History of the Florida Artists Group

Since 1949, the Florida Artists Group has held annual symposiums and exhibitions in a different Florida city each year. Education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, curated exhibitions, demonstrations and other events, many of which are open to the public.

Annual Exhibit

All members are eligible to participate in the annual Florida Artists Group exhibition, which may be juried. In addition to the symposium, there are annual and regional exhibitions, events and opportunities sponsored throughout the year. The nature of these follow the character of the annual symposium, affording an opportunity to participate in different venues and bringing the membership together. Our goal is to contribute to the cultural atmosphere of our state. Each juror is an out-of-state artist, curator, educator and/or museum director.

Did you know?

Our first four presidents went on to achieve fame in the art world and their work is traded through auction houses. Our first President, E. Robert Hunter, served two terms as Director at the Norton Gallery in West Palm Beach, now the Norton Art Museum. Hollis Holbrook, FLAG's second president, has work in the Smithsonian as does our third, Willis F. Woods, whose Letters are in the Archives of American Art. Hilton Leech, our fourth and fifth president came to Sarasota in 1931 to help organize the

Ringling School of Art and remained as an instructor there until 1945. His watercolor painting, ”Montauk Harbor”, can be viewed in the Smithsonian. Founder, Alida Conover’s art can be viewed in the Corcoran Gallery's permanent collection and her works are traded through major auction houses.

Another Founder, Hugh McKean was professor, then President of Rollins College as well as an author and artist. He and his wife, Jeannette Genius McKean founded the Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park. Jeannette was a painter, interior decorator, and collector of Louis Comfort Tiffany art glass. They were entrusted with restoring the Tiffany Studios. Jeannette, established the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation in 1959 in memory of her mother, thereby providing us with our annual Best in Show award.
