The sleek, predatory lines, long bonnet and gill-like air intakes of the Tiburon remind you that ‘tiburon’ is Spanish for ‘shark’. This performance car, slipping through air like its namesake through water, is a dramatic showcase of Hyundai’s advanced state-of-the-art technology. Our designers have spent extensive hours refi ning this extraordinary sports coupe from the precise combination of futuristic aerodynamics, excellent performance and incredible functionality through to design touches that pay homage to the glamour of earlier sports car eras.

Here is a vehicle where function is at least equal to its elegant form. Feel the space around you, and the power of state-of-the-art driving technology. Appreciate the dynamic sloping lines of the bonnet, which also allows for good driver visibility. See precisely where you’re going in the dark with projection type headlights, contained in darkly auspicious black bezels. Listen to the growl of the pristine dual exhaust system.

Sportingly sleek on the inside

Think of a sports car and you might imagine a tight cockpit space. It doesn’t need to be. In the Tiburon you are nestled in your incredibly comfortable sports seat but the sense of space is liberating. The contemporary metallic surround and look of the center fascia and instrumental panel bestows a sense of sophistication, the feeling is classic.

The elegant, luxurious interior design belies modern technology, such as the trip computer (in all variants) and auxiliary input for external music devices (in 2.7 V6 variants only). You can easily manipulate all controls while cocooned in your ergonomically designed seat, complete with lateral and lumbar support side bolsters.

Sophistication extends to leather-wrapped seats, steering wheel, door inserts and gearshift trim in the 2.7 V6 Tiburon. The ambience of the luxury interior is accentuated by the ability to create your ideal environment – climate-control is at the touch of a button in the 2.7 V6 and manual air conditioning in the 2.0 CVVT. Your enjoyment has driven all aspects of this remarkable car’s interior – including details in the 2.7 V6 like your electric chromic rear view mirror that prevents headlight glare from following traffi c.

Of course you want to share your driving pleasure – this sports car has ample room for four and you can still get your golf clubs or luggage in the boot. 50:50 split rear seats make for more versatility of space by folding forward. Style with built-in safety

Designed to be sleek and elegant, the epitome of a contemporary yet practical sporting car, the Tiburon applies the same high standards to safety. You’ll enjoy a strong and tangible sense of security driving this vehicle – a sense of safety that will accelerate as you discover more about the Tiburon.

The fl uid shape of this vehicle outlines a high-tensile steel body strengthened with numerous cross member ultra-strength beam and bar reinforcements for maximum impact absorption as well as crumple zones engineered to deform in a carefully pre-calculated manner.

Luxurious attention to detail extends to safety with dual front and dual side airbags, de-powered for a softer impact in frontal collisions. In the event of sudden braking, seatbelt pretensioners hold the occupant close and steady while load limiters release the occupant at a safe, steady speed, reducing the pressure on your torso.

Even diffi cult driving conditions can be contained – the Tiburon’s handling performance is enhanced by rock solid stability, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) which helps reduce driver understeer and oversteer as well as Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), which applies the optimum pressure to individual brakes in all braking conditions. And if you’re braking in a tough situation, you’ll have the confi dence of knowing that the Tiburon also features the Brake Assist System (BAS), with 4 wheel disc brakes. Brake Assist applies maximum force to the brakes during emergency stopping situations. These braking technologies are standard on all model variants and work in harmony with ABS for superior safety.

ESP – Electronic Stability Program

The Tiburon’s ESP system is an advanced standard safety feature designed to avoid serious accidents by helping you remain in control of your vehicle during critical situations. The ESP system achieves this by comparing the driver’s intention with the momentary vehicle behaviour. It regulates the Antilock Braking (ABS) and Traction Control Systems (TCS) accordingly to initiate the appropriate corrective action by selectively braking individual wheels and managing engine power. This stabilises the vehicle during emergency manoeuvres, keeping it on track and under control.

Full stopPower-assisted disc brakes with fl oating callipers are fi tted to all four wheels. The front ones are ventilated for additional cooling under harsh treatment. This combination provides ample braking, particularly as it is equipped with ABS braking as well as Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BAS) technologies.

Smooth, yet strongThe Hyundai Tiburon irons out uneven road surfaces thanks to its well-proven all-independent suspension. The front suspension (shown left) is of the MacPherson strut type and the rear has dual links and coil springs. The quality of the ride and holding is aided by the immensely strong unitary bodywork (shown below), which was honed by computer-aided engineering before any crash tests took place in the laboratories. As a result of all this unseen work, Hyundai Tiburon owners can enjoy their driving in safety.

Here is an engine that demands respect. Just add up the fi gures. All-alloy 2.7 litre V6 Quadcam 24 valve multi-point fuel injection, delivering 123 kW of power at 6000 rpm and a peak torque output of 245 Nm at 4000 rpm. Very responsive. The 6-speed close-ratio manual achieves 0-100 kph in an impressive 8.4 seconds while the 4-speed automatic achieves 0-100 kph in 8.6 seconds.

Likewise, the 2.0 litre DOHC 16 valve multi-point fuel injected engine with CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) produces some impressive fi gures: maximum power of 105 kW at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 186 Nm at 4500 rpm. Coupled with a 4-speed automatic gearbox 0-100 kph is achieved in a responsive 10.6 seconds.

You’ll have optimum engine power and performance in all conditions thanks to Hyundai’s CAN (Control Area Network) system. Surges of power are harnessed with silky assurance by the Tiburon’s advanced transmission system. Gear-shifting in the 6-speed manual transmission of the 2.7 V6 is impeccably smooth and precise, especially between fi rst and second gear.

Tiburon’s silky smooth automatic transmission offers the ease of an automatic with the hands-on driving enjoyment of a manual. The 4-speed automatic with sequential sports shift (2.0 CVVT and 2.7 V6) gives you the option of manual style shifting without a clutch pedal. This transmission also incorporates HIVEC (Hyundai Integrated Vehicle Electronic Control) adaptive logic, a computerised system that learns driver’s habits, recognises road conditions and adapts accordingly.
