M24-JohnAdamson(UniversityofNiigataPrefecture)ResearchintoAcademicPublishing:EmergingTrendsandPracticesThispresentationexploresresearchdirectionssurroundingacademicpublishinginEFLandAppliedLinguistics.Researchinourfieldrequiresareexaminationofperspectivesofthejourneyintoacademicpublication.MultilingualscholarspursuingEnglishforResearchPublicationPurposes(ERPP)struggletonegotiatethenormsofpublicationincenterjournals,necessitatingresearchabouthowjournalstaffinteractthroughpeerreviewwithbothAnglophoneandmultilingualauthorswritingfromnon-centercontexts.ThispresentationwillexaminetheseemergingcomplexitiesinpublicationpracticeandsuggestthatERPPmustgobeyondtraditionalissuesofethnicityandjournalprestige.
1:45-2:30 OxfordUniversityPressFeaturedSpeakerM24-StephenRyan(WasedaUniversity)EmbracingUnpredictabilityintheLanguageClassroomLanguageclassroomscanbehighlyunpredictableplaces.Materialsthatworkwellforonelearnermaynotworkforanother;anactivitythatstimulatesonegroupmayfailtoexciteinterestinanother.Acceptingandunderstandingthisunpredictabilityisanimportantpartofbeingalanguageteacher.Conventionalapproachestothestudyofvariationinlanguagelearnershavetendedtoproblematizethisunpredictability,butsuchaviewappearsinconsistentwiththerealitiesofmostteachers’professionallivesand,assuch,beoflittlepractical,pedagogicvalue.However,inrecentyears,newapproaches,basedineducationalpsychology,havebroughtamoreoptimistic,pedagogicallygroundedoutlook.Inthistalk,Idiscusssomeofthesenewapproaches,showinghowtheydepartfromestablishedtheoryandillustratingsomeoftheirpracticalclassroomapplications.
