Welcome to the 68th Northern Merino Stud Ram Show and Sale. This show and sale is held at the Armidale Exhibition Centre, under the auspices of the Northern Merino Ram Breeders’ Inc., in conjunction with agents AWN Livestock, Elders and Landmark. The Northern Merino Ram Breeders’ and many Southern Studs come together each year to offer leading Australian genetics in ultrafine, superfine and fine wools to wool producers throughout Australia. This venue provides an opportunity for wool producers to secure stud rams of the highest quality. Not only is the quality outstanding, but a broad range of wool types is available and with mutton becoming increasingly important to producers, studs are offering larger sheep with more muscle development in their rams. Rams can be viewed on Tuesday afternoon, where Elders provide a venue for purchasers, vendors and the general public to meet and talk. The Elders’ Meet and Greet will commence at 3.30 pm Tuesday at the Exhibition Centre and you are welcome to attend. On Wednesday, rams are available for viewing from 8.30 am with the sale commencing at 10.30 am. Please register at the desk if you intend to buy. This catalogue provides you with details of all vendor studs’ history and bloodlines, their health status and the number of rams being offered by each stud. On the left hand side are the details of each ram’s micron, SD, CV and Com. Factor taken by the stud Principal during 2012 while above the pen is the current micron, SD, CV and Com. Factor and body weight. Stud Principals, agents and members of the Northern Merino Ram Breeders’ Association are always willing to help you in ram selection or explaining test result details. Please feel free to approach us if you need help or guidance during the show or sale. The NMRBA is indebted to the many sponsors whose contribution makes this Show and Sale possible. We encourage you to support these businesses during the year as a gesture of appreciation. Enjoy the culture and atmosphere of the Show and Sale. We are sure you will find the ram you are looking for during the two days.

Life Membership to Past President of NMRBA

At their annual general meeting in July 2012, Mr Carl Carlon was given life membership of the NMRBA. Carl began his term as president in 1987, drawing up a constitution that saw Armidale continuing to be a major centre for the sale of stud rams administered by a committee of northern ram breeders. This structure has continued over the years with some refinements. During Carl’s presidency rams sales were held at the Elliott Pavilion and later at the selling complex that was destroyed by hail. Carl said he “was very honoured to be president of the NMRBA and very grateful for the support of the committee and agents during his term and would like to thank the present committee for this honour”. Carl will be presented with his life membership by Mr Sean Ballinger and Ms Natasha Pearson at the annual Armidale Ram Show and Sale in February 2013.

John Teitzel Recognised by NMRBA

At the 2012 annual meeting the of NMRBA John Teitzel and his wife Margaret were present, to receive a special certificate and gift for John’s contribution to the Association over nearly thirty years. Mr Leo Blanch presented the gift and said “ that John has made a major contribution to the success and function of our annual ram sale over nearly thirty years”. John has organised many aspects of the sale, attended every meeting and has always been the person who was first to put up his hand for a job. Congratulations John and we look forward to your valuable support continuing for many more years!

Ron Rayner

Ron is widely known to many of us, for his dedication to the wool industry, his great sheep and his readiness to engage in conversation to explore the attributes of sheep breeding. R o n m a r r i e d Dianne in 1977 and they have two children, Jeff and Kim. He was the son of Jack and Enda Rayner who had purchased the property Glanna, north east of Gulgong, in 1934. At that time Glanna was 800 acres, the majority of it cleared by hand. Ron’s father purchased Mudgee blood fine wool ewes and rams of Dalkeith blood to stock the property, later introducing Bocoble blood to his flock. Further purchases of land by Ron’s dad, Ron and his brother John saw the enterprise reach 9000 acres. When young, Ron loved his sport, namely cricket, tennis and table tennis. He represented Mudgee and Gulgong in Western District Cricket for many years and represented Mudgee in tennis for a long period of time, with tennis becoming his real passion. Ron started classing the Glanna flock in 1963, when only eighteen and for the next twenty years learnt the wool types that were the most profitable for his country and climate. It was during this period he gained much experience in the production of wheat, oats and barley, farming up to 2700 acres of these crops. By the late seventies their sheep flock was producing 300 bales and their efforts in sheep breeding saw their surplus sheep highly sought after. In 1984 Ron registered the Glanna Merino Stud with 302 of his own ewes and 70 ewes from Merryville, then in 1989 registered his poll stud. His sheep by this stage were heavy cutting, some bolder crimping, soft and yielded well during the drought years. In 1984 tragedy stuck Ron’s family with the death of his

father Jack and his brother John within four weeks of each other. He had also lost his mother a year earlier. His son Jeff returned to the property in 1996 after completing school at Hurlestone Agricultural College. Ron has built upon his father’s foundation of Glanna, over the years purchasing the highest quality rams from Merryville and engaging industry leaders to progress his stud. (Dr Jim Watts from 1993 to 1997 and Dr Paul Swan) Ron has now down sized his operation to become a specialised stud operation and concentrates on sheep classing and consultancy work with his clients as his outside interests. He is very proud of winning each of the four years of the Orange Weather Trials with his 1991 wether drop. One of his greatest joys are his three grand children, two of whom are twins. Lachlan, one of his grand children, (like his grandpa Ron) is a promising cricketer! ‘Glanna Fine Wool Merinos’ is Ron’s life and an achievement he can be proud of. Pete and Jayne Lette

Founded in 1991 by Jayne Suthern, with enormous help from her father M o r t , t h e Conrayn stud sits in the heart of the NSW S n o w y M o u n t a i n s nestled between the village of Berridale and Dalgety, in the Monaro region. The stud is now owned and operated by Peter and Jayne with the help of their two young sons, Cade and Jamie. Pete and Jayne were both born at the Cooma Hospital, as were their sons. Pete’s life ran parallel with Jayne’s, both living their lives in Berridale and growing up on neighbouring properties. Pete lived at the Lette family property, Birkenhead, with his parents, younger sister and brother and Jayne on the Suthern family property, Crieve Hill, with her parents, older sister and brother. Jayne and Pete attended the Berridale Public Primary School as did Jayne’s father and now their sons Cade and Jamie. Although they had known each other from childhood it was not until Jayne saw Pete (handsome!) repairing a fence in the Booth Paddock at Wheat Hill that she realised someone with such great fencing skills could play a bigger part in her life. They were married at Berridale in November 1995 and Cade was born in May of 2001 and Jamie in November 2008. During their teen years and early twenties Jayne competed in camp drafting and excelled at cake decorating, a skill in great demand and appreciated for family events. Pete played League in primary school and union in High School. He was also a single figure golfer but has not hit a ball in the last 17 years. Holidays for Pete and Jayne, along with their sons, include travelling to Sydney, Canberra and Bendigo showing their stud sheep and enjoying the experiences.

Greg Fletcher

Greg is known to many in New England and is our referee for the Armidale Ram Show and Sale. He has also judged at many major shows and in 2011 was a judge at the RAS for the third time. Born at the Walcha hospital in 1952 to Don and Esme, he was the middle son between two brothers David and Lee. Greg’s love of sheep began very early in life when he would be found among mobs of sheep travelling to the Auchen-Dhu woolshed for shearing and crutching. Only by his blonde curls bobbing up and down among the ewes and lambs were his parents able to find him. Walcha Central School and later TAFE allowed Greg to develop his talents for wool and during shearing he honed his skills in the shearing shed at Auchen-Dhu, often slipping into the shed after school to examine the lines and pocket wool to study later. He further developed his skill in fine wool by completing a specialist course at the Melbourne College of Textiles. His father Don encouraged Greg to develop his wool skills and with that encouragement he classed clips skilfully and economically for many large properties in New England, including Lyndhurst, Europambela and Abbotsley. Success also came from his stud, Auchen-Dhu merino stud. Over time he won many championships for his stud ewes and rams. The highlight of the show circuit came when in 1996 his ram Minister was the Supreme sheep at the Melbourne Sheep Show and later the Supreme Sheep of Australia. His brother David and his nephew Will continue the Auchen-Dhu blood line. Greg is a man of many talents; he is a keen tennis player, enjoys great music and acting. He continues to class wool in New England, maintains a strong reputation in the wool industry and is held in the highest regard by his many friends.

Mr John Doak

John spent many years of his younger life in the shearing sheds of the New England, giving him a strong appre-ciation of wool as a fibre and a passion for breeding merino sheep. His childhood was spent a t “Boxmoor” at Bundarra. Aside from helping with the farm work, John was an active member of The Junior Farmers’ Organisation. John always had a keen interest in nature, especially native birds. He was School Captain and excelled in athletics, particularly the 100 yard dash. After finishing high school John took up shearing and wool classing. His interest in wool was further developed by exhibiting fleeces in local agricultural shows and helping his father Fred Doak as a steward in the wool section at the Bundarra show. John continued this tradition for around 40 years. He’s always valued the advice of mentors including Wilbur Porter and Max Endacott and is always willing to pass on what he has learnt to others. Away from work, John enjoyed playing rugby league football, fishing and shooting. In fact, he purchased his first Ford ute with the proceeds of rabbit shooting and trapping. Later many hours of spotlighting for foxes helped fund dates with Annette. Those dates must have been a success; they married in 1972 and have three children Emily, Matthew and Gina. In 1986, John and Annette registered the Emoh Ruo Merino Stud. Breeding large framed productive sheep that cut a lot of quality, soft, bright, crimpy wool is a cornerstone of John’s sheep breeding philosophy. “There’s nothing like the hands on experience of shearing and classing to teach you which sheep will fill the bales,” he said. “But it’s got to be good wool with plenty of length and character.” John has been a familiar face at sheep shows since 1989 and Emoh Ruo has enjoyed success at major shows in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. He’s also judged at major sheep shows in Tasmania, New Zealand, Goulburn, Canberra and Western Australia. John also takes great pride in exhibiting fleeces and has been rewarded with Supreme Fleece prizes at the major shows in three states. Exhibiting sheep is on the back burner at the moment as John and Annette enjoy spending time with their three ‘prospective sheep breeder’ grandsons at Tumut. Much joy is gained from long walks with the boys discussing the varied wildlife, trucks, tractors and cattle. John and Annette and their show sheep are greatly missed at New England Shows but they still find time to meet up with many of us at luncheon at Guyra or Inverell.

JUDGE PROFILES Mr Allan Phillips - Ultra and Superfine Rams

The “Glen Stuart” stud is located at Deddington in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania. It is based on Saxon bloodlines with infusions of Merryville type sheep. The studs aim is to produce positive testing traditional wools of a spinners type. The clips average is 16 micron.

Mr Oliver Wythes - Fine and Fine/Medium Rams

I am Co-Principle and Manager of Rockdale Merino Stud at Canowindra NSW. Rockdale

has been pure Egelabra bloodlines since 1937 and a stud since 1975. We run both Stud and

Commercial operations, along with a large farming operation. I work in partnership with my parents and wife Kassie. We have three children

Victoria, Marcus and Fraser.

Previously, I Jackerooed at Egelabra Merino stud for two years before completing an Advanced Diploma in Farm Business Management at

Marcus Oldham College, Geelong, graduating in 2000. Through this I completed a practical studies year at Auchen Dhu Merino Stud, Walcha in

1999. I then went on to work at Nerstane Merino Stud from 2001 – 2003 as Stud Overseer. Kassie and I then returned home to the family property and took over the stud and livestock operations.

I have judged in many situations, from the Don Brown Ewe Competition to local shows, most recently Cooma and Dunedoo.

NERSTANE MERINO STUD OJD Status

ABC Points: 8 MAP Status: MN3

Nerstane is offering three stud rams, Rule 19 March Shorn, with an average adult fleece line over five years of 18.0 microns.

Stud History: The McLaren family established Nerstane Merino Stud in 1965. The Nerstane Merino breeding flock comprises 4000 ewes with 1800 stud ewes. From 1967 to 1988 the only introduction into the stud were rams and ewes from Koonwarra Stud, Crookwell. We are constantly progeny testing other bloodlines using AI against Nerstane’s top proven sires, to try and gain further improvement. Stud Objectives: Nerstane’s Merinos are bred to maximise commercial productivity by producing large framed, heavy cutting easy care sheep bred in high summer rainfall. Nerstane’s wool is noted for its soft handle, long staple & deep stylish crimp. Our recent review and update of the Nerstane index has increased emphasis on wool cut and body weight to achieve considerable gains in both these traits – an additional 7% in adult clean fleece weight and 2kg of bodyweight at 10 months of age. The emphasis on bodyweight will increase early age weight gain while at the same time maintain as much as possible adult ewe body weights. Emphasis on staple strength, CV and WEC will be continued to allow Nerstane clients to improve wool returns and reduce costs associated fly and worm control.

MERRYVILLE MERINO STUD OJD Status

ABC Points: 6 MAP Status: MN1-V

Merryville is offering twelve stud rams, Rule 19 March Shorn, with an average adult fleece line over five years of ___ microns.

Merryville Stud was founded in 1903 by the late Sir Walter Merriman and is in the unique position of having maintained management, selection and classing in a father/son relationship for the last 110 years. While recent years have continued to deliver many highlights and records to the stud, all of these were smashed by the stud’s success in 2010. Never before has any stud won the supreme and all four champions at Armidale or the supreme and all three champions at Mudgee. The best was yet to come with Merryville ultimately leaving the 2010 Sydney Royal by breaking the show and the stud’s own Sydney record by not only showing the Supreme Merino and winning the Stonehaven Cup but also bagging a total of 37 broad ribbons which included those for 7 grand champions. In April 2011 the stud claimed its 25th Stonehaven Cup at Sydney Royal, took out the most successful superfine & fine wool exhibitor award for the 29th time & the most successful March-shorn fine to medium wool exhibitor award for the 33rd time. At Sydney Royal in April 2012, Merryville claimed the most successful superfine and fine wool exhibitor award for the 30th time since 1973. Merryville rams are available throughout the year at all major multi-vendor sales as well as the stud’s on-property ram sale on Friday 13th September 2013. Flock rams are also available from mid September each year. Enquiries can be directed to Wal Merriman 02 6385 3333, George Merriman 02 6385 3282 or your agent.

Rams of the same blood were used until 1944 when Merryville blood was introduced and continued since that time. Bocoble sheep are noted for both quality and quantity of their wool, shown by an outstanding show record with both sheep and wool. The studs long term adult average micron is 17.5.

Egelabra is offering three stud rams, Rule 19 March Shorn, with an average adult fleece line over five years of 20.1

Egelabra Stud is one of the oldest pure Merino studs in Australia. The sheep are noted for their high yielding heavy cutting fleece; bright white, well nourished wool. This wool is extremely popular in higher rainfall areas with a high resistance to fleece rot and fly strike. Egelabra sheep have been line bred for over 125 years, no outside blood has been introduced, which guarantees they will breed true-to-type. They have an excellent eye muscle depth which is well above the Australian Merino average. All these traits have led Egelabra Bloodline sheep to be in huge demand in recent years selling at premium prices.

KURRAJONG PARK STUD OJD Status

ABC Points: 5 MAP Status: Prot. Area

Kurrajong Park is offering four stud rams, Rule 19 March Shorn, with an average adult fleece line over five years of 18.5 microns.

As Kurrajong Park Merino Stud moves into its 75th year of breeding, aims of the stud have remained consistently high, breeding sheep of superior constitution and wool quality. With marketplace and client demand we have endeavoured to breed wools of stylish character, long staple and soft handling. The stud’s sire selection is paramount to maintain our heavy frame and wool cut. Sire Selection and purchases in 2003 have included:

Ringmaster Merryville Ram for $14,000 at Armidale Ram Sale. A ’99 syndicate Roseville Park Ram for $11,000 at Dubbo Show and Ram Sale. 2006 Roseville Park Dubbo $18,000

The Glanna flock was commenced 1934, by the late Jack Rayner, and rams from Bocoble were used exclusively. In 1984 and 1985 ewes from the “Glanna” flock were passed by official inspection for registration of the Stud. Since 1984, 14 Merryville Stud rams have been introduced into the Stud. The Stud now has 1620 stud ewes mated in 2011 (including 300 poll stud ewes) and over 90% of these ewes are mated to Glanna bred rams. The Supreme Champion at the 2000 Mudgee ram Sale was purchased by Glanna from Merryville for $20,000. The ram being from the Ringmaster Superior 12th family. Another Merryville Superfine Family (Ringmaster 35th) stud ram was purchased at Armidale in 2003 for $7000. “Glanna” wethers came first for the fourth consecutive year at the Australian National field Days Wether Trial at Orange in November, 1996, in the Fine Wool Section and highest overall of the 40 teams of 15 wethers from 6 states of Australia. Glanna breeds rams in both fine and bold crimping families and are being successfully bred in many areas of NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Flinders Island. For a period of six years Glanna and Glanna Poll was selling an average of 500 rams per season, but the last four years has reduced considerably with a shrinking industry.

MAISTER’S SWAMP MERINO STUD OJD Status

ABC Points: 7 MAP Status: MN3

Maister’s Swamp is offering four stud rams, Rule 19 March Shorn, with an average adult fleece line over five years of 17.8 microns.

The breeding of Merino sheep on Maister’s Swamp started over 45 years ago, and in 1991 Maister’s Swamp Merino Stud was registered. In 2000 Maister’s Swamp Poll Merino Stud was also registered. Now with Merryville and Glanna stud sires both studs have created a ewe family structured stud, with distinct sheep and wool families, such as Ultrafines, Superfines, Finewools and Polls, which we believe can give sheep and wool producers the flexability to select genetics from a stable but prepotent stud, that will deliver consistent and predictable results. 2011 joined stud ewe shearing results 6.2kgs at 17.7 micron average.

Hillcreston is offering two stud ram, Rule 19 March Shorn, with an average adult fleece line over five years of 16.8 microns.

Hillcreston Merino Stud was founded in 1910 when the Picker Brothers purchased Collaroy blood ewes from G.D. Hay, ‘Goonoogla’, Bigga, NSW. In 1925 Sam Picker acquired a portion of the flock from his father and from that year until 1954 only ‘Merryville’, Flock No.56 rams were introduced. Hillcreston Park has continued to set the same high standards that has been set in the past by our father and grandfather. Our aim is to produce larger framed sheep with a long white staple, while still holding our traditional 1PP type wool. We believe with the current meat market trends a larger frame sheep is required while still holding our traditional type wool. In July 1992 Hillcreston Park Poll Stud was registered, Flock No.RM 1161, after the purchase of Super Bute, a $10,000 buy at Melbourne Sheep Show and Sale in 1989 from Mt Bute Poll Stud of Linton, Victoria. In December 1989, 20 stud ewes were purchased from Mr Bute Poll Stud and 30 stud ewes from Hillcreston to raise the stud ewes to 50. In 2009 a 15 micron Stud Poll ram was purchased from Greenlands Stud and is breeding very well.
