When It Comes To Feeding Enzymes...

  • Don and Marlis SilverMonticello, Wis.Green County95 cowsMilk consumption per capita has decreased over 10gallons since 1972, does this concern you and how would you change it? It should concern the whole dairy industry and it does concern us because for manyof us the consumption of milk provides us with ourlivelihood. However, not only our livelihood, but thelivelihood of farming families for future generationsto come. Our family farm has been running for 150 years and without milk consumption, or in our case cheese consumption, our careers may have been changed drastically along with the career paths ofour children. I would try changing this by increasingknowledge of the agriculture industry as a whole in the youth all over the country. For a long time, there has been a steadily decreasing number of farms all over the United States but an increase in farm size, meaning less people involved in the agriculture eldand less people educated about it. One of my favoritequotes is by Francis Bacon, Knowledge is power.Somebody might ask why that quote is relevant tothis question. Well, I believe being educated in theagriculture eld is a huge asset because agriculture is the one thing in the world that has gotten us to where we are today. If this trend continues, how do you think this will affect the dairy industry? The dairy industry has remained strong, but has really changed throughthe years. People can simply see how strong thedairy industry is by going to World Dairy Expo inMadison, Wis. People go to Expo each year to seenew innovations and show the best of the best of thedairy breeds. There are so many people that thrive off of the dairy industry, and as long as those passionate people educate others with their interests and desires,I believe the trend will start to go the other way. What do you think of the effort to reduce sugar content in chocolate milk for schools? We donot think the sugar content should be reduced. The only way it should be is if the same genuine taste ofchocolate milk can be maintained. Chocolate milk is such an important drink in a childs diet, changing the sugar content could ultimately drop the consumption of milk for school age children. Chocolate milk is so delicious, why change such an important andnutritious drink. How much milk do you and your family drink? Ourfamily consumes approximately three gallons a week, split between the milk we produce and chocolate milk. We are also big consumers of cheese, ice creamand yogurt.. What is your favorite thing to have with a glass of milk? My favorite thing to have with a nice tall glass of milk is a slice of Papa Murphys BBQ ChickenPizza. Tell us about your farm and plans for your dairythis year. We own and operate a 440 acre dairy farmwhere we grow alfalfa, corn, wheat, and soybeans. Our Holstein dairy herd size is 95 and we raise all of our replacements. Andy, one of our three kids, has joined the farm and is the 7th generation on thisfamily farm. At this point, like any other year, we planto maintain our farm in addition to always looking fornewer, more innovative ways to farm.

From Our Side Of The FenceHow would you address decreasing milk consumption?

Michele and Jason SchroederCourtland, Minn.Nicollet County60 cowsMilk consumption per capita has decreased over 10 gallons since 1972, does this concern you and how would you change it? We would hope the decreased milk consumption would mean an increase in the consumption of cheese, butter, yogurt, and Greek yogurt so that the overall consumption of dairy products remains at a stable or rising level. However, if that is not the case, perhaps the reason is similar to what the beef industry reported about their decrease in beef consumptionaging baby boomers and a change in their diet. The reason for the decreased milk consumption could be the same.

With our involvement in our county ADA, we do know that the big challenge for the dairy industry is soda. We know it will always be a challenge to combat the advertising dollars of the large soda companies. With pop machines more readily available than milk dispensing machines, soda is probably purchased more for on-the-go people and, therefore, drank more.

Also, a number of years ago, we heard that rickets was on the rise. It was due to people not drinking enough milk which is forti ed with Vitamin A and D. The Vitamin D forti cation is required by law to help supplement American diets to battle such things as rickets. It concerns us that our American population has the easiest access to affordable and healthy food, yet can rank so high in malnutrition worldwide.

We would hope that our check-off dollars would continue to partner with businesses like McDonald's and Domino's to increase consumption of dairy products. The industry has seen dairy consumption increase at McDonald's through their cafe beverages and Domino's with the increased use of cheese.

Overall, our industry needs to target the person in each household that does the grocery shoppingusually a time-pressed mom with young children. Perhaps the industry needs a new kid friendlyyet healthydairy snack that ts into every family's budget and busy daily schedule. If this trend continues, how do you think this will affect the dairy industry? If the trend continues, we will need to work harder with our advertising, marketing, and promotional dollars to educate the general population about healthy and nutritious dairy products. Just like any commodity, if the demand for dairy products is not there the market for milk will decrease. What do you think of the effort to reduce sugar content in chocolate milk for schools? We think it's great. No matter what, consuming chocolate milk is better for you than consuming other sugary drinks or soda. We know that orange juice contains more sugar than chocolate milk. All in all, we need to make sure that consumersand especially school dietitiansknow and understand the bene ts of chocolate milk for a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Chocolate milk may have more calories, but it provides nine essential nutrients needed for healthy bodies. For some children, the only milk they may get in their diet is at school through a reduced or free lunch program. Unfortunately, there are still misconceptions among consumers about chocolate milk. How much milk do you and your family drink? Between home, work, daycare and school we drink about four to ve gallons of milk a week.

What is your favorite thing to have with a glass of milk? For Michele, it's several things including chocolate chip cookies, some kind of homemade chocolate bars, cheesecake, or a pasta dinner. Jason craves milk with chocolate chip cookies and chocolate cake. Tell us about your farm and plans for your dairy this year. Jason farms in partnership with his parents, John and Bev Schroeder. Together, they milk 60 registered Holsteins and farm 320 acres of alfalfa, corn, beans, and oats. Michele appraises farm land and rural properties for a farm management and real estate rm in New Ulm, Minn. Jason and Michele have two sonsAlex (5) and Aiden (2), with a baby due January 22. Several improvements were made during the high milk prices this last year, but limited plans are being made for this year due to low milk prices. However, the hope is to continue transition planning from Jason's parents to Jason throughout the next year.

April and Paul DamhofWillmar, Minn.Kandiyohi County80 cowsMilk consumption per capita has decreased over 10 gallons since 1972, does this concern you and how would you change it? Although milk consumption has decreased, we need to remember that our culture has also changed a lot during that time as well. Consumers have so many more choices available now than they did 40 plus years ago, so a decrease is almost inevitable. At this point, it doesnt concern us, unless of course, the trend would continue, and then the industry would have to review its options. Our best plan of action would be through promotion and education, and also listening to consumer concerns and suggestions, and following through. If this trend continues, how do you think this will affect the dairy industry? If milk consumption continued to decrease, it could potentially be a problem for the industry, in that our demand for that one product would be down; but there are other markets for milk that could be focused on. As dairy producers, we provide naturally nutritious and delicious products. Milk is de nitely not a one-trick pony. There is so much potential for dairy use...we need to be aware of what the consumer wants, so that we can grow our industry into the future. What do you think of the effort to reduce sugar content in chocolate milk for schools? Reducing the sugar content in anything is probably a good idea. The nutrition of the milk is not affected in this process, so if this is what the consumer wants, go for it. How much milk do you and your family drink? We have a family of ve, and use about two gallons of milk a week. What is your favorite thing to have with a glass of milk? Our favorite thing to have with a glass of milk is...cookies, of course. Tell us about you farm and plans for your dairy this year. We have three generations of family involved at Damhof Dairy: Pauls parents, us, and our children. We milk 80 registered Holstein cows in a tie-stall barn and raise our own replacement heifers.

Cows are more contented... better quality, production.

We like Udder Comfort for our fresh cows. We make sure all the fresh cows get their udders sprayed at least the fi rst 1 to 2 days after calving (after each milking). Some fresh cows we do longer, reports Lorenzo Cabral, manager of Brouwer Dairy, Portales, New Mexico.

Lorenzo has been manager for the past 10 years. They milk 2,560 cows 3x with a bulk tank average production of 83 pounds/cow/day and somatic cell counts consistently below 100,000.

For a long time, SCC was 120,000, he explains. We got that average down to 97,000. Udder Comfort is part of our fresh cow routine for 4 years now.

We like how it softens the udders. Cows are more contented, and they do better in milk quality and production.

We have always used Udder Comfort. It is the best udder product and we like how it works.
