Stuttgart — (NC) — This nation, which has a proud Christian heritage both for Catholics and Protestants, has become1 in the past few years the primary mission
- territory in Europe for Eastern religions
Moslems, Buddhists and Hindus are all laboring in Germany with varying, degrees of success, Thus far they have won only a
« handful --of-*x»nverts,- but-they have stirred up a great deal of interest among students and
•; foreign workers. It was the men who came
from Moslem countries to find work in German factories who first sparked the German interest in Islam- There are* about 120,000 Moslems employed in Germany —. most of theih from Turkey and Iran—and other 10,000 Moslem students studying at German universities.
Eight mosques have already been built In this country. At prayer services one can see not only foreign workers and students bnt also a number of Germans who come out of etui*
- oslty. or honest longing for jet-llgious roots. For many people it seems to be a fashionable thing to do.
In the town of Schwetzlngen, for instance, there is a mosque built in- the 19th century 4>y nobleman who fell in love with Islamic culture. Now a onetime unskilled worker named Abdullah (Norbert) Weisser has a congregation of German Moslems and holds Sunday meetings in the mosque with great success.
Not all of the Islam practiced in jGerman is orthodox. The Ahmadiyya sect which has received great publicity here is considered heretical by traditional Moslems. One Ahmadiyya congregation in Frankfurt is led by a former officer in the African Corps who calls himself Imam Abdus-Schakoor Kunze. The head of the Ahmadiyya mosque in Nuernberg is Dr. Mohammed Said, alias Dr. Karl Koller, an army physician during World War n.
