Squash Report - 2018/20192018-19 has been a positive

year for the Squash division. Membership slowly increased through 2017-18 and this trend has continued with numbers growing throughout the year. This is positive for the sport and with the area growing in population, this growth is only expected to increase.

The Junior club saw large growth last year with club nights reaching capacity. The numbers have remained strong throughout this year. Club member Nigel Leakey ran the Junior division and was a major component to the growth and stability. Nigel took an overseas contract from February and in his absence, Nigel’s wife Caroline took over the running which has been fantastic and provided stability for the juniors. The junior club is running near capacity.

Congratulations to Anne Leakey and Ashlee Pepper who were both selected for Squash New Zealand squads. For a small club like ours, having 2 juniors earning national selection is an amazing achievement.

Anne Leakey was selected to represent the winning New Zealand Secondary Schools team at the end of 2018 in the secondary school’s test series vs Australia. She is currently ranked number 3 in the under 15s in Auckland and has a National ranking of number 5 in the same age group. Anne also claimed the most improved Junior Girl in Auckland award at the region’s

prize giving which is the second year in a row a Red Beach member has claimed this award after Ashlee won it the previous year.

Ashlee Pepper was selected to represent the winning Auckland Junior Team at the National Teams competition and was also selected in the Auckland team for the Junior Quadrangular event vs Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Northland. Ashlee and her partner finished in 3rd place at the National Doubles Championship which was an open event. She is currently ranked number 1 in Auckland for the under 17 age group and ranked 6th nationally.

Kelsey Beet is another Junior from our club who has made improvements and is currently ranked 8th in the under 19 age group.

The club’s tournaments were also very successful. The Red Beach Squash Club Open Tournament on 8-10 February 2019 was again very well supported with the open division stronger than the previous year. The club had enough A Grade entries to have both a men’s and women’s A grade section with Commonwealth Games squad members competing. The final of the Men’s Open Division was between Joel Arscott and Sion Wiggen with Joel taking out the final in three games. The final of the Women’s Open Division was between two New Zealand reps Abbie Palmer and Ellie Epkie with Ellie taking out the win.

The season’s Junior tournament - “The Double Dot Squash Junior Series” on May 6 - was also a huge success. The one-day tournament attracted over 50 entries which were great for an Auckland Junior tournament and capacity for a club of our size.

Last year the club only had Masters interclub teams competing in the Auckland competition. This year has seen an increase in teams with teams competing in both the Open and Masters divisions.

The Social Squash League has remained a very popular competition with club members enjoying the competitive games without having to drive around the congested Auckland roads. It has also been fantastic for growing the club interaction and culture.

The club continues to maintain a strong link to schools in the district and grow the sport in the area. Orewa College has 50 players competing in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition, of which the Red Beach courts are “home”.

‘threepeat’ in winning the Northern Region overall points We pride ourselves on our continued investment in providing the best possible gear for our Juniors and this is emphasised by our second round of new club boards into the gear shed as part of our three year objective to refresh our aging fleet of boards and tubes. Our uniform approach to club boards has meant that management and identification of boards has improved significantly.

One of the many challenges for gear management is the harsh nature of the environment and the pressure of the surf on this equipment and so repairs and maintenance is an area that we need to continually focus on. I want to thank the ongoing efforts of Morgan Tyne as Gear Steward in the management of boards and equipment.

FINANCEThe Junior division finished

the year with an end-of-year cash on hand balance of $23,300 and are well positioned for the coming season. This is after investments into fibreglass boards, foam boards, lifejackets, helmets and other beach equipment totalling $32,727 for the season as per plan.

Income and Expenses were largely as expected with the notable exception of any funding grants specifically for the Junior division from external agencies. Also less income from our board leasing programme with the increase of club provided boards which is expected, and is a positive shift for our members.

New areas of investment this season included a shift to marketing and communication to new and existing members. There was increased investment in sports coaching and a new initiative around Friday night team dinners which brought members and their families into the club.

FINANCIAL INVESTMENT INTO THE COMMUNITY

We are seeking financial assistance from sponsors to continue the positive impact of our community programme and we thank our existing sponsors for their continued support. If you have a business that can help the club in some way, please come forward as your assistance will be appreciated. We are a large organisation with a wide scope of engagement.

Thanks to Ange Moore for managing sponsorship for the club and to all those who have helped with time and effort in supporting our fundraising initiatives.

Thanks also go out to Cecilia Tyne who has been leading our fundraising efforts and in particular our fundraising Sunday programme over the past 3 years. CC is stepping down from our management team this year after an awesome contribution of time and effort.

SPECIAL THANKSThe success of our Junior

programme at Red Beach doesn’t just happen; it’s a result of our voluntary army of Junior parents who get in and help out as coaches, managers, Water Safety, BBQ operators and surf

officials. Without our volunteers our Juniors would not have the environment they enjoy today.

A special thanks to our Junior management team who put in many hours to provide the structure and delivery of our programme: Cecilia Tyne (Fundraising), Brendan Smith (Community Engagement), Sidah Russell (Communications & Marketing), Caroline Anderson (Sport), Toni Rolston (Lifesaving Education), Morgan Tyne (Gear Steward), Jo Meban (Officials Manager), Kirsty Rutledge-Malyon (Junior Surf Coordinator) and Kelly O’Dea (Junior Division Secretary).

Thanks also to Debra Cairns as our Club Administrator and Colleen Murphy who organises our BBQ set-up on Sunday mornings.

And finally, a thanks to our head coach Jack Gavin and his team of sports coaches from the Senior division. The initiative of our Senior team re-engaging into the Junior division as mentors and sport coaches has been very successful and is well received by our Juniors, setting us up for an exciting future.

Thanks for a great season and I look forward to seeing you on the beach again soon.

Richard Rogers, ChairmanJuniorSurf Committee

The club’s Pub to Club paddle in September gave the 2018-19 season a kick-start. Starting at Puhoi, the event involved 70 club members, 55 of whom paddled to Red Beach on skis, boards and in surf canoes.

JuniorSurf Chairman’s ReportIt’s been an historic season

for Red Beach Junior Surf with a near-record membership. We are extremely encouraged by the growth in our younger age groups and it bodes well for future lifeguards and club membership.

In continuing with the theme of success we sent another large group of 29 Rookie lifeguards into our Senior division after completing the Rookie programme led by Helen Person, Cecilia Tyne and Megan McKenzie. Our Rookies also managed to place 1st and fourth in the Northern Region Rookie Challenge at Mangawhai Heads. The Rookie programme combines sport, lifesaving and leadership with the feedback from this season’s Rookie Camp at Muriwai suggesting that this combination is a lot of fun and rewarding for all involved.

An objective for this season’s Junior Surf Management team was to inject a structured layer of lifesaving into our younger age groups before they reach the Rookie level so as to create some balance with sport. This work in progress was evident with a greater focus on our Surf Skills certificate programme and an injection of lifesaving experience events and resources/games scattered throughout the season. The Management team has also re-structured to support this objective alongside our sport pillar with deliverables in both. This balance is an ongoing

challenge so we can have as much fun as possible with our learning and to be able to demonstrate these skills in life and at events.

LIFESAVING EDUCATION A greater focus on lifesaving

and beach/surf education has been injected into our Junior Surf programme and, as a result, all those who achieved their surf education award were presented with a certificate at the end-of-season prize giving. The Rookie team members (last year of Junior Surf) were also presented with their Rookie Lifeguard Award and are now positioned to enter the Senior division to qualify for the Surf Lifeguard Award. Our objective is to lead the region in our focus on a structured high performing programme for our 4-14 year old members.

As a Junior division we also encourage our junior parents to either refresh as an ex-lifeguard or to qualify as a new lifeguard so as to not only patrol our beaches but to also support our Junior members in water safety. Red Beach Surf Club is a family orientated club and we encourage everyone to get involved.

MANGAWHAI CAMPBuilding on life experiences,

our Mangawhai Camp with well over 100 Juniors on site has to be one of the best Junior camps in the country. Each year this 5-day camp just keeps getting better and it finishes with the “Survivor Competition” for all age groups.

As a club we saturate the area with our team members making their way around activities and challenges which bring out the best in them and, for as long as I can remember, the team that wins always surprises by being the best to unlock team work. Special thanks to Troy and Caroline Anderson, Brendon Rutledge-Malyon and Teresa Russell for running Survivor and to Anita Savage as our Camp Coordinator.

JUNIOR SPORT Red Beach won both Northern Region surf titles at the Northern Region Championships this year at Omaha, taking out the Junior Championships Points Trophy (overall points) and regaining the Cath and Eddie Millar Cup. This followed on from a strong showing in the Northern Region carnivals and National Pool Champs.

Our Junior members also competed in the Eastern Regional Championship in Whangamata and then attended the National event (Oceans ‘19) at Mount Maunganui. The travelling team to Oceans ‘19 had the gear and the attitude to represent the club to the best of their ability and there were some great personal and team results. Overall Red Beach placed fourth in New Zealand and the feedback from those competing and spectating was hugely positive.

Surf Canoe ReportThe club’s surf canoe

crews have had a fantastic season and this wouldn’t have been achievable without the generosity of Kevin Cornish (Cornish Truck & Van) and Jan Saull (Brin Wilson Boats). The canoe division would like to thank them for their contributions. We would have struggled to have such a successful season without their support as they helped keep our aging fleet transportable and afloat.

Our season started with the annual Canoe Training Day at Red Beach. We saw a great turnout with canoe crews from the Northern Region taking part.

In early January, the efforts of our canoe crews helped Red Beach retain the Owen Chapman Cup. We enjoyed wins from the Red Nicks team in the open men, Rockin’ Reds in the open women and the Red Hot Chillis in the U19 women’s division.

For the first time at any carnival an U16 division for canoes was introduced. Hopefully this will become a regular event at more carnivals as canoe division looks to grow the sport with young athletes. One of our new crews, the Lemons competed in their first season together and finished second in the U16 women’s division.

Just one of the Red Beach canoe crews, the Red Hot Chillis, made the long trip to the

ERCs in Gisborne. Flying the club colours they competed strongly to secure a second in both the short and long course events, signalling their intentions for the rest of the season.

The Northern Region Championships at Omaha was a hugely successful event for Red Beach with all crews medalling. Our four Masters crews doubled their efforts by competing in the Open division as well as Masters. The standout crews were the Flying Reddaz with four gold medals, finishing first in both Masters and Open women’s short and long course events, and the Red Hot Chillis with two gold medals from the U19 women’s long and short course events.

The Red Nicks and the Red Engines battled it out, sharing second and third in both Masters events. The Red Engines added more horse power to the team in the Open men’s division with Justin Vasiljevic and Dylan McDermott joining the crew to secure a second and third for the short and long course. The Lemons rounded out a great carnival for the canoes with a third in the U19 women’s long course.

This year’s National Championships were held at Mount Maunganui and the waves turned up to put on a real show. In big challenging conditions, seven Red Beach crews gave it their all against the country’s best. Even after the Flying Reddaz crew were

picked up and flipped over early, they came back on day two to make it to the final of the Open women’s long course, finishing fifth in New Zealand. The Red Hot Chilli’s domination was set to continue, winning every race throughout the heats and semifinals but unfortunately the surf gods failed them in the final of the U19 Women’s short course and they fought a hard battle to finish third. Nothing was going to stop them in the long course event, wining every race and they took out Gold in the final to be the first-ever Red Beach U19 Women’s canoe crew to be National champions.

Looking ahead to the 2019/2020 season and with the likelihood of more crews, the canoe division has started to fund raise for new canoes to replace some of our aging flotilla. We are extremely lucky to have the support of Daltons Landscape Supplies in Silverdale, Subway Whangaparoa and Subway Northcross. We are extremely grateful for their amazing donations along with all the other companies and people who have very generously donated to help make this happen.

40 Years of Heron SponsorshipReopening of ClubroomsRed Beach Surf Club paid tribute to club patron Bryan Heron and his wife Pat on Sunday 14 April when

a large gathering of club members – past and present – assembled in the clubrooms to honour the couple. The theme for the afternoon was ‘Honouring 40 Years of Heron Sponsorship’ which began in 1978 with the presentation of two rescue training skis to the club’s Nipper division.

Over four decades, Red Beach Surf Club has seen the gifting of no fewer than five surf boats as well as the sponsorship of surf canoes, competition equipment, club apparel, the building redevelopment programme and the club’s Junior division.

The reopening of the clubrooms by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff on Saturday 17 November was the culmination of 10 years of building redevelopment and renovations.

It was a significant occasion with other Council dignitaries also present, along with many of our Life Members and club sponsors.

IRB Report: Raptors CrewFor the first time since 2015,

Red Beach participated in IRB racing. This past season, Jonah Cleminson and Harry Mellor took up the challenge of learning a new sport from scratch and competed in the U19 division as the Red Beach Raptors. Their first outing was at Ruakaka on Saturday 12 January at the Northern Region IRB Championships.

It’s clear that both were well liked by everyone in the arena and because of this they received massive support from other clubs. They were joined by three ‘patients’ required for racing … Coby Moratti, Matt Hughes and Xavier Bradshaw who threw themselves into the sport with equal vigour.

There are often around 24 crews in the U19 arena and each heat/semi takes 3 crews through to the next round with 6 boats in the final.

At the BP North Island Championships at Waihi the highlights were winning their Single Rescue heat and placing 4th in the semi-finals of the Single Rescue and Mass Rescue events. They missed out on the finals by one spot.

In April, the crew and their families travelled to Dunedin for the BP Surf Rescue New Zealand Championships where the water temperature was a chilly 13 degrees and the beach on arrival was a frosty zero degrees.

At scrutineering the mechanics were amazed that our crew had the oldest, least competitive boat and that our engine was “falling apart”. Every other crew had a specialised ‘V strip’ fitted under their boat which acts as a sort of shallow keel, helping direct and rapidly turn the boat, providing a huge advantage.

Against all odds the Raptors made 3 semi-finals and placed a credible 5th in the final of the Single Rescue (coming home in second place, the lack of a V strip under the boat cost them dearly).

The IRB racing community has been incredibly supportive of Red Beach who, at normal carnivals, are the biggest team on the beach but in IRBs they are the little guys, even sharing tent space with other clubs.

It looks like Harry & Jonah might have started something here with a groundswell of new interest in IRB racing at Red Beach. The way they have represented our club is a credit to them and ensures we will be welcome in IRB racing next season. I was proud to have managed the Red Beach Raptors.

of laughs and good fun and the mateships that will last a lifetime.

Finally, a big thanks to our sponsors Argosy Property and The Flying Herons who generously support all our boat crews.

Open Women - MuzziesThe Muzzies had another

tough year and whilst the girls were always fit and strong, trying to get on the water consistently always proved difficult. By mid-season the results were promising and the goal of Nationals was going to be the steer. Throughout the weeks leading up to Nationals and with our super-sub Nicole, the girls found their groove and come Nationals were quietly confident of pulling something out of the bag.

The long course event was unfortunate with some bad luck in tough conditions; qualifying for the final didn’t eventuate. However, this left the short course final as the

main objective. Coming into the beach after a tough row out to the cans there were four boats all going for Gold. The run up the beach was where the podium would be set and the Muzzies worked tirelessly to get bowwoman Emma Wilson with a nose in front. A Bronze medal for the trials and tribulations of the season was a great way to finish it off.

Mus O’Halloran, Sweep

Under 23 Women - RabbitsThe 2018/2019 surf

season had a lot of focus and commitment brought to it by the Red Beach Rabbits crew.

Early in the season the girls found themselves on the hunt for a fourth rower to complete their crew and their prayers were answered by Red Beaches sweatheart Zoe Turner who decided to come into the light and take up surf boat rowing.

The team was complete with Olivia Soesbergen, Kathleen Oneroa, Danielle Ford and now Zoe Turner.

The girls bonded instantly and it showed in their rowing straight away, holding their own and showing their team work in every weather condition and any surf size.

The Rabbits were strong contenders at every competition contested and came millimetres from a Gold medal at Nationals. The crew took out the Silver medal in the final of the U23 Women’s short course event.

Finally, the girls pulled all their training and fundraising efforts together and took it to the Aussies in the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast. We fought hard at the biggest surf event in the world and came away happy with our performance.

I look forward to another season with these crazy girls and seeing many more new faces in surf boat rowing, I hope.

Thank you for your support over the last year and we look forward to working with you again next season.

A big thank you to everyone else who supported the crews during the year by doing everything that mattered. This covered all sorts of things ranging from the sweeps organising the crews and training, the stand-in sweeps who, during the season, stepped up to assist with training when the normal sweep couldn’t make it, maintenance and repairs on boats and trailers, towing boats to carnivals, making sure we had all the information for entries, family and friends supporting the crews and everything else that was needed to be able to complete.

Open Men – BoomersThe Boomers 2018-2019

season saw a change in crew personnel with 2nd bow seat vacated by Hayden Smith and replaced with Ricky Daniel-Nield. Jed Wright, Chris (Auntie) Carew, Shamus O’Halloran and Bugsy O’Halloran (sweep) completed the crew.

The Boomers aimed high in their goal stakes for this season with two main goals being to win NZ Open Men’s crew representative selection for a second consecutive year and to win a Gold at the Nationals at Mt Maunganui.

This season the NZ representative selection trials were held at the Whangamata Classic in December. Despite winning the Open Men’s event

on the day, and winning a race-off after the event racing had finished, the Boomers failed to gain selection.

Whilst very disappointed with not gaining selection, the Boomers got to experience the enormous support of our clubbies at the time of the race-off. A sea of black shirted Red Beach members invaded the boat arena prior to the race and the screaming on the beach as the boys fought to hit the beach first was something all five of us in the surf boat will keep as a special memory. To each of you on the beach that day, a huge thank you, it was awesome.

The rest of the season was really a build up to Nationals for this crew, having started training so early for the trials. One goal unachieved, and the second goal, a Gold at nationals, was the focus to finish the year.

In an extremely close short course final battle, the Boomers missed the Gold medal following a video review by the officials and had to settle for the Silver medal.

Whilst high goals were set and both were not achieved, this crew worked hard and probably deserved more success than what the record books show.

Regardless, it was a season that had its fair share

President’s ReportAt the time of writing this

report I can advise that we have completed the final stage of our club renovations to a near 95% finished building. This is Red Beach Surf Club’s second biggest asset, with our members being our most important and largest asset. The two go hand in hand. Nice clubrooms lift the spirits of our members and give us pride in our club. It also helps increase our revenue which enables us to operate.

It has been a very long journey to get to this stage, and as with all voluntary organisations it’s the blood sweat and tears of members who achieve this result, mostly through voluntary time.

The re-development of the clubrooms was celebrated in November 2018, with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff in attendance to officially reopen the club. It was a great occasion with other Council dignitaries present, along with many of our Life Members and sponsors, plus our amazing club members to celebrate the occasion.

Special thanks to the Auckland Council and Foundation North Trust as the main contributors for the last round of funding.

Two people I wish to personally thank are Paul Boocock and Debra Cairns, as part of the Building Committee, who had lots to cover off during this process, with total overload and support to myself in this regard.

The remaining items to be completed are the deck extension and the lift, both of which have progressed through

Council with Resource and Building consents granted. We are still waiting for final approval from Council regarding the leasing portion of the Reserve land which the club sits on, as to the amendment for the lift. But, as most of you know, this is not stopping us from enjoying our new facility.

Whether its patrolling, competing in carnivals, board, ski, swimming, boat and canoe training, Friday night socialising or brave IRB training through the winter - under Pete Kramer’s guidance - there’s always a buzz about the place and no shortage of volunteers ready to get involved and make whatever it is successful.

Over the course of the year we’ve had fund raising events, with special mention to Jim Kayes for organising the Rugby fundraiser, and the fishing contest organised by Wade & Michelle Downey. Thanks also to You Travel Orewa who organised the Hawaii raffle and ran it in conjunction with our neighbours at Orewa Surf Club. In total these events raised in excess of $50,000. A big thanks to everyone who organised, found sponsors, sold/bought tickets and generally contributed.

It’s always a pleasure to congratulate the recipient of the Presidents Cup and this year it was Robyn Presland. Robyn has not only competed in Masters but helped with many fundraisers and working bees, plus was the biggest ticket seller for the Hawaii raffle. Congratulations Robyn, totally deserved and thank you.

Many thanks to Debra Cairns for her very capable administration and management

of the club’s affairs. There are so many facets of the club to oversee and Debra is constantly juggling different roles. Thanks also to Ange Moore our sponsorship manager who keeps our sponsors informed and helps organise sponsor and fundraising events; great job this year Ange! Thanks also to our chef Greg Adams and his team who continue to supply great meals for the club, delicious!

A huge thank you to club coach Jack Gavin. Jack has built on last year’s success with further success this year. The on-going club spirit and culture of the club is improving each year under his guidance.

Congratulations Jack on keeping the Reddaz movement rolling through another great season!

Special thanks to the Committee members of each division for all your hard work; this would come under the responsibility of the following club members. I would also like to thank our sponsors, many of whom have supported Red Beach for a long period of time:

PLATINUM SPONSORS: The Flying Herons, Boocock Family Trust

Also, an enormous thank you to our GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE sponsors who are listed on page 2 of this Annual Report.

Thanks also to our Business House Sponsors, 25 in total, who signed up to support Red Beach.

We also acknowledge the support we have received from Foundation North, BH Heron Lifeguard Development Trust, The Lion Foundation, NZ Racing Board, Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, Pelorous Trust, NZ Lottery Grants Board, Fonterra Grass Roots Fund, Constellation Communities Trust, Auckland Council & TSB Bank.

Thanks to all our active and associate members, friends, volunteers and other helpers along with the wider community

who continue to make the Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club the special place it is. We look forward to doing it all again next season.

Finally, a huge thank you to Ross Malyon who collates the Annual Report each year. It’s a huge task and Ross’s dedication to the club in many areas is outstanding. Thank you Ross.

Once again we concluded a season having achieved our mission of keeping the community safe on our beaches, Red Beach and Pakiri. The club exists for that purpose and all our activities ultimately lead to providing trained, equipped and enabled lifeguards between the flags.

We have many things to be proud of as a club including

who we are as the people who make up our membership.

We continue to grow as a club and introduce new candidates to the joys and challenges of lifeguarding. In the 2018/19 season we qualified 38 new lifeguards and 3 patrol support guards. As we qualify new lifeguards it is a constant reminder that this is the beginning of the lifeguarding journey and that there are so many pathways and opportunities in which to develop and grow. This year we have had to be more active in identifying and promoting these opportunities to our membership. We’ve had

Club Captain’s ReportOur great club continued

to thrive this season with many developments and successes across the wider spectrum. The completion of the building was a major milestone and now provides a more fit-for-purpose and modern facility for our members to enjoy. There have been some significant lifeguarding and sporting achievements by our members who continue to promote the Red Beach name with pride and purpose.

The general “feel good factor” at the club this season has gone to another level and is at an all-time high. I feel our thriving club culture is the envy of other clubs who continually see a proud and united team on display at sporting events and the like.

Our season started once again with a great camp up north at Ahipara, led by our coach Jack Gavin. The new Rookies and their families had the opportunity to go into camp with the older members. An amazing few days away gave everyone an opportunity to get to know each other and the new U16s, mums, dads and a few siblings got to spend time with the amazing Senior crew that forms the heart of our club. I received a lot of amazing feedback from parents about how special the experience was for them. A great start to the season.

We then had a small team of athletes travel to the Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide where they competed with pride. Red Beach ended up with two athletes making the finals in the male and female single ski events, finishing 6th and 5th respectively. We then

had four athletes selected in the NR Trans-Tasman team which travelled to the Central Coast and competed in a three-test series against the Aussies, finishing second overall gaining some great experience.

As the season forged ahead the Red Beach team, led by their passionate coach Jack, stamped a dominant mark on the local sporting carnivals. It became evident that Red Beach had developed some real depth with multiple teams being entered in Taplins, board relays, ski relays and the like across all age groups. Our active membership continues to grow and by nature of great retention our U16 & U19 age groups have growing numbers who will start to feed into the Open divisions next season.

We backed up last year’s result by winning the NRCs again, this time at Omaha, taking out the overall points trophy by a healthy margin. With multiple teams in every event, especially in the U16 & U19 age groups, our neighbouring clubs were no match for our athletes who finished with a healthy points victory. A standout moment in the final event of the day was the Open Men’s Taplin. With a team comprising of four U19s and two Open men, they had nothing to lose and took out the mighty Mairangi Bay and Piha men’s teams for a great finish to the carnival. This bodes well for next season when a good number of U19s move into the Open age group.

Prior to Christmas we saw a great Whangamata Classic carnival followed by a club training camp in Gisborne with 50-plus members. The

week-long camp was cracker and teaming up with our Midway friends, led by Matt Sutton, exposed the athletes to some heavy and competitive sessions.

One of my favourite moments of the season was when the entire club went down to the boat arena at Whangamata to support the Boomers crew in the final race of the NZ Surf Boat trials. The boys rowed with determination, pulling off a 5-2 winning victory while supported by a sea of 60 or more Red Beach members cheering, whistling and shouting with excitement as the boys crossed the finish line.

Moving on to the Nationals, the team travelled to the Mount and competed well. Some standout performances saw Gold medals in the U16 Mens ski final, the U19 Women’s long course canoe final and the U19 Men’s ironman final in a real seat-of-your-pants finish. It was great to see Nationals medals hanging around the necks of so many or our members. Bring it on next year!

The work continues through the off-season with athletes training right through the winter. I’d like to thank those who have helped coach through the last few months with Jack away, in particular Chris Moors who has kept the Senior squad sessions cranking along. The circle of life continues.

Finally, I’d like to thank the Senior committee for their support, the beach managers for a great job at carnivals, the mid-week Junior coaches and our awesome head coach Jack Gavin for his efforts and leadership this season.

I wish to thank the members of the Lifesaving Operational Team for the massive hours they put in, the passion that they show in improving our professionalism and skills. I encourage any members wishing to become involved to simply ask. Every little bit helps.

This past season we extended our patrolling period to the end of March at both Red Beach and Pakiri. We will continue to look at ways to realise our vision of a tower and accommodation at Pakiri in order to encourage all our lifeguards to patrol there.

Thank you to our lifeguards, our instructors and examiners and the families who support us and the community by loaning you to us to enable us to patrol our beaches.

We’ve had

Surf Boat ReportRed Beach had three surf

boat crews in competition during the 2018-19 season … the Boomers in the Open Men’s division with sweep Bugsy O’Halloran; the Muzzies in the Open Women’s division with sweep Mus O’Halloran and the Rabbits in the U23 Women’s division with Jed Wright, all representing the club.

The boat crews would not be able to compete without sponsorship and we acknowledge the support of the club’s sponsors and especially our major boat sponsors, namely The Flying Herons and Argosy Property.
