Tourism Tidbits By Nicole Capp Holbrook

National Travel and Tourism Week is May 7th-15th. It’s the Annual Salute to Travel and Tourism in America, a tradition that began in 1984. Since then, the U.S. travel community has celebrated in a number of creative ways ranging from local ral-lies to proclamations and resolutions to local gov-ernment. Tourism plays such an important role in Florida’s economy. Did you know that there are nearly 1 million Floridians directly employed by Florida’s tourism? 85 visitors equal 1 tourism job right here in Florida. For each $1 invested in tourism market-ing, more than $9 is returned to the state in tour-ism-related taxes. In 2009, tourism provided 22 percent of our total state revenue. Here are some other interesting facts about Florida’s Tourism Industry in 2009:

80.9 million visitors 16.8 million in-state visits $60.9 billion in travel spending $3.7 billion in sales tax collections $455 million in TDC tax collections 968,400 Floridians employed

**Statistics are from www.floridastourismcounts.org Last year, VISIT FLORIDA re-launched the “Share A Little Sunshine” campaign to encourage Floridi-ans to give our economy a boost by inviting their friends and family to visit the Sunshine State. Each time you invite someone to visit Florida by sending a video invitation or custom email post-card through www.sharealittlesunshine.org, you are entered to win a Florida vacation package. The current drawing is for an Ultimate Florida Fishing Experience. There are numerous invita-tions to choose from (categories ranging from fish-ing to family trips) and each invitation includes information and hot deals from the sender’s geo-graphic area. There is also an option to write a message which is a great opportunity to encour-a g e t h e m t o v i s i t o u r w e b s i t e , www.SebastianChamber.com. Our website is a great resource for visitors. In addition to the Sebastian River Area Destination Video on our homepage, we now have a Greater Fellsmere Area Destination Video. Be sure to check it out! And keep in mind, the more people we share our state and community with, the more our economy benefits!

We open at 7am daily serving eggs, sweet potato pancakes, bis-cuits & gravy and much more. We offer generous portions of all of our items cooked to order!

Marsh Landing is owned and operated by mother and daughter team, Fran and Susan Adams. Fran Adams grew up in the restaurant business in Wil-son, North Carolina, specializing in the local fare of fried chicken and barbeque. A Peace Corp vol-unteer in the early 70’s and an elected official for 12 years, Fran has spent her life in the service business. Susan Adams grew up in Fellsmere, enjoying the rural lifestyle of the area. After high school Susan attended FSU earning her law de-gree. The lure of restoring an old landmark and bringing the world to see brought Fran and Susan back to the restaurant business where they are working to preserve native Florida cuisine and cul-ture and having a ball doing it!

For all you Bluegrass fans out there, we are home to the largest weekly Bluegrass Jam in the South! Join us every Thursday for some pickin’ & grinnin’. For more information check out our website at www.marshlandingrestaurant.com.

May, 2011 Beth L. Mitchell, Executive Director

In celebration of Mother’s Day coming up, a search on Google provided this gem:

“A Freudian slip is when you say one thing, but mean your mother”

and in a nod to all of our Chamber mothers, “all mothers are working moms”! Happy Moth-ers Day! We are very happy Nicole is back from maternity leave, and that we can share her with Madelyn. So, we have asked Nicole to share her knowledge of tourism in the Sebastian River area, and she will be writing her very own column. Its debut is in this newsletter, and we look forward to her feature every month! We have also added a second membership spot-light, for tourism related businesses. As with our cover spotlight, the only way you can be featured is by attending the Tourism committee meetings! We hope to see you there! We had a pretty busy month rolling out several projects simultaneously, including our new Membership Business Directory and the Greater Fellsmere Video. The Directories are in the mail to you, and you may notice we used new photographs that were submitted in the Face-book Photo contest we held at the beginning of the year. The video is now available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube, or better yet, on the SebastianChamber.com website. We will be watching our Google analytics reports to see if there is an increase in our visitor traffic. Now we are working on a redesign of the Visitor’s Guide, a walking and driving tour of the area. We print twenty five thousand of these every year, and based on all of the redevelop-ment on the riverfront we want to improve the information for visitors so they can fully appre-ciate all of the ambiance on the lagoon. This month our Chamber Members will be receiving a survey to fill out so we can receive in-put from them on their wants and needs. Since most surveys usually provide a small sam-pling of the membership feedback, we thought we would up the ante and offer an incentive. If you are a Chamber member and you help us out by filling out the survey and sending it back in, we will give you, free, a web page on our website for one year. That’s a $125 value back to you for your time and input. But some things are immeasurable, and we have mem-bers who already have a web page, and have seen phenomenal traffic to their own website by having a presence on the Chamber’s site. And its free for one year. Two events are in the planning stages for the summer, our third annual Grill Out Night is scheduled for the first Friday of August, and we are encouraging pineapple carvings this year. We are also planning a joint Business and Pleasure with our neighbor the Palm Bay Chamber, at Capt. Hiram’s. Good things are happening! Have a prosperous month!
