Members of the profession and invited guests of

the Singapore Medical Association gathered on

30 April 2005, Saturday, at the Raffles Town

Club’s Dunearn Ballroom for the SMA Annual Dinner. The

Association was once again honoured to have Mr Khaw

Boon Wan, Minister for Health as Guest-of-Honour.

The SMA Council and Organising Committee were also

pleased that Dr Ho Yuen, the 4th SMA President (1963-64),

was among our invited guests.

This year, the SMA Honorary Membership was conferred

on Dr Oon Chiew Seng and Prof Aline Wong. The citations

were delivered by Dr Chee Phui Hung, another SMA Honorary

Member and a familiar figure at the Alumni Medical Centre,

and Dr Tan Sze Wee, SMA Council Member and Nominated

Member of Parliament, respectively (see pages 4 and 5).

It was also an evening of affirmation and appreciation.

The SMA Council decided to acknowledge the contributions

of the eight Past Editors of the Singapore Medical Journal

by presenting them with tokens of appreciation. They are

Dr Gwee Ah Leng (1960-1971), Dr Tan Kheng Khoo (1971-

1975), Prof Lim Pin (1975-1978), Prof Feng Pao Hsii (1978-

1987), Prof Chee Yam Cheng (1987-1995), Prof Tan Choon

Kim (1995-1996), Prof Kua Ee Heok (1996-1999) and

Prof C Rajasoorya (1999-2003).

Other awards presented included the SMA Merit

Awards, SMA Long Service Awards and the SMJ Best Research

Paper Awards.

SMA MERIT AWARDS 2005

The SMA Merit Awards, which were launched at the Annual

Dinner on 16 November 2003, are presented annually, in

recognition of the recipients’ significant contributions to the

Association or medical profession, social service to the

community, or commendable personal achievements. The

recipients may be SMA Members, doctors, or non-medical

professionals.

The recipients of this year’s SMA Merit Awards are:

DR LILY NEO, Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC,

and Chairman of GPC Health

The Award was presented in recognition of Dr Neo’s

significant contributions and invaluable services to the

community.

DR CHAN KAH POON, Editorial Board Member of SMA

The Award was presented to Dr Chan posthumously, in

recognition of significant contributions and invaluable services

SMA LONG SERVICE AWARDS

This year’s SMA Long Service Awards were presented to three

members of the 46th Council who have served in various SMA

Exco positions during the past 10 years. DR WONG CHIANG

YIN, currently serving the third consecutive year as 1st Vice

President, was 2nd Vice President for 2 years and Honorary

Secretary for 4 years. Dr Wong has served in the SMA Council

for 10 years. DR YUE WAI MUN served as Honorary Secretary

for 3 years, Honorary Treasurer for 1 year, and Council Member

for 5 years. DR TAN SZE WEE, who is also the SMA

Spokesperson, had served as Honorary Treasurer for 3 years,

Honorary Assistant Treasurer for 2 years and Honorary

Assistant Secretary for 3 years. All three awardees first

joined the SMA Medical Officers Committee in 1994/95.

to the SMA. The award was received by his wife, Mrs Elizabeth

Chan. Dr Chan, who passed away on 21 February this year,

was a regular columnist in the SMA News, and went by

the pseudonym Garfield . Dr Chan entertained readers

with his insightful and at times, satirical, but always

humorous views on the medical profession for almost

20 years. From January 1986 to September 2004, he wrote

88 articles. A selection from these articles is being compiled

and will be published as a book to be released later in

the year.

The Award was presented to Dr Myint Soe, in recognition of

significant contributions and invaluable services to the SMA.

SMJ BEST RESEARCH PAPER AWARD

The Singapore Medical Journal (SMJ) Best Research Paper

Award was launched in 2003 to give due recognition to local

and regional researchers for good research papers published

in the SMJ.

For the SMJ Best Research Paper Award 2004, 53 original

articles published in the SMJ January to December 2004 issues

were considered. The criteria adopted by the distinguished

panel of judges, Prof Chee Yam Cheng, Prof Lee Seng Teik and

Prof Tan Chorh Chuan, in determining the winning articles

included the following: (1) the paper with potentially the

most impact on healthcare; (2) most rigorous study design/

research methodologies; (3) comprehensive data analysis and

balanced discussion; and (4) data interpretation.

The winners of the SMJ Best Research Paper Award 2004 were:

First Prize – S$5,000 cash award, sponsored by Pfizer Pte Ltd.

Dr Hong Ching Ye, A/Prof Chia Kee Seng, A/Prof

Kenneth Hughes and Dr Ling Sing Lin for their paper:

“Ethnic differences among Chinese, Malay and Indian patients

with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Singapore.”

Second Prize – S$3,000 cash award, sponsored by the SMA.

Dr Teck-Onn Lim and Dr Zaki Morad from the Hypertension

Study Group for their paper: “Relevance, awareness, treatment

and control of hypertension in the Malaysian adult population:

Results from the National Health and Morbidity Survey 1996.”

award for the first prize.
