilities support, and general unrestricted endowment.

Contributions to The School of Law’s endowment strengthen the permanent capital of the school, establishing a base of income that provides revenue for our operating expenses and special purposes in perpetuity. Endowed funds may be established in support of any special area listed above with a minimum commitment of $50,000. Gifts establishing endowed funds can be paid over a number of years and named according to the donor’s wishes. Additionally, gifts of any size can be made to existing endowed funds.

* This figure includes all endowed funds and monetary assets held by the university that are permanently available for use by the law school. It does not include funds held and managed externally by financial fiduciaries that are irrevocably designated for the School of Law’s benefit.

As of June 30, 2013 the market value of the law school’s endowment stood at $16,277,130*. The endowment generated $463,880 in expendable income during the 2013 fiscal year to support the general operation of the law school as well as specific scholarships and programs. Support for student scholarships makes up 64% of the total endowment with a market value of $10,410,744.

Founded in 1989, the Frank Palmer Speare Society honors alumni/ae and friends who demonstrate their generosity and commitment to Northeastern through an estate provision or other planned gift. Named for the first president of Northeastern University and the founder of the School of Law, the Frank Palmer Speare Society in fiscal year 2012-2013 included the following alumni/ae and friends of the school. Members of the Frank Palmer Speare Society qualify by making simple bequests to Northeastern, naming the School of Law as a beneficiary of a living trust, life insurance policy, or a qualified retirement plan. Other ways to become a member include establishing a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust, or a charitable lead trust with the School of Law.
