It squares them up and ready to go.... easier to maintain low SCC.

We have been using Udder Comfort practically since it fi rst came out. I saw the ad and read about it, clipped it out of the paper and showed it to our routeman to ask him to carry it, says Lara Wilson Shields of Le-Ara Holsteins and Wilson Family Farms, Worthington, Pennsylvania.

Lara and her husband Doug and her parents Dick and Shirley Wilson operate the 5th generation farm, home to 80 reg. Holsteins, including 11 descendants of Laras special cow on the sign: 6E 93 Sprite. She lived to 18 with over 200,000 lifetime.

We use Udder Comfort to grease up our fresh heifers. It squares them up and ready to go. They are more comfortable, sooner, easier to work with. We see better udder condition, and fewer problems with mastitis.

We apply Udder Comfort after every milking for the fi rst 3 days post-fresh. I love the texture and effectiveness of this product and the way it handles. This tool is in our protocol for hard quarters and fresh udder edema. It makes it easier to maintain our low SCC consistently around 80,000.

    Lara Wilson Shields

For external application to the udder only after milking, as an essential component of udder management. Always wash and dry teats thoroughly before milking.

    Learning as I go

Im not only learning about myself, but about these little people we made.

    I l l i b

About a week ago, my two boys were playing outside while I was getting supper ready. I heard them running down the sidewalk in front of the house. I instantly looked over to the front door where Maren often stands to look out the screen door and babble-talk to Tank. Maren just turned 1-year-old and is not quite walking yet shes a little wobbly and not as quick to react and get out of the way when needed. The boys have been really good about being careful around her so when I heard the boys run up to the front door, I had a quick thought to grab her but I didnt. A second later, I heard the screen door open and turned just in time to see Maren fall forward and do a face plant onto the sidewalk. Maren was in instant tears and Silas who opened the door looked at me with regretful eyes. Oh, Silas, I said sadly. He quickly ran away as I picked up my bawling baby. As I held and snuggled her, I couldnt help but feel bad that I hadnt locked the screen door. Maren was done crying within a couple minutes. She quickly wiggled off my lap and moved on to digging through the toy box. My mind instantly went to Silas. I knew he was upset and likely buried himself in his blankets in his bedroom upstairs. I have learned that sometimes my boys do things that maybe they didnt think all the way through before doing or sometimes its just part of being a boy and wanting to run in high gear all the time. Thats why when Silas opened the door, I didnt yell or shout. I could see by the look in his eyes that he already knew this was bad he felt rotten enough without me adding to the situation. That has been the most challenging part of being a parent. Im not only learning about myself, but about these little people we made. I am still getting to know their personalities and the best method to instill good behavior I want so badly to raise kind-hearted and thoughtful children. I thought having babies was dif cult, but Im starting to think that was the easy part. Babies are resilient and as long as you meet their basic needs youre golden. Its when these little people you made start getting personalities thats when life gets interesting. With a 6- , 4- and 1-year

old, I have a long ways to go. I look back to what my parents went through to raise seven children and I thought they made it look easy. It wasnt until I became a parent that I realized that my parents didnt know everything.

Imagine my disappointment when I nally realized that I, in turn, will never know the secrets to having a good family life, keeping a career and a loving husband. I think being a parent is more about believing in what you know and showing your children that its important to believe in yourself and have con dence in yourself. I cant speak for other peoples children, but my two boys are sponges. They see and hear everything that is happening around them. I have found that everything I do and say can be the most important learning tool. As Silas and Zander get older, I can see them looking up to Joe more and more. Ive been reminding Joe a lot lately that he as a father, husband and man who works hard but takes time for others can have the most powerful in uence over his sons. They see him hold Maren and give her hugs and kisses. They listen as he talks them through a dispute over their toys. Most importantly, they are listening and watching the way he treats me. Parenting is not at all what I thought it was going to be. Im a little nervous for the pre-teen/teenage years but my hope is that if we lay a good foundation, Joe and I will have a good start to get us through. As for Silas, I did nd him curled up in his blankets on his bed. After some coaxing, I got him to come down from his top bunk bed and sit with me on the oor. I told him Maren was OK and not to feel bad because I shouldve locked the screen door to keep Maren from falling. I told him that he is such a good brother to Zander and Maren and that they are so lucky to have a big brother who cares so much for them. He was still upset so he disagreed with me, but at least I know he heard me. After a little tickling and joking around, I nally got him to come around. He knew everything was going to be OK. And I did, too.
